Pioneer women of Portage County, Part 2: Dora Boss’ Photography Career
By Wendell Nelson
Though Dora Boss was Portage County’s first woman photographer, her studio was not Amherst’s first. The village’s Stevens Point Journal correspondent reported in the Nov. 6, 1886, issue that, “We have a new photographer. Call on him.” Unfortunately, the correspondent could not decide how to spell the photographer’s surname.
The following issue, Nov. 13, gave more details. “G.[sic] F. Rinehart is the name of our new photographer. He comes well recommended as a workman and an artist.”
On Feb. 12, 1887, the Amherst reporter wrote, “C.F. Reinhart, our photographer, is sending out some fine work from his gallery here.”
But on April 9, the correspondent noted that, “Our photographer talks of moving to Rhinelander.”
