UWSP ends regular season home schedule with Stout, Oshkosh
By John Kemmeter
With less than two weeks left in the regular season, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team will look to take a step toward capturing the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Title when it hosts UW-Stout and UW-Oshkosh in back-to-back home games.
The 18th-ranked Pointers (15-6, 9-1) knocked off then-12th-ranked UW-Whitewater (16-5, 6-4) at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse Wednesday, Jan. 31, and used a shot with 2.5 seconds left from junior guard/forward Mark Nelson to win 66-64 over then-24th-ranked UW-River Falls (14-6, 5-5) at home Saturday, Feb. 3.
WIAC-leading UWSP was set to square off with second-place and ninth-ranked UW-Platteville (18-3, 8-2) on the road Wednesday, Feb. 7, and then will be at home to take on Stout (7-14, 1-9) for Military Appreciation and Youth/Honor America Day at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, before it hosts 21st-ranked Oshkosh (16-5, 6-4) in the regular-season home finale at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14.
“We talk about the WIAC regular season being a marathon, not a sprint,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling. “But now as we turn the calendar from January to February, we definitely can see the finish line and we want to make a strong kick to the end.
“We’re in a good place, we control our destiny and we haven’t been in this position now since 2015, so I’m very pleased that these guys are in this position, and they deserve it, they’ve worked so hard and they’ve overcome so much,” he said. “And now we all want to finish the job.”
