Amherst faces Grantsburg for State Championship Game berth
By John Kemmeter
The top-ranked and back-to-back defending WIAA Division 5 State Champion Amherst High School football team (11-1) will look to advance to the State Championship Game for the fifth time in six years when it faces Division 6 second-ranked Grantsburg (12-0) in a WIAA Division 5 State Semifinal at Stanley-Boyd at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10.
The winner will move on to play either sixth-ranked Lake Country Lutheran (12-0) or ninth ranked Cedar-Grove Belgium (11-1) in the Division 5 State Championship Game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16.
“To be in the Final Four six years in a row, it’s great,” said Amherst High School football head coach Mark Lusic. “I’ve been on both ends of them, I’ve won them and I’ve lost them, and our goal of course is to be 1-0 and to move on to the next round.
“And I told those guys, ‘now you can say it, you’re close enough and you know what the next step is if you win this one,’” he said. “So, our focus is on this one, there’s no doubt about it.”
