SPASH
Boys cross country: Josh Garbe paced the field at the Fond du Lac Relays Saturday and helped the Panthers
to a third place finish. Garbe, a senior, covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:29 to set a new course record. SPASH's
first five runners combined for a time of 1:26:58, just over a minute behind winner Oshkosh West (1:25:44). Chris
Solinsky (17:13), Chris Jahntz (17:24), Kyle Patoka (17:54), Curt Mitchell (17:58), Scott Winkleman (18:03), Quinn
Baumberger (18:07), Ryan Koelemay (18:08) and Nate Hurst (18:29) ran the relay meet for SPASH, where the fastest
five times are added to determine the team standings.
SPASH held out its top runners, but still ran away with the Rosholt Invitational title last Thursday, scoring
56 points.
Girls cross country: The SPASH girls also took third place at the Fond du Lac Relays Saturday, with five
girls combining for a time of 1:22:11. Kjersten Johnson (15:57), Kim Klosno (16:25), Laine Willkom (16:27), Alexis
Sustman (16:35), Katie Ziehr (16:47), Christy Griffen (16:50), Taylor Ebens (17:14), Ashley Francis (17:35) and
Kerry Hyland (17:50) ran for the Panthers. Neenah won the meet with a combined time of 1:17.23.
The Panthers rested their top runners last Thursday at the Rosholt Invite too and captured first place anyway
with 54 points.
Boys soccer: The Panthers was defensive Saturday in the Wisconsin Rapids soccer tournament, allowing
only one goal to win the tourney with a 3-0 record. SPASH topped Sun Prairie 2-1, Appleton North 2-0 and Eau Claire
North 4-0.
The Panthers held on to their one-point lead in the WVC last Thursday with a 2-0 shutout win over D.C. Everest.
After a scoreless first half, Gaute Egen and Noah Jakusz each scored goals to give SPASH the win.
Girls swimming: SPASH didn't have any trouble last Thursday against D.C. Everest, 133-36. The Panthers
remained unbeaten in the Valley (5-0) after finishing 1-2 in 10 of the 11 races.
"We mixed up our lineup quite a bit tonight to allow our gals to swim other than their usual events and
to search for swimmers stepping up to round out our tournament team," SPASH coach George Klingbail.
Girls tennis: Six SPASH players get to continue their season after advancing to the WIAA Sectional round.
No. 1 singles player Ann Howley and the No. 1 doubles team of Lauren Hom and Meagan Palmer had byes in Monday's
sub-sectional round and automatically advanced. Stephani VanKleef (No. 4 singles) and the No. 3 doubles team of
Casie Crubaugh and Jessie Palmer both received first round byes and then disposed of their opponents to move on
to the next round.
Colleen Dougherty (No. 2 singles), Claire Boylan (No.3) and the No. 2 doubles team of Amber Yudchitz and Bailey
Menzel were eliminated after dropping one of their matches.
Girls volleyball: The Panthers ran into undefeated Marshfield Tuesday night and were swept on the Tigers'
home floor, 15-7, 15-1, 15-9. SPASH is now 4-6 in the conference.
The Panthers finished 7-7 and were fourth at the Neenah Rocket Invitational. SPASH swept two games from Shawano,
Hartland Arrowhead and Green Bay East and split with Waupun. The Panthers were swept by West Allis Hale, Neenah
and Marshfield.
SPASH got an ugly win over Wisconsin Rapids last Thursday, taking the fifth and decisive game of the match,
15-8. The Panthers split the first four with the Red Raiders, 7-15, 15-13, 15-7, 8-15. Amber Lenze was a perfect
23-for-23 serving; Kristin Rosicky and Rachel Kreuser each had 12 kills; and Beth Wright added 12 assists.
Pacelli
Football: The Cardinals are back to the .500 mark after a 20-0 drubbing of Fond du Lac Winnebago Lutheran
Friday at Goerke Field. Steve Wiczek returned an interception for a 31-yard touchdown to put Pacelli ahead, 6-0.
The two-point conversion try failed.
The Cardinals made it 14-0 on a Neil Jurgella's 45-yard run and Justin Anderson's catch on the two-point conversion
try. Ahern Cashin gave Pacelli a 20-0 lead at the half with a 1-yard touchdown run, and the Cardinals' defense
shut out Winnebago's wishbone offense.
Boys cross country: The Cardinals had a breakthrough day Tuesday at the Tomahawk Invitational, where Pacelli
finished third. Franz Klein led the way, taking seventh while breaking the 17-minute barrier (16:52). Nick Gross
(40th in 18:13), Chris Fletcher (71st in 19:10), Nate Kryshak (74th in 19:19) and Joe Miller (76th in 19:34) comprised
Pacelli's top five. Jason Lepak (79th in 19:49) and Evan Kruzitski (89th in 20:25).
Klein finished fourth in 17:31 and Pacelli grabed a sixth place finish at the Rosholt Invite last Thursday.
Gross (28th in 19:05), Fletcher (41st in 20:14), Miller (44th in 20:27) and Kryshak (49th in 20:40) finished in
Pacelli's top five. Also running were Kruzitski (61st in 21:13), Nathan Herbert (64th in 21:28) and Stephan Klein
(86th in 24:55).
Girls cross country: Katie Hansel (30th in 16:59) and Angela Peters (53rd in 17:57) competed for Pacelli
at the Tomahawk Invite Tuesday.
Hansel returned from injury and finished 24th overall in 17:40 last Thursday at the Rosholt Invite. Pacelli's
other varsity competitor, Peters, wasn't far behind, taking 34th in 17:59.
Girls tennis: Pacelli's season ended Saturday at the WISAA Region 1 Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids. The
Cardinals didn't score a point and their highest finish came at No. 2 doubles, where Jennifer Whittington and Aerin
Spitz took fourth.
Girls volleyball: Pacelli finished 7-7 Saturday at the Oshkosh North Invitational, an event filled with
several large schools. The Cardinals swept Sheboygan North and Oshkosh Lordes, but were swept by Freedom and Oshkosh
North. Pacelli split two games with Appleton Xavier, Oshkosh West and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.
Almond-Bancroft
Football: A-B took one on the chin Friday night at home, dropping a 44-0 contest to Rosholt. The Eagles
were hurt by several turnovers and a lackluster offense, which gained less than 50 yards.
Girls volleyball: Port Edwards got the best of the Eagles Tuesday, sweeping A-B 15-9, 15-6, 15-4. The
Eagles fell behind early in the first two games and couldn't recover. In the third game, A-B got a 4-2 lead, but
Port Edwards stormed back to score 13 straight points.
The Eagles dropped three games at home to Rosholt last Thursday, 6-15, 10-15, 6-15. Krista Cummings had nine
kills for A-B, and Tabitha Sawyer had 15 points, four aces and 14 assists.
Amherst
Football: The Falcons gave up two interception returns for touchdowns and Bonduel dropped Amherst, 27-0
Friday. Amhest could only muster 121 yards of offense while the Falcon defense held the Bears to only 145 yards.
Boys cross country: Amherst just missed a runner-up spot at the Waupaca Invitational Tuesday, finishing
with 70 points. Appleton Xavier was second with 69 while Little Chute took the title with 39. Dan Ehr finished
fourth overall (17:41), followed by Jordan Selbo (14th in 18:27), Jonathan Bronk (15th in 18:31), Scott Nykl (17th
in 18:36) and Jeremy Sherf (20th in 18:37).
Amherst was second to SPASH last Thursday at the Rosholt Invite. The Falcons, who scored 99 points, were led
by Ehr's sixth place finish in 17:51. Selbo (18th in 18:32), Bronk (22nd in 18:38), Sherf (23rd in 18:45) and Dan
Werner (30th in 19:13) completed the top five. Nykl (31st in 19:17), Jeremy Leck (32nd in 19:18) and Tim Olson
(35th in 19:31) also ran for Amherst.
Girls cross country: The Falcons were fourth at the Waupaca Invite, paced by Jane Ovanin's fourth place
finish (15:49). Samantha Diver also cracked the top 10, taking sixth place in 15:57. Ashley Bavery (31st in 18:40),
Karen Ehr (37th in 19:04) and Jenny Woyak (38th in 19:10) rounded out the top five.
Ovanin won her second straight race, as she took top honors at the Rosholt Invite last Thursday, finishing the
4,000-meter course in 15:27. Amherst finished fifth with 130 points behind Diver (fifth in 16:06), Woyak (38th
in 18:23), Leah Hunter (42nd in 18:45) and Ehr (44th in 19:00), while Jackie Hucke (49th in 20:04), Ruby Legault
(51st in 20:40) and Jamie Henke (52nd in 20:48) also ran.
Girls volleyball: Amherst (9-2) had an easy time Tuesday on the road with Marion. The Falcons swept the
home team, who was ahead of Amherst in the conference race 15-8, 15-6, 15-2. Melissa Kayon had eight kills and
Meghan Simkins added six. Becca Konkol led Amherst with nine individual service points and with 12 assists.
"We went out and got the job done," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said. "Melissa Kayon hit the ball
well for us."
The Falcons took two of three from Shiocton to improve to 8-2 and stay in the CWC Large School Division race.
Amherst dropped the visitors 15-4, 15-4 in the first two games before Shiocton bounced back for a 16-14 win.
"We came out, took control and didn't have any major breakdowns," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said.
"We played well. It was really nice to see."
Rosholt
Football: Twenty second quarter points helped Rosholt on its way to a 44-0 rout over A-B. Running back
Randy Printz had a pair of touchdowns while Jon Betker, Roche Rossier and Ryan Zdroik all found the end zone for
the Hornets.
The Rosholt defense forced several fumbles in the sloppy and chilly conditions and held the Eagles to fewer
than 50 yards of total offense.
Boys cross country: The Hornets were eighth at their home invite last Thursday, scoring 190 points. Pat
Knutson (21st in 18:38), Joel Skornia (24th in 18:46), Brady Staszak (36th in 19:34), Bob Omernik (53rd in 20:53)
and Rob Cherek (56th in 21:02) ran for Rosholt.
"It was good to see us with a full team and actually beat five teams and be fairly close to some teams
in our conference that will finish in the top half of our conference in two weeks," Rosholt coach Mike Trzebiatowski
said.
Girls cross country: Rosholt (72 points) finished third behind SPASH (54) and Wittenberg-Birnamwood (64)
at its home invite.
Tami Scott and Jen Zdroik gave the Hornets two of the top three finishers. Scott was second in 15:37, while
Zdroik wasn't far behind, taking third in 15:48. Lisa Yenter (21st in 17:31), Lindsey Peplinski (22nd in 17:35)
and Nicky Bembenek (24th in 17:43) completed the top five while Amy Scott (31st in 17:58), Jackie Yenter (32nd
in 17:59) and Pirjo Eelmaa (37th in 18:19) also ran.
Girls volleyball: The Hornets took two of three games at Bowler Tuesday, moving Rosholt a game above
.500 at 6-5. Rosholt won a close 17-15 battle in the first game, dropped the second 9-15, but came back in the
decisive third game to win 15-7.
Jenna Eschenbauch had seven kills for the Hornets and Lana Daulton had 12 assists.
