SPASH
Football: The Panthers jumped out to an early 14-0 lead at Goerke Park last Friday and went on to a 34-12
opening game win over Wausau East.
SPASH capitalized on an early East fumble when Ross Adamczak found paydirt on a 6-yard bootleg. The Panthers kept
going on their next possession, which was topped off by Kevin Fitzgerald's 20-yard touchdown run.
Junior running back Cory Flisakowski gave SPASH a pair of scores with a 23-yard scamper in the second quarter and
a 64-yard run in the third. Fitzgerald scored the final touchdown for the Panthers on a 2-yard run in the fourth
quarter.
Flisakowski gained 230 yards on 19 carries, an average of more than 12 yards per carry. Fitzgerald finished with
43 yards on seven carries.
Girls swimming: The Panthers had their way with Appleton West/Kimberly Tuesday, and ran away with 128-42
dual meet win.
SPASH grabbed nine first place finishes, which helped the Panthers even their dual meet record to 1-1.
Kara Martin was a double individual winner for SPASH, taking top honors in the 100-meter butterfly (1:04.53) and
the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.97). April Burant returned from injury to win the 100-meter freestyle (56.36), Liz
Potter captured the 50-meter freestyle, Paddy Brown finished in the top spot in the 500-meter freestyle (5:46.28)
and Heather Wallner won the 200-meter freestyle (2:11.94).
The Panthers also finished first in a trio of relays. The 200-meter medley relay of Martin, Jacci Menzel, Rachel
Herder and Burant (1:58.23); the 400-freestyle relay of Potter, Burant, Hayley Lazarski and Marie Jacobs (4:11.10)
and the 200-meter relay of Potter, Menzel, Martin and Burant (1:45.80) all won their respective events.
Girls tennis: SPASH opened its season with the broom Tuesday, sweeping all seven matches against Wausau
West.
Ann Howley started things off with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Katie Line at No. 1 singles. Meagan Palmer dropped Patti
Korth at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 3 Lauren Hom beat Tara Krause, 6-0, 6-1. Stephani Van Kleef completed
the singles sweep with a win 6-1, 6-0 win over Jamie Fratwell at No. 4.
Claire Boylan and Rheanna Ruedebusch took care of Megan Hertz and Leticia Del Arco 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. SPASH's
Bailey Menzel and Amber Yudchitz came back to take No. 2 doubles from Lindsay Gorbocz and Julia Meyer, 4-6, 6-1,
6-4. Jessie Palmer and Casie Curbaugh completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 win over BreAnne Flanagan and Melissa
Wanserski.
Pacelli
Football: Pacelli lost its season opener to Owen-Withee on the road 28-14 last Friday, a game where the
Cardinals had opportunities erased by penalties and turnovers.
Pacelli came out of the halftime locker room and quickly grabbed a 14-7 lead after Adam Brazzale's 15-yard touchdown
run. However, the Blackhawks scored three unanswered touchdowns to get the win, including Brad Sholes' 40-yard
interception return with 56 seconds remaining.
Owen-Withee got on the scoreboard first with an interception return for a touchdown, but Pacelli bounced back in
the second quarter. Quarterback Steve Wiczek found Pat Schmitt for a 20-yard score, but the Cardinals still trailed
after the extra point try failed.
Neil Jurgella paced Pacelli on the ground, gaining 93 yards on just 10 carries. Overall, the Cardinals picked up
160 yards rushing on 28 carries.
Girls tennis: The Cardinals fell to the Wausau Newman Fighting Cardinals Tuesday in a Central Wisconsin
Catholic Conference dual, 5-2. Pacelli, which is now 2-2 on the year, split the four singles matches but dropped
three straight doubles matches.
Joy Jacoby and Aerin Spitz defeated their opponents in singles competition. Jacoby had an easy time with Sarah
Johansen at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. Spitz was victorious 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 against Christine Zeger.
Girls volleyball: Pacelli split with Auburndale and Wausau West in a non-conference triangular at the Student
Activities Center Tuesday.
The Cardinals came back against Auburndale to post a 10-15, 15-6, 15-10 victory but then Wausau West handed Pacelli
a 15-10, 15-10 loss.
Returning all-conference team member Laura McCorkell finished the day with 12 kills and seven blocks and Cindy
Lila compiled 15 service points. Katie Tomsyck had six blocks and Kim Schulist dished out six assists.
Almond-Bancroft
Girls volleyball: The Eagles swept three games Tuesday night at Green Lake. A-B took game one 15-1, game
two 15-7 and game three 15-10.
"Our serving overpowered Green Lake in game one, led by Krista Cummings with six straight points and Stephanie
Jenz with nine straight points," A-B coach George Young said.
"Game two, Green Lake played better, but our serves took over again toward the end of the game. Game three
Almond-Bancroft fell behind early, but again our serves took over at the end."
Tabitha Sawyer led the Eagles with 13 service points, one ace and five assists. Krista Cummings had nine service
points, five aces and five kills and Jenz had 12 service points, four aces and four kills.
Amherst
Football: Amherst dropped its season opener, at home, to Wild Rose last Friday, 28-22. The Falcons ran into Wild
Rose quarterback John Klicka, who carried the Wildcats with 163 yards on 20 carries.
Amherst tried to rally from a 28-8 second quarter deficit but fell a touchdown short. The Falcons defense cracked
down on Wild Rose's wishbone in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 14-0. Jason Heinz was in on both scores,
as he caught a touchdown pass from Matt Mehne and then ran back a fumble recovery 81 yards to paydirt.
Paul Konkol, who scored Amherst's first touchdown, rushed for 128 yards on 22 carries.
Boys cross country: The Falcons finished fourth at the Iola-Scandinavia T-Bird Invite, scoring 94 points.
Oconto Falls won the meet with 75, while Weyauwega-Fremont was second with 85 and Bonduel took third with 85.
"Today we ran pretty well for having about one-third of the team. We use weekday meets for workouts, so it
was about an 80 percent effort," Amherst coach Rob Sparhawk said.
Dan Ehr led the Falcons with a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meter race (18:43). Jordan Seibo (15th in 19:49),
Jonathan Bronk (17th in 19:58), Jeremy Sherf (24th in 20:31) and Dan Werner (34th in 21:56) scored points for Amherst.
Scott Hintz (37th in 22:20) and Tim Olson (46th in 22:40) closed out the top seven.
"This is kind of like our preseason," Sparhawk said of his team's first meet. "We held some of our
'Brett Favres' out to look at the younger guys."
Girls cross country: The Amherst girls took fourth at the T-Bird Invite with 91 points. Jane Ovanin broke
the top three, taking third in the 4,000 meter race (16:28). Samantha Diver (8th in 18:14), Jenny Woyak (25th in
20:14), Leah Hunter (27th in 20:24) and Ashley Bavery (28th in 20:32) completed Amherst's top five. Karen Ehr (29th
in 20:37) and Amber Worden (31st in 21:09) grabbed spots in the Falcons' top seven runners.
"The whole girls team ran really well," Sparhawk said. "It's the first time in a long time we had
a full varsity and (junior varsity) team."
Rosholt
Football: Rosholt will have to wait until Friday for its first game after Crandon forfeited its game with
the Hornets. Crandon administrators told Rosholt they didn't have enough players at school to field a team. |
