Panthers win third straight swim title

For the third straight year, the Stevens Point Area Senior High girls swimming team is the Wisconsin Valley Conference champion.

The Panthers made the three-peat look easy, too, as they scored 497 points - 155 more than runner-up Wausau East (342).

SPASH had five first place finishes and a quartet of seconds.

Taking home the gold in individual events were April Burant in the 100 butterfly (1:01.76), Kara Martin in the 100 backstroke (1:01.20) and Liz Potter in the 200 freestyle (2:04.66). The same relay team of Martin, Burant, Jacci Menzel and Potter took top honors in two races - the 200 medley relay (1:54.48) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:47.50).

The four runner-up finishes came from Martin in the 200 individual medley (2:15.39), Rachel Herder in the 100 butterfly (1:04.19), Menzel in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.41) and the 200 medley relay of Marie Jacobs, Andrea Olson, Rachel Herder and Liz Herder (1:59.58).

SPASH also had a trio of thirds: Burant in 200 individual medley (2:20.48), Heather Wallner in the 500 freestyle (5:44.94) and Olson in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.70). Earning fourths were Wallner in the 200 freestyle (2:09.43), Liz Herder in 50 freestyle (26.61), Menzel in 100 freestyle (57.74), Jacobs in 100 backstroke (1:06.12) and the 200 freestyle relay of Liz Herder, Jacobs, Callie Wild and Megan Golla (1:49.03).

The Panthers had a pair of fifth and sixth place finishers as well. Taking fifth were Jacobs in the 200 freestyle (2:10.21) and Potter in the 100 freestyle (58.59) while Wild (50 freestyle in 27.08) and Paddy Browne (500 freestyle in 5:56.91) both finished sixth.
