SPASH
Football: Wisconsin Rapids spoiled SPASH's Homecoming Friday night, handing the Panthers a 37-27 Wisconsin
Valley Conference loss. The Red Raiders ran all over SPASH for 355 yards on 52 carries. Don Hopp did the most damage,
posting 254 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries.
The Panthers held a 14-10 lead with 56 seconds left in the first half when Hopp turned the tide with a 55-yard
TD run. SPASH got its first half scores on Ross Adamczak touchdown passes to Gabe Bauer (40 yards) and Casey Taggatz
(18 yards). In the third quarter, Rapids and SPASH traded touchdowns before the Red Raiders scored two more in
the fourth to seal the win. Bauer, who finished with 176 yards on six catches, caught two Adamczak touchdown passes
in the second half (23 and 55 yards). Adamczak finished with 285 yards on 13-of-25 passing.
Boys cross country: The Panthers placed their first five runners in the top 11 to come away with the
Wisconsin Rapids Invitational title Saturday. Josh Garbe and Chris Solinsky led the way with a 1-2 finish as SPASH
scored 27 points, five fewer than second place Oshkosh West . Garbe won the 5,000 meter race in 16:10, while Solinsky
grabbed runner-up honors in 16:50. Chris Jahtz also cracked the top five (fifth in 17:07), while A.J. Moen (eighth
in 17:18) and Kyle Patoka (11th in 17:34) completed the top five. Quinn Baumberger (14th in 17:38), Owen Schuh
(17th in 17:44) and Scott Winkleman (21st in 18:01) also ran.
Girls cross country: SPASH had three top 10 finishers and took second at the Wisconsin Rapids Invite
Saturday. Laine Willkom (sixth in 16:07) paced the Panthers, who scored 58 points, 20 more than first place Waukesha
South. Alexis Sustman (eighth in 16:20), Kjersten Johnson (10th in 16:23), Katie Ziehr (13th in 16:32) and Christy
Griffen (21st in 16:43) comprised SPASH's top five. Also running were Kim Klosno (28th in 16:55), Danielle Gralla
(29th in 16:59) and Taylor Ebens (39th in 17:27).
Boys soccer: Wausau East kept the Panthers from clinching their second straight WVC championship Tuesday,
as the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie. SPASH's Cheng Yang scored two times in less than a minute to give his team
a 2-0 lead early in the first half. But the Lumberjacks rallied for two goals before halftime to knot the score.
The Panthers pitched a shutout in their own SPASH Invitational Saturday. The home team dropped Northland Pines
1-0, Oshkosh North 4-0 and Eau Claire Memorial 1-0.
Dan Schmeekle scored SPASH's lone goal against Northland Pines; Salah Khan, Noah Jakusz, Cheng Yang and Gaute
Engen had goals against Oshkosh North; and Kahn found the back of the net against Eau Claire Memorial. Last Thursday,
SPASH topped Wisconsin Rapids 2-0.
Girls swimming: SPASH had its way with Marshfield last Thursday, taking the Tigers 114-56. April Burant
and Kara Martin both won a pair of events and were members of two winning relay teams. Callie Wild, Rachel Herder,
Jacci Menzel and Hayley Lazarski were a part of the relay victories.
Girls tennis: Ann Howley (No.1 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of Meagan Palmer and Lauren Hom advanced
to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state meet last Thursday. State competition is Oct. 14-16
at the Nielsen Stadium in Madison. No. 4 singles player Stephani VanKleef won the sectional title but only No.
1 and No. 2 singles compete at the individual tourney.
Girls volleyball: SPASH went 4-0 at the Wisconsin Valley Invite in Wisconsin Rapids Saturday to improve
to 8-6 in the conference. The Panthers beat Antigo 15-6, 15-9; Wisconsin Rapids 15-6, 15-9; Wausau West 12-15,
15-7, 15-8; and Rhinelander 15-8, 12-15, 15-6.
Rachel Kreuser led SPASH with 27 kills on the day while Kristin Rosicky had 26. Rosicky also collected 43 service
points and Amber Lenze was 36-of-36 serving. Darcia Wesenberg had 33 assists.
Pacelli
Football: The Cardinals celebrated their Homecoming Tuesday by handing Wisconsin Rapids Assumption its
first loss of the season, 27-7. Pacelli (4-3 overall, 2-1 in the Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference) held a
14-7 lead at halftime, thanks to two Charles Usher touchdowns. The first was a two-yard TD reception on fourth
down and two and then he picked off a John Minarcin pass and returned it for a 40-yard TD.
Quarterback Steve Wiczek hooked up with Pat Schmitt for an 18-yard touchdown in the third quarter before Neil
Jurgella put it away with a 40-yard TD run. Jurgella gained 168 of Pacelli's 173 yards on the ground.
Boys cross country: Franz Klein took ninth in Division 2 and paced Pacelli to a sixth place finish at
the Wisconsin Rapids Invite Saturday. Klein, who was 19th overall in 17:29, was followed by Nate Kryshak (36th
in 19:21), Chris Fletcher (42nd in 19:52), Nick Gross (43rd in 19:56) and Joe Miller (45th in 20:05). Also running
was Evan Kruzitski (58th in 22:09).
Girls cross country: A pair of Cardinals ran to top 25 finishes in Division 2 at the Wisconsin Rapids
Invite Saturday. Katie Hansel (18th in 17:38) and Angela Peters (25th in 18:00) were the lone Pacelli entrants.
Soccer: Pacelli fell to Waupaca for the second time in as many weeks on Tuesday. The Cardinals, who are
now 12-6-1 overall, saw the Comets score two goals in the late goings to lose 3-2. Nate Swenson had both Pacelli
goals.
Pacelli split two games Saturday with Wausau Newman and Marshfield Columbus at Lake Pacawa Park. The Cardinals
won the first game over Newman, 6-3, as Swenson scored three goals. George McCorkell added a pair of scores and
Steve Baumhofer had one too in the win. In its second game, the Dons shut out Pacelli 3-0.
Girls volleyball: Hortonville disposed of the Cardinals in three straight games Tuesday, topping Pacelli
15-5, 15-3, 15-6. Laura McCorkell had five kills while Toni Johnson had five assists and eight digs.
Almond-Bancroft
Football: A-B dropped to 2-3 in the Central Wisconsin Conference with a 40-12 loss to undefeated Iola-Scandinavia
(7-0). Kurt Kielblock did the damage for the Thunderbirds, scoring three touchdowns while gaining 281 yards on
18 carries. Both A-B scores came in the fourth quarter.
Girls volleyball: The Eagles dominated Plainfield-Tri County last Thursday, sweeping the Penguins in
three games. A-B allowed Tri-County to score only eight points in the three games combined and ran away with wins
of 15-1, 15-3, 15-4.
"It was Homecoming and we were playing Tri-County and the team was fired up and ready to play," A-B
coach Roger Young said. "We played together as a team and played extremely well. We passed and served the
ball extremely well, which put T-C on the defensive all night long."
Stephanie Jenz led the Eagles with 10 service points and Cassie Lamb had nine. Jenz added three kills while
Tabitha Sawyer dished out eight assists.
"Renee Reince and Stephanie Jenz hit the ball hard and Tabitha Sawyer and Natasha Russell did a good job
setting," Young said.
Amherst
Football: The Falcons soared on the ground and through the air in a 24-0 blanking of Menominee Indian
Friday. Amherst's Paul Konkol ran for 200 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns to help his team improve
to 3-2 in the CWC. The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the first quarter on Nate Peplinski's 54-yard pass to Jason
Heinz. Amherst's other TD came on a Kris Blenker 26-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, the Falcons allowed only 143 yards.
Girls volleyball: With first place in the CWC on the line, Amherst took two of three matches from Weyauwega-Fremont.
The Falcons won the first two, 15-13 and 15-8, only to have W-F come back and take the third, 15-5.
"It was a match for first place and we came up big," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said. "We really
played well. We had a good contribution from everyone."
Betsy Hoffman led Amherst with 10 service points, Meghan Simkins had 14 kills and Becca Konkol picked up 15
assists.
Rosholt
Football: Port Edwards surprised the Hornets last Friday, topping Rosholt in overtime, 20-14. The Blackhawks
scored the final two touchdowns of the game, one with just under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and
another to win it in OT. The Hornets held a 14-7 lead after a Ryan Zdroik interception return and a Jon Betker
touchdown run. Rosholt outgained Port Edwards 249-166.
Boys cross country: Freshman Brady Staszak led Rosholt to a seventh place finish with 191 points. Staszak
was the first Hornet to finish, taking 28th in 18:45. Pat Knutson (32nd in 19:00), Joel Skornia (34th in 19:10),
Rob Cherek (44th in 19:57) and Bob Omernik (53rd in 20:42) rounded out the top five.
"After coming out just two weeks ago Brady was our number one runner and is willing to lay it on the line,"
Rosholt coach Mike Trzebiatowski said.
Girls cross country: The Hornets took second at the Wisconsin Rapids Invite behind a pair of top five
finishes. Tami Scott finished second in Division 2 (15:30) and Jen Zdroik was fourth in 15:59. Jacki Yenter (13th
in 17:21), Lisa Yenter (14th in 17:26) and Amy Scott (16th in 17:44) rounded out the top five, giving Rosholt 49
points. Nicky Bembenek (23rd in 18:02), Lindsey Peplinski (24th in 18:16) and Pirjo Eelmaa (32nd in 19:01) also
ran.
"We would have been a close fifth if all of the divisions were scored together," Rosholt coach Mike
Trzebiatowski said. "And out of 24 schools that's pretty good."
Girls volleyball: Rosholt topped both Tigerton and Plainfield Tuesday to move to 8-5 in the CWC small
school division. The Hornets took two of three from Tigerton (15-11, 4-15, 15-7) and swept the Penguins (15-7,
15-6, 16-14).
