Amherst, SPASH boys claim outright titles

The Amherst High School boys basketball team reclaimed the conference title after a one-year hiatus from the top.

The Falcons (20-0 overall, 14-0 in the conference), who won Central Wisconsin Conference large division crowns in 1997 and 1998, secured their third championship in four years by topping Weyauwega-Fremont 54-44 last Thursday. The host-Indians were the defending champs.

"Going 20-0 in the regular season is a great accomplishment. Winning the conference outright, beating a very good defending championship team on their own floor is a good way to end the regular season."

Amherst jumped to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and withstood a W-F third quarter rally to clinch the title. Dylan Page had another huge game, scoring 36 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

"Dylan Page was outstanding and Paul Konkol did a very, very good job defending Matt Rohde," Jensen said.

SPASH

The Stevens Point Area Senior High boys basketball team may want to send Wausau East a thank-you card. The Panthers (13-3 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference) won the conference title outright Friday night, when the Lumberjacks knocked off Rhinelander (12-4) 72-56. If the Hodags had won, SPASH would've shared the title with Rhinelander.
