The Week in Review

SPASH

Boys basketball: Neenah came out firing and shot down SPASH's state tournament hopes last Saturday in Menasha, 69-51. The Rockets took a 24-12 lead after one quarter and then put the game away by outscoring the Panthers 23-8 in the third. SPASH trailed 66-36 with about five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Casey Taggatz scored 13 points while Nick Bennett added 11.

Pacelli

Boys basketball: The Cardinals couldn't get their offense going and fell 55-29 to host Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in a WISAA Regional last Friday. Pacelli (14-14 overall) trailed 20-11 at halftime and then were outscored 15-7 in the third quarter as the Royals grabbed a 35-18 lead. No Cardinals scored in double figures. Josh Owens led Pacelli with nine points.

Amherst

Boys basketball: Auburndale ended Amherst's season last Thursday, topping the Falcons 43-30 in the WIAA Regional semifinals at SPASH. Amherst (21-1) trailed by seven at halftime and 33-25 entering the final quarter. In the fourth, Auburndale controlled the ball on offense and took only one field goal. But the Apaches ran down the clock, thwarting any hopes of an Amherst rally. Dylan Page scored 23 points for Amherst in his final high school game.

Girls basketball: An Amherst rally at the end of regulation sent the game into overtime and the Falcons topped Pittsville 30-28 in the WIAA Sectional final Saturday at Wausau East. A third quarter comeback put the Falcons back in the game and a Jenni Orsund jumper sent the game into overtime. In the extra session, Amherst took a 29-25 lead and an Orsund free throw sealed the win. Orsund and Meghan Simkins both scored 12 points to lead the Falcons.

A late comeback kept Amherst's season alive last Friday night, as the Falcons edged Markesan 40-39 in the WIAA Sectional semifinals at Waupaca. Amherst trailed 39-35 with 14 seconds to go when Anne Stanislawski nailed the first 3-pointer of her career to pull the Falcons within 39-38. Orsund gave Amherst the win by stealing the inbounds pass and making a layin with four seconds left. Orsund scored 17 points to lead the Falcons.
