Amherst VB wins own invite
Host Amherst High School topped three other local volleyball teams, as well as Wausau Newman and Tigerton to take
the Amherst Invitational.
The Falcons finished with an 8-2 record, good enough to beat Newman (7-3) for the title. Pacelli and Rosholt tied
for third with 5-5 marks, Tigerton was fifth at 4-6 and Almond-Bancroft was sixth at 1-9.
"For our first games of the year I thought we did a good job," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said.
Amherst opened the tourney with 15-0 and 15-4 wins over A-B and 15-1 and 17-15 victories over Rosholt. The Falcons
then split with Tigerton (15-9 and 8-15) and Newman (12-15, 15-9) before sweeping Pacelli 18-16 and 15-3.
Amherst's Becca Konkol finished with 35 individual service points while Meghan Simkins had 25, Melissa Kayon 21
and Jenny Orsund 20. Simkins led the Falcons in kills with 20 and Kayon had 11. Konkol had 15 assists.
"We had our times when we did not play well. We experienced a lot of things we can work on in practice,"
Jensen said. "We got the season off to a good start."
Pacelli opened the invite with two straight losses to Rosholt (7-15 and 6-15) and then split with Newman (9-15,
15-10). The Cardinals swept A-B (15-11 and 15-10) and Tigerton (15-8 and 15-11) before running into the Falcons.
"This was an excellent showing for our first time out," new Pacelli coach Shelly Johnson said. "The
girls worked together and were having a lot of fun.
"We have a great future and are looking forward to playing more."
After facing Amherst to open the invite, A-B dropped two games to Tigerton (10-15 and 11-15) and a pair to Pacelli.
The Eagles bounced back and split with Rosholt (15-13 and 8-15) before ending their day with losses to Newman (4-15
and 4-15).
"Overall it was a disappointing day. We have a lot of things to work on," A-B coach George Young said.
"We played our best game against Rosholt and then started to run out of gas in the second game against Rosholt."
Krista Cummings led A-B with 21 points, including eight aces. Sarah Berry had 17 kills, Tabitha Sawyer had 19 assists
and Stephanie Jenz had 18 saves. |
