Plover Legion off to state

Plover Post 543 is looking to continue its momentum at the AAA Legion State Tournament.

The team, which is appearing in the tournament for the first time since 1996, takes on Appleton Post 38 at 4 p.m. in its opening game Friday. The double-elimination tourney, which runs through Tuesday, is being held at Johannes Park in Green Bay.

Plover is one of eight teams in the state tourney. The Milwaukee Bulldogs, La Crosse, Marinette, Janesville, De Pere and the Green Bay Shockers are other teams competing.

The Black Sox advanced to state last weekend with a 7-6 victory over Wausau Post 10, a game highlighted by Bryan Martzahl's three-run homer in the eighth.

Plover coach Kraig Terpstra hopes the Black Sox can keep their momentum going, not only from the title game.

"I think we'll have more momentum from the last couple of weeks," Terpstra said. "I'm looking for us to continue our consistency. If we do, we'll compete well."

"You just play one game at a time and worry about playing your best game," Terpstra added.

If Plover takes the state title, the team would then advance to the Central Plains National Regional in Dickinson, N.D., Aug. 12-16. The American Legion World Series will be held in Middleton, Conn. Aug. 20-24.
