SPASH
Football: SPASH held off a strong challenge from Merrill and put the game away in the fourth quarter for a 30-14 win. The Panthers remained unbeaten with lots of help from running back Cory Flisakowski, who ran for over 200 yards against the Bluejays. He also found the end zone twice - on SPASH's first and last drives of the game.

Kyle Bohm's 10-yard touchdown catch from Adamczak - which was deflected off of one SPASH and one Merrill player - and Ryan Hoffman's 36-yard field goal as time expired gave the Panthers a 16-7 halftime edge. But Merrill came back and got within 16-14 on Jake VanDerGeest's 6-yard run in the third quarter.

SPASH regained its cushion on another Bohm touchdown catch, this one on fourth-and-goal from the 17.

Boys cross country: The Panthers, led by individual winner Josh Garbe, finished second at the D.C. Everest Invitational in 16:45. Marshfield topped SPASH 46-60 for the top spot. Chris Solinski (ninth in 17:29), A.J. Moen (14th in 17:43), Chris Jahntz (15th in 17:44) and Curt Mitchell (21st in 17:59) scored points for the Panthers. Also running were Quinn Baumberger (22nd in 18:03), Nathan Hurst (25th in 18:15) and Owen Schuh (33rd in 18:36).

Girls cross country: SPASH fell 20 points short of rival D.C. Everest at the Evergreen's home invite, 51-71. Alexis Sustman was the first Panther to finish, taking fifth in 20:35. Kim Klosno (eighth in 20:45), Kjersten Johnson (17th in 21:17), Ashley Francis (20th in 21:24) and Laine Willkom (21st in 21:27) rounded out SPASH's top five. Christy Griffen (23rd in 21:40), Katie Ziehr (26th in 21:45) and Taylor Ebens (45th in 23:13) also ran.

Boys soccer: SPASH strung together three goals in five minutes of the second half and shutout conference rival D.C. Everest 3-0 Tuesday. Adam Bale found the back of the net twice and Gaute Egen ended the spurt with a goal of his own. The Panthers also edged Wausau West 2-1 Saturday behind goals from Bale and Dan Schmeeckle. Earlier, SPASH came away with a convincing 4-0 win at Merrill. Cheng Yang and Chris Becker each had a goal and Bale scored two as the Panthers outshot the Bluejays 27-2 last Thursday.

Girls swimming: The Panthers split a double dual Thursday against Merrill and Eau Claire Memorial. In its 136-36 rout of Merrill, SPASH had 10 first place finishes in the 11-event meet and was the runner-up in each race too.

Heather Wallner and Kara Martin both grabbed a pair of first place finishes for the Panthers. Wallner took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.92) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:51.24), while Martin won the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.37) and the 100-yard freestyle (56.57).

The Panther performaces didn't match us as well against Eau Claire Memorial, who edged SPASH 91-79. Only Martin (in the 200-yard individual medley) and the 200-yard medley relay of Martin, Jacci Menzel, April Burant and Liz Potter (1:54.84) topped Memorial's times in the double dual.

Girls tennis: The Panthers took a trio of singles matches and one doubles bout and remained unbeaten in the conference at 4-0 with a 4-3 win over Wausau East. Lauren Hom (No. 2), Meagan Palmer (No. 3) and Stefani Van Kleef (No. 4) all picked up victories while the No. 3 doubles team of Jessie Palmer and Casie Crubaugh grabbed a win too.

SPASH edged host school Green Bay Southwest Saturday at the Southwest Tournament, 29-28. A trio of firsts and three runner-up finishes gave the Panthers the big win. Hom (No. 2), Van Kleef (No. 4) and the No. 3 doubles team of Palmer and Crubaugh all took top honors. No. 1 singles player Ann Howley, Palmer (No. 3) and the team of Bailey Menzel and Amber Yudchitz (No. 2 doubles) all finished second.

Girls volleyball: SPASH swept four of seven opponents and had an 11-3 record last Saturday at the Appleton West Invitational. The Panthers won two from Pulaski, Oshkosh West, Fox Valley Lutheran and Wausaukee and then split with Appleton West, Menasha St. Mary's and Appleton East.

SPASH escaped Rhinelander with a trio of close wins last Thursday. The Panthers topped the Hodags 15-9, 15-10 and 15-11 to remain unbeaten in the conference.

Pacelli
Football: Five turnovers and numerous penalties contributed to Tomahawk's big 35-0 nonconference win over the Cardinals. Pacelli's offense struggled, gaining only 76 yards while the Hatchets picked up 285 total yards. Tomahawk held a 12-0 lead at halftime and then scored 16 points in the third quarter to put the game away.

Boys cross country: Pacelli grabbed 10th place overall with 270 points at the D.C. Everest Invite. Franz Klein cracked the top ten again for the Cardinals, finishing 10th in 17:32 Nick Gross (46th in 19:28), Chris Fletcher (60th in 20:02), Joe Miller (76th in 20:48) and Nate Kryshak (78th in 20:49) made up Pacelli's first five. Paul Marten (83rd in 21:19) Jason Lepak (94th in 22:16) and Nathan Herbert (95th in 22:18) also ran for the Cardinals.

Girls cross country: With Katie Hansel out with an injury, Pacelli only had two runners at the D.C. Everest Invite. Angela Peters (64th in 24:29) and Amber Bemowski (76th in 25:50) competed for the Cardinals.

Soccer: The Cardinals fell behind 5-0 early and Marshfield Columbus ran away with a 7-1 win. Steve Baumhofer contributed Pacelli's only goal of the game, which came in the second half. Pacelli disposed of Oshkosh Lourdes 5-0 Saturday to improve to 4-1-1 on the year. Baumhofer had a hat trick and Nate Swenson scored twice to lead Pacelli in the rout.

"We were pumped for this match and it showed. We dominated the entire match, allowing only nine shots on goal," Pacelli coach Manny Carriero said.

The Cardinals also topped Mosinee Thursday, 6-1. George McCorkell, and Erin Van Hammond each scored one goal while Steve Baumhofer and Nate Swenson found the back of the net twice for Pacelli.

Girls tennis: The No. 2 doubles team of Abby Mallek and Aerin Spitz topped its Eau Claire Regis opponent, but the Cardinals dropped a 5-2 dual against their conference foe. Mandy Clifford and Denise Lukaszewski picked up Pacelli's other win by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.

Pacelli finished eighth with three points last Saturday at the Appleton West Invitational. The Cardinals' lone placewinner was No. 5 singles player Sue Smith, who finished fourth. Fellow WISAA school Green Bay Notre Dame won the invite with 49 points.

Girls volleyball: Pacelli fell in a tight 15-13 game to Wausau Newman that sealed Pacelli's fate in its conference opener Tuesday. After dropping a 15-6 game to open the match, the Cardinals fell behind early to Newman before battling back to tie the score, 12-12, late in the match. Toni Johnson had eight assists and two aces while Katie Tomsyck had seven kills and four aces for Pacelli.

The Cardinals had an easy time with Oshkosh Christian last Thursday, coming away with 15-9, 15-0 and 15-1 victories. McCorkell and Cindy Lila both had 10 points for Pacelli.

Almond-Bancroft
Football: The Eagles dropped to 0-3 on the year at the hands of Wild Rose, 40-14. The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead and then scored 20 points in the third quarter to take a convincing 34-6 advantage.

Nick Sanchez got A-B on the board in the third with a 50-yard touchdown and Josh Warzynski had a 4-yard score in the fourth quarter. Sanchez finished with 116 yards on 20 carries.

Girls volleyball: A-B picked up its first conference win Tuesday with a sweep of Plainfield Tri-County. After a close 15-13 victory in the first game, the Eagles fought for 15-7 and 15-8 wins.

Stephanie Jenz led A-B with 10 service points, four aces and two kills while Tabitha Sawyer contributed 12 assists and Krista Cummings had six kills. A-B is now 1-3 in Central Wisconsin Conference play.

The Eagles dropped two of three games to Port Edwards Thursday. Although all three were close, Port Edwards took the first and third matches 15-12 while A-B won game two 19-17.

Sawyer had nine service points and 14 assists; Cummings nailed nine kills; and Lindsay Folan had 12 saves.

Amherst
Football: A big second quarter for Wittenberg-Birnamwood proved to be the difference in Amherst's CWC home opener. The Chargers racked up 23 points in the quarter and went on to rout the Falcons, 50-20.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood took a 34-6 lead into the locker room and then added 14 unanswered points in the third quarter. Amherst had a pair of scores in the fourth, a 28-yarder from Paul Konkol and a 13-yard scamper from Derek Konkol. Matt Maehne got the Falcons on the board with a 10-yard TD pass to Dusty Stuczynski in the second.

Girls volleyball: Amherst swept three games from Shiocton to remain unbeaten in the CWC. The Falcons, with wins of 15-8, 15-9 and 15-8, improved to 2-0. Meghan Simkins had eight kills, Ann Stanislawski picked up 10 service points and Becca Konkol had five assists.

"We played this match with some emotion," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said. "Overall we played much better than Monday night."

On Monday, the Falcons lost two out of three matches at the Waupaca Triangular. The host Comets dumped Amherst 15-4 and 15-11 in the first match and Hortonville followed with 15-8 and 15-2 wins. The Falcons ended on a winning note, outlasting Marion 16-14, 18-16.

Last Saturday, Amherst competed in the Wautoma Invitational, taking second with an 8-3 record. Wautoma, which handed the Falcons two of their losses, finished first at 9-2. The Falcons swept Baraboo, Adams-Friendship, Montello before they split with Rosholt and the host school. Last Thursday, Amherst cruised to a sweep of Menominee Indian, 15-8, 15-3 and 15-12.

Rosholt
Football: Rosholt fell behind early and Iola-Scandinavia literally ran away with a 38-0 victory last Friday. The Hornets, who had beaten Amherst a week earlier, ran into a quick Thunderbird team who are the defending champions of the CWC small school division.

I-S jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter and never looked back.

Boys cross country: The Hornets finished 13th overall at the D.C. Everest Invitational, scoring 339 points. Pat Knutson (39th in 19:06), Joel Skornia (52nd in 19:47), Rob Cherek (72nd in 20:36), Bob Omernik (79th in 21:03) and Bart Butler (97th in 22:28) made up Rosholt's varsity team.

"The boys team had some nice improvement and we beat a couple of teams but we do need to get excited about racing a little more aggressive," Rosholt coach Mike Trzebiatowski said.

Girls cross country: Rosholt made it three in a row Tuesday, taking top honors in the small school division at the D.C. Everest Invitational. The Hornets, who won the Wittenberg-Birnamwood and SPASH invite titles, finished fourth overall with 129 points.

Tami Scott finished in the runner-up spot for the second straight time, finishing the 4,000 meter course in 19:46. Jen Zdroik (7th in 20:27), Perio Eelmaa (38th in 22:53), Amy Scott (40th in 22:56) and Lisa Yenter (42nd in 23:01) completed the top five. Also running for the Hornets were Lyndsey Peplinski (43rd in 23:03), Jacki Yenter (48th in 23:20) and Nicki Bembenek (54th in 23:45).

"We are on a little roll and we are only going to keep getting better," Trzebiatowski said.

Girls volleyball: The Hornets finished 6-4 at the Wautoma Invite last Saturday, tying them for third with Baraboo. Last Thursday, Rosholt lost two of three games to Bowler. After taking the first game 15-9, the Hornets dropped two in a row, 15-7 and 15-2.
