SPASH
Football: The Panthers rallied from a 13-0 deficit behind the running of Cory Flisakowski to escape Antigo with a 23-19 win Friday night. SPASH, which remains atop the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a 4-0 record, will butt heads with undefeated Marshfield Friday at Goerke Field.

Flisakowski was again the story of the game, scoring three touchdowns in the second half to save the Panthers from an upset. His TD runs of 22, 29 and 30 helped him amass 277 yards on 31 carries. The game was tied until time expired in the third quarter, when Ryan Hoffman booted a 39-yard field goal to give SPASH a 16-13 lead.

Boys cross country: SPASH edged fellow Valley team Marshfield for third place, 82-84, at the Smiley Invitational Saturday. Homestead won the meet with 47 and La Crosse Central was second with 47.

Josh Garbe gave the Panthers a fifth place finish (16:59), while Chris Solinsky (12th in 17:23), Chris Jahntz (15th in 17:29), A.J. Moen (35th in 17:49) and Quinn Baumberger (43rd in 18:02) completed the top five.

Alexis Sustman paced the Panthers with a 21st place finish in 16:38. Kim Klosno (23rd in 16:43), Laine Willkom (26th in 16:46), Christy Griffen (30th in 16:50) and Kjersten Johnson (35th in 17:01) rounded out the top five. Katie Ziehr (42nd in 17:19) and Ashley Francsis (55th in 17:37) also ran for SPASH.

Soccer: Cheng Yang's goal in the game's second overtime propelled the Panthers to another WVC victory, this time over Wisconsin Rapids 1-0. Each team had 17 shots on goal, but SPASH's Jesse Miech and the Red Raiders' Craig Archibald held the two teams scoreless until Yang ended the contest.

Swimming: The Panthers doubled up on Wisconsin Rapids last Thursday, 114-56. SPASH is now 3-0 in the Valley and 6-2 overall.

"Our gals put in solid performances in the middle of this two week heavy training period," SPASH swimming coach George Klingbail said. "Practice fatigue showed as the girls entered their second, third and fourth events tonight."

Swimming to first place finishes in the individual events were April Burant (100-meter backstroke in 1:11.28, 100-meter butterfly in 1:11.72), Callie Wild (50-meter freestyle in 30.89), Heather Wallner (500-meter freestyle in 6:26.17), Liz Potter (200-meter freestyle in 2:24.70) and Kara Martin (200-meter medley in 2:37.13).

In the relays, the Panthers took first in both the 200-meter medley relay (Martin, Wild, Burant and Jacci Menzel in 2:10.99) and the 400-meter freestyle (Potter, Martin, Menzel and Marie Jacobs in 4:28.10).

Tennis: The Panthers upheld their unbeaten WVC record, winning three singles matches and one doubles contest to edge Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday, 4-3.

SPASH's Ann Howley (No. 1), Lauren Hom (No. 2) and Meagan Palmer (No. 3) all came away with victories. And in doubles play, the No. 2 team of Bailey Menzel and Amber Yudchitz clinched the dual for the Panthers.

SPASH mixed up their lineup Saturday at the Beaver Dam Invitational and grabbed runner-up honors to Manitowoc, 30-21.

Howley (No. 1) won an individual championship for the fourth consecutive year and the No. 3 doubles team of Menzel and Yudchitz took top honors, too. The team of Hom and Palmer (No. 1 doubles) finished second while Stefani VanKleef (No.2) and the No. 2 doubles team of Claire Boylan and Colleen Dougherty won consolation championships.

The Panthers also won last Thursday, as they swept Merrill 7-0. SPASH dominated the match, winning all but two games. Howley (No. 1), Palmer (No. 2) and Hom (No. 3) all won 6-0, 6-0 and VanKleef (No. 4) came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. SPASH was swept by conference leader Marshfield (15-13, 15-5) and Wausau East (15-7, 15-2). The Panthers lost two of three matches to Merrill (14-16, 16-14, 15-7) and D.C. Everest (15-2, 10-15, 16-14).

Pacelli
Football: Pacelli rallied for 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals fell short at Eau Claire Regis in their Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference opener Saturday, 20-14. Trailing 20-0 after three quarters, Pacelli (1-3 overall) and quarterback Steve Wiczek marched down the field twice before falling short in a last minute drive. Wiczek, who was 8-of-10 passing in the final quarter, had two drives capped off by Justin Anderson touchdown runs of 10 and 1 yards.

While the Ramblers' defense bent, it did not break. Wiczek was leading another drive for the potential game-winning score when he was sacked twice to end the rally.

Boys cross country: The Cardinals were sixth with 156 points at the Baraboo T-Bird Challenge Tuesday. Franz Klein led the way, finishing fourth in 17:43. Nick Gross (26th in 19:11), Nate Kryshak (40th in 20:42), Nathan Herbert (43rd in 21:23) and Jason Lepak (44th in 21:30) comprised Pacelli's top five while Evan Kruzitski (46th in 23:58) and Stephen Klein (47th in 27:30) also ran.

Klein finished fifth in 17:44 and the Cardinals were seventh in Division 3 with 172 points Saturday at the Smiley Invitational.

Following Klein in Pacelli's top five were Nick Gross (25th in 19:12), Nate Kryshak (42nd in 20:12), Chris Fletcher (45th in 20:31) and Jason Lepak (55th in 21:42). Nathan Herbert (56th in 22:35) and Evan Kruzitski (58th in 23:18) also ran for the Cardinals.

Soccer: A hat trick by Nate Swenson gave the Cardinals a 3-1 win over Chippewa Falls McDonell Tuesday. After a scoreless first half, Swenson and Lyndsey Gagas teamed for two goals, while Andy Kedrowski got an assist on the third.

Injuries may have kept the Pacelli coed soccer team from a title at the La Crosse Logan Invitational. The Cardinals defeated Chippewa Falls 3-0 and host Logan 2-1 to advance to the championship, behind two goals from Steve Baumhofer and three from Nate Swenson. But after Pacelli suffered some injuries in the earlier two games, Reedsburg handed the Cardinals a 2-0 loss in the championship game.

Last Thursday, Pacelli disposed of Menominee Indian 5-0, behind a pair of goals from Baumhofer and Swenson. Josh Schloesser also found the back of the net for the Cardinals.

Tennis: Pacelli won two of three doubles matches, but it wasn't enough Tuesday as the Cardinals were edged by Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 4-3. Abby Mallek and Melissa Schuler won at No. 1 doubles and Aerin Spitz and Jennifer Whittington team to top their opponent at No. 2. Pacelli lost three of four singles matches, with Joy Jacoby getting a win at No. 2 singles.

The Cardinals fell to 1-5 in the CWCC and 2-5 overall with a 6-1 loss to Wausau Newman last Thursday. Pacelli got its win from the No. 2 doubles team of Melissa Schuler and Jennifer Whittington, who outlasted Haley Kuntz and Nathasha Holl in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Volleyball: The Cardinals fell to 0-2 in the CWCC after dropping a match on the road Tuesday against Wisconsin Rapids Assumption. The Royals won the first game, 15-8, and the second, 15-12, before Pacelli came back and took game three, 15-5.

Laura McCorkell contributed four blocks and four kills for the Cardinals. Lyndsey Johnson had seven assists while Toni Johnson added four.

Almond-Bancroft
Football: A-B got revenge and its first win of the season in a 17-6 victory over Plainfield Tri-County Friday. The Eagles, who were routed by the Penguins 40-0 last year, got 250 rushing yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns from Nick Sanchez. A-B's defensive gave Tri-County quarterback Ben Creamer fits all night, as he completed just one of 18 passes for seven yards.

Sanchez put the Eagles on the board in the second quarter with a 73-yard TD scamper and the Penguins came back with a score of their own to close within 7-6. A 27-yard Trevor Dernbach field goal gave A-B a 10-6 lead heading into the locker room and then a 21-yard Sanchez run put the game away in the third quarter.

Volleyball: Losses to Gresham and Iola-Scandinavia Tuesday at a home triangular dropped the Eagles to 1-6 in the CWC. A-B was swept by Gresham (4-2 in CWC) 15-7, 15-13, 15-11 and won one of three close games against the undefeated Thunderbirds (7-0 in CWC) 15-13, 15-10, 7-15.

"The team continues to play hard and puts together some good spurts," A-B coach Roger Young said. "We need more consistency."

The Eagles grabbed a third place finish in pool play at the Weyauwega Tournament Saturday. A-B swept Green Bay West's junior varsity team 15-0, 15-4 before it dropped matches to Iola-Scandinavia and New London. After falling 15-4 in the first game against I-S, the Eagles fell behind 13-6. But behind the serves of Stephanie Jenz, A-B battled back and got within one, 13-12, before the Thunderbirds put the game away.

Krista Cummings had 14 service points, four aces and nine saves to lead A-B. Jenz (eight kills), Tabitha Sawyer (10 assists, 11 saves) and Sarah Berry (11 saves) led their team in each catergory.

A-B dropped a CWC match Thursday to Tigerton at home, 15-6, 15-4, 15-7. Berry had seven saves, four kills and four service points to pace the Eagles.

"Not much went right for us tonight. Poor passing did us in in the beginning of every game and we could not come back," Young said.

Amherst
Football: Just a week after allowing 50 points to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, the Falcons's defense pitched a shutout Friday and Amherst ran away with a 36-0 win over Marion. Paul Konkol scored three touchdowns and ran for 123 yards on 19 attempts. Dustin Stuczynski grabbed a 39-yard touchdown pass from Matt Mehne and Derek Konkol had a 28-yard TD run for Amherst, which improved to 1-1 in the CWC large school division and 1-3 overall.

Boys cross country: Amherst was fourth at the Baraboo T-Bird Challenge Tuesday. The Falcons, who used the race as a workout, scored 94 points. Dan Ehr led Amherst with a sixth place finish (17:47), while Jeremy Sherf (2nd in 18:55), Dan Werner (25th in 19:07), Scott Nykl (27th in 19:14) and Jeremy Leck (29th in 19:19) also competed.

The Falcons were fifth in Division 3 at the Smiley Invitational Saturday after scoring 118 points. Rib Lake took the top honors with 66, followed by Spencer (71), Prentice (83) and Marshfield Columbus (91).

Ehr, who finished in 11th place in 18:16, paced Amherst. Jordan Selbo (17th in 18:42), Jonathan Bronk (22nd in 18:59), Werner (33rd in 19:39) and Leck (35th in 19:43) completed the top five and Tim Olsen (40th in 20:04) and Sherf (48th in 20:51) also ran for Amherst.

Girls cross country: The Falcons had two runners entered at the Baraboo T-Bird Challenge Tuesday and both finished in the top ten. Jane Ovanin took fourth place in 16:26 and Samantha Diver was 10th in 16:59.
Led by two top five finishes, Amherst grabbed third place in Division 3 at the Smiley Invitational Saturday. Juniors Ovanin (2nd in 16:03) and Diver (4th in 16:34) were the Falcons' frontrunners, while Jenny Woyak (19th in 19:05), Leah Hunter (23rd in 19:25) and Amber Worden (35th in 20:20) made up Amherst's top five. Karen Ehr (36th in 20:35) also ran.

Volleyball: Amherst took two of three games from Marion last Thursday, 15-6, 15-13, 11-15. Melissa Kayon had 12 service points, Meghan Simkins collected eight kills and Erin Jensen dished out seven assists.

"We have people showing improvement with each match," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said. Playing 23 games in the last six days can show you a lot about your team."

Rosholt
Football: The Hornets bounced back from a 38-0 loss last week to beat Bowler 24-8 Friday. Rosholt scored 12 points in the second quarter to take an 18-8 lead and added another score in the fourth.

Ryan Zdroik found Seneca Omernik for a 25-yard touchdown pass to give Rosholt a 6-0 lead. But after Bowler answered to take an 8-6 advantage, Randy Printz and Ryan Zdroik scored rushing touchdowns to put Rosholt ahead for good. John Betker added a rushing score in the fourth quarter while the defense shut down Bowler, holding the team to only 84 total yards.

Boys cross country: Rosholt finished eighth in Division 3 with 175 points at the Smiley Invitational Saturday. Pat Knutson gave the Hornets a top 15 finish (13rh in 18:29), while Joel Skornia (28th in 19:17), Rob Cherek (38th in 19:58), Bob Omernik (43rd in 20:18) and Bart Butler (53rd in 21:30) rounded out the top five.

"We actually would have beat four Division 2 schools even though we only beat one (Division 3) school," Rosholt coach Mike Trzebiatowski said. "All of them ran their best race of the year."

Girls cross country: The Hornets made it four for four this year after winning the Smiley Invitational Saturday, 39-54 over Edgar. Tami Scott won the race for the second year in a row and the team's victory was Rosholt's second straight Division 3 Smiley title.

"Winning their fourth invite in four tries this year is a great start. Our team was the best team of the Division 2 schools as well," Trzebiatowski said. "What makes us tough is we have two really tough runners up front and our pack of 3, 4, 5, 5, 7 is tightly bunched.

"As impressive as we might seem to be we still need to get Lisa Yenter and Amy Scott to 100 percent, which will help immensely.

The sophomore Scott paced the entire field, finishing the 4,000-meter course in 15:34. Senior Jen Zdroik gave the Hornets two top three finishes, grabbing a third place medal in 16:15. Freshman Lyndsey Peplinski (10th in 17:40), senior Pirjo Felmaa (12th in 17:56) and freshman Jacki Yenter (13th in 18:03) completed the top five. Also running were Lisa Yenter (14th in 18:12), Nicki Bembenek (15th in 18:19) and Angela Ryan (30th in 19:52).

Volleyball: Rosholt moved to 2-4 in the CWC Tuesday after splitting a triangular with Plainfield Tri-County and Tigerton. The Hornets cruised against the Penguins - 15-6, 15-2, 15-4 - before Tigerton won two of three to against Rosholt, 15-12, 6-15, 15-10.

The Hornets lost to Iola-Scandinavia last Thursday for the second time in two weeks. Rosholt dropped two of three games to the undefeated conference leader.
