Pacelli football beats SPASH 20-14 in battle of the JVs

Chalk up another one for David.

The Pacelli High School junior varsity football team jumped to a 20-0 lead over the Stevens Point Area Senior High's JV squad Monday and held on for a 20-14 win over Goliath.

Although the game was only at the junior varsity level, the two schools don't meet each other often in any sport.

"We played hard, we played strong," Pacelli coach Dave Wysocki said. "We had a couple of spots in the third quarter where we got beat deep and got complacent. But we came back and played a tough fourth quarter.

"Overall we're not very big, but our quickness worked to our advantage."

After the Panthers crept back within 20-14 in the third on a Josh Kujawa touchdwon run, the Cardinals - with about five minutes left - made a defensive stand in the red zone to seal the victory.

A Pacelli pass interference penalty put SPASH at 12-yard line and Kujawa followed with a four-yard run to the eight. But that was as far as the Panthers would get, as incomplete passes to Chase Kostichka on third and fourth downs ended the potential game-winning drive.

Pacelli's Jeff Herzog opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run and Justin Anderson got in from one yard out in the second quarter. The Cardinals didn't convert either two-point conversion tries and led 12-0.

Zac Thome made it 20-0 when he outran SPASH's secondary for a 60-yard touchdown reception from Pat Schmitt. The Panthers got on the board later in the quarter on Kris Burclaw's 4-yard touchdown pass to Justin Haley.

Herzog and Anderson combined for 187 yards on the ground, as Herzog rushed for 102 and Anderson collected 85.

"Both guys ran real hard, made people miss and dragged some tacklers down the field," Wysocki said. "Defensively, we had some big hits. That's the tough kind of football we can play."
