SPASH

Football: SPASH routed Rhinelander last Thursday, 49-6 in its regular season finale. The Panthers, who hosted the Hodags after threats at Rhinelander High School forced the game to be played at Goerke Field, scored 20 points in the third quarter to break the game open.

Gabe Bauer and Casey Taggatz each caught TD strikes from Adamczak and backup quarterback Kris Burclaw found Chase Kostichka for a fourth quarter score. Ryan Hoffman also kicked a 41-yard field goal.

Boys soccer: The Panthers advanced to a Thursday, Oct. 28 showdown with Wisconsin Rapids in the WIAA Sectional semifinals with a 1-0 win over Neenah Saturday. SPASH will take on the Red Raiders in Menasha at 7 p.m. If the Panthers win, they will take on the Sheboygan South/Fond du Lac winner Saturday in Neenah.

Girls volleyball: Neenah swept three games from SPASH last Friday to eliminate the Panthers from the WIAA postseason. The Rockets took the first two games 15-10, 15-7 before squeaking out game three 17-15.

Football: The Cardinals closed out their Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference football career with a 21-12 victory over Marshfield Columbus last Friday. Pacelli completed its runner-up season in the conference by scoring twice in the second quarter and once in the third.

Neil Jurgella (one yard) and Ahern Cashin (three yards) each had touchdown runs while Matt Kruzicki hauled in a 24-yard Steve Wiczek TD pass.

Soccer: Nate Swenson scored a hat trick and was a part of another goal as Pacelli dumped Wausau Newman 6-3 in the first round of the Division 2 Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.

Swenson found the back of the net for Pacelli's first goal and then assisted Jaime Friess as the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 advantage. Swenson and Steve Baumhofer both scored before halftime to give Pacelli a 4-0 lead.

Newman roared back with two straight goals before Baumhofer put Pacelli ahead 5-2. Newman and Swenson traded goals as the Cardinals advanced.

Almond-Bancroft

Tigerton jumped out to a 14-0 lead before A-B scored four unanswered touchdowns to take a 28-14 advantage. The Tigers roared back, though, for the win. Blake Schultz and Matt Cummings each hauled in Chris Leary TD passes, Nick Sanchez had a 51-yard scoring scamper and Cummings returned the second half kickoff for 75 yards.

Amherst

Football: Manawa had its way with the Falcons and ended Amherst's season last Thursday with a 56-16 win over the Falcons. Paul Konkol scored two first half touchdowns (five and six yards) but Manawa exploded for 35 first half points.

Girls volleyball: After disposing of Rosholt and Bonduel, Amherst hosts Markesan Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the WIAA Sectional semifinal. If the Falcons beat the Hornets, Amherst would travel to Marathon at 6 p.m. to take on the Colby/Oconto winner for the sectional title.

In the sectional quarterfinals, Amherst dropped the first game to Bonduel, 12-15 before sweeping the final three - 15-4, 15-11, 15-7.

"After losing the first game, we did a much better job of playing more aggressive, both at the net and in the back line," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said. "This is a nice win and we want to keep it going."

Anne Stanislawski had 20 individual service points against the Bears. Meghan Simkins had 18 kills, Melissa Kayon had 15 and Becca Konkol dished out 31 assists last Saturday.
