Sisters have chance to partner with county again

As Portage County staff prepares a Request for Proposal (RFP) for partnership to gain assistance in operating the Health Care Center, groups with religious affiliations will not be excluded.
The county Health Care Center Committee members agreed Wednesday, Aug. 2, that if a request meets criteria and poses the best alternative for the county, it should be considered regardless of whether any religious affiliation is attached.
Committee members also agreed to simultaneously establish a subcommittee to research referendum options and details.
A variety of RFPs from across the country were reviewed, as committee members tried to pinpoint what they wanted.
“We want a good product, but I want to cut to the chase,” Portage County Executive Patty Dreier said. “We had all the unfortunate discussion surrounding a religious organization (a year ago), so if they submit, and they’re the best option, are you going to shut them down because of the religious part?”
At least one committee member – newcomer Vinnie Miresse – looked shocked.
