UW-SP grad Kriewaldt sticks with Lions

Former University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point linebacker Clint Kriewaldt made the final cut for the Detroit Lions and will be with the team in its season opener Sunday at Seattle.

Kriewaldt, the 1998 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was a sixth round draft choice of the Lions and the only NCAA Division 3 player selected in the April 1999 National Football League draft.

During the preseason in Detroit, Kriewaldt ranked sixth on the team with six tackles, including four solo stops.

A native of Shiocton, Wis., he is expected to see action with the Lions' special teams this season and is listed third on the team's depth chart at the outside "Sam" linebacker position.

While at UW-SP, Kriewaldt was the only four-time unanimous first-team All-Conference player in the history of the WIAC while finishing as the school's all-time leading tackler with 416.

He was named a first-team All-American by all three Division 3 national publications as a senior and scored 16 rushing touchdowns as a fullback the past two seasons.

The Lions finished the preseason with a 1-3 record. Detroit will host Green Bay Sept. 19 and the Lions will visit Kriewaldt's home state and Lambeau Field to visit the Packers Nov. 21.
