SPASH
Boys basketball: A balanced inside-outside attack helped the Panthers run away with a 68-50 victory over
Wausau West at home Tuesday night. SPASH (7-2 overall, 5-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference) held a 31-23 halftime
lead and then opened the advantage to 12 points heading into the fourth quarter.
Forward/center Ross Adamczak led SPASH with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting while fellow post player John Allee
scored 13. Forward Nick Bennett had 11 and point guard Casey Taggatz scored 12.
For the game, SPASH shot a hot 29-of-45 (64 percent) while Wausau West was 19-of-52 (37 percent).
Girls basketball: The same day classes resumed, the Panthers passed a big test Tuesday night in a 50-42
road win over Wausau West. SPASH, which improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the WVC, handed the Warriors (5-1 WVC)
their first conference loss of the season.
The Panthers got things going right away and grabbed a 17-9 lead through the first quarter. The SPASH advantage
was eight points, 37-30, heading into the fourth quarter when the Warriors rallied with a 10-3 spurt to even the
score at 40-40. The Panthers then pulled away down the stretch.
Steph Karaliunas paced the Panthers with 10 points. Janel McCarville and Michele Rosicky both had nine points.
Wrestling: Ty Pope finished second and the Panthers finished 15th at the 33-team Northern Badger wrestling
tournament last Wednesday.
Pope advanced to the championship match at 140 pounds, only to fall 3-1 to Tyler Turner of Spring Valley. Robb
Kolodziej (275) finished fifth, Jed Haas (171) was sixth and Rob King (135) took ninth.
Pacelli
Wrestling: Four Cardinals placed in the top eight last Wednesday and Thursday at the 40-team Oshkosh
"On the Water" Classic. Neil Jurgella (160) was Pacelli's top finisher, taking fifth with a 5-2 record.
Ben Kissel (275) was seventh (4-2 record). Greg Snow (145) and Matt Schulist (171) each were eighth at 3-3.
"Neil Jurgella wrestled very well again. He lost to the eventual champion in the quarterfinals. But he
fought his way back through the wrestlebacks," Pacelli coach Jay Yenter said. "When Ben Kissel goes after
people, he's very tough to beat. He made one mistake and that was the difference between third and seventh."
As a team, Pacelli took 21st with 102.5 points.
"This was the first tournament that we dropped most of the guys down one weight class. You could definitely
see that we were a lot more comfortable at these weights," Yenter said.
Almond-Bancroft
Boys basketball: A quick start propelled the Eagles to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and won by 13,
63-50, at Wild Rose Tuesday.
A-B (5-2 overall, 5-1 in the Central Wisconsin Conference small division) was led by Kent Dernbach's 23 points
and four steals. Trevor Dernbach added 16 and six rebounds. The Eagles shot 17-of-37 (46 percent) from the field
and hit 20-of-25 (80 percent) free throws.
Girls basketball: A-B skunked Wild Rose in the first quarter, taking a 20-0 lead and didn't look back
in a 45-29 road win Tuesday night.
Stephanie Jenz had 14 points to pace the Eagles, who improved to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the CWC small division.
Ellen Riggenbach had 10 points and nine rebounds. Darlene Turzinski chipped in nine rebounds.
Amherst
Boys basketball: The Falcons outscored Marion 38-24 in the second half and topped the Mustangs 65-44
on the road Tuesday night. Amherst led 27-21 at halftime.
Dylan Page poured in 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Amherst (7-0 overall, 4-0 CWC large division). Jason
Heinz scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds while Paul Konkol dished out eight assists.
Girls basketball: A pair of Marion free throws with 18 seconds left gave the Mustangs a 41-40 upset win
at Amherst Tuesday night. The Falcons, who led 22-14 at halftime, allowed Marion to outscore them 15-6 in the third
quarter as the Mustangs took a one-point advantage into the fourth quarter.
Jenny Orsund scored 14 points for Amherst (7-2 overall, 3-2 in CWC large) and Meghan Simkins had 11 points.
Wrestling: The Falcons finished in 37th place with 10 points last Wednesday and Thursday at the Oshkosh
"On the Water Classic."
Rosholt
Boys basketball: The Hornets had a tough time in the second and third quarters as Bowler handed Rosholt
(5-2 overall, 4-1 in CWC small division) its first conference loss of the season, 56-52, at Bowler Tuesday night.
Rosholt held a 13-11 first quarter lead but the Panthers outscored the Hornets 31-14 in the next two quarters.
Rosholt put it back together in the fourth quarter and rallied within two points with under a minute to go,
but Bowler sealed the win at the free throw line. The Hornets outscored the Panthers 25-14 in the quarter.
Ryan Zdroik had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead Rosholt.
Girls basketball: A big third quarter helped Rosholt double-up on Bowler Tuesday night at home, 55-26.
In that period, the Hornets outscored Bowler 22-4 thanks in large part to a full-court press that gave Bowler fits.
Amy Scott led Rosholt with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Jenna Eschenbauch had 10 points and Christine Check pulled
down 10 rebounds.
Wrestling: A quintet of Hornets had top eight finishes as Rosholt was 15th out of 40 teams (121 points)
in the Oshkosh "On the Water Classic" last Wednesday and Thursday. Jon Betker (171) led Rosholt with
a third place finish (5-1 record) while Aaron Yenter (160) was fourth at 4-2. Geoff Yenter (125) took sixth while
Scott Walenski (135) and Senica Omernik (275) both were eighth.
