SPASH
Boys basketball: A big second quarter helped the Panthers to a 76-58 win over Wausau East at home Tuesday
night. SPASH (11-2 overall, 8-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference) outscored the Lumberjacks 18-8 in the quarter
and took a 32-19 halftime lead. Nick Bennett paced the Panthers with 20 points, Josh Hall scored 17 and John Allee
had 13.
The Panthers doubled up on DeForest in the first quarter, 22-11, and went on to a 74-52 non-conference win at
home Saturday night. SPASH had five players in double figures, led by Bennett's 22 points. Allee had 14, Hall 12,
Marc Konopacki 11 and Casey Taggatz 10. DeForest committed 27 turnovers compared to nine for SPASH.
Girls basketball: SPASH routed Wausau East on the road Tuesday night 60-26. The Panthers (8-1 in the
WVC) had big second and third quarters to open up an insurmountable 39-17 lead entering the fourth quarter. Janel
McCarville scored 17 points and Steph Karaliunas had 12.
The Panthers were outscored 19-5 in the second quarter and couldn't bounce back in a 55-37 non-conference loss
at Lakeland Saturday. SPASH trailed by three, 10-7, after one quarter and then saw the deficit increase to 29-12
at halftime.
No Panthers scored in double figures. Michele Rosicky led the team with nine points.
Gymnastics: SPASH racked up its highest score ever and went on to win the Mosinee/Edgar Invitational
Saturday. The Panthers finished with 138.075 points to take the seven-team event.
Tracy Knippel won the all-around title after placing first in the floor exercise, parallel bars and beam. She
was seventh in the vault. Nikki Cruz was second in the beam while Kimberly Jo Barden took fourth in the beam and
fifth in the vault.
"Now that we have cleaned up our routines we will be working on more difficult things and adding them to
our routines in order to improve our team score even more," SPASH coach Mary Olszewski said.
The Panthers beat Antigo last Thursday at home, 137-129.10. SPASH won each of the events, led by Knippel, who
took the all-around, the uneven parallel bars and the balance beam. Barden won the vault and Raenee Bugarske was
first in the floor exercise.
Hockey: The Panthers avenged their only loss of the season Tuesday night by beating Antigo 5-0 at home.
After a scoreless first period, SPASH (13-1 overall, 9-1 in the WVC) got goals from defensemen Josh Pagel and Mark
Lutz in the second. Marty Schultz, Joe Pavelski and Eric Anderson all scored in the third period. Shaun Kruzitski
stopped all 13 shots for a shutout in net.
Boys swimming: Nine Panthers finished first as SPASH downed Wisconsin Rapids last Thursday in a dual
meet, 114-56. Corey Prince (100-yard backstroke and 500 freestyle) won two events while Ted Conachen (100 freestyle),
Jacob Nantell (50 freestyle), Jon Ronzani (100 butterfly) and Matt Trautchold (200 individual medley) won their
respective events. The 200 medley relay (Prince, Conachen, Ronzani and Nantell), 200 freestyle (Ronzani, Conachen,
Trautchold and Nantell) and the 400 freestyle (Prince, Trautchold, Tim Anderson and David Curtis) also finished
first.
Wrestling: Ty Pope (140 pounds) and Robb Kolodziej (275) both won titles and 10 others placed as the
Panthers finished first at the Sheboygan North Invitational Saturday. Rob King (135) was second while Nate Kurszewski
(112) and Josh Beyerl (189) were both third. Grey Pope (fourth at 152), Jed Haas (fourth at 171), Adam Kurzynski
(fifth at 130), Jake Calhoun (sixth at 112), Kevin Duda (sixth at 125), Jim Louis (seventh at 119) and Josh Zinda
(eighth at 160) also placed.
The Panthers dropped a 35-30 dual meet at Antigo last Thursday. SPASH led 24-9 but the Red Robins won five straight
matches to seal the win. Kurszewski (112), King (135), Ty Pope (140) and Kolodziej (275) all pinned their opponents
while Calhoun (103) and Tyler Salvinski (119) won by decision.
Pacelli
Boys basketball: The Cardinals fought off a Wausau Newman rally for a 50-41 Central Wisconsin Catholic
Conference road victory Saturday. Pacelli led 18-9 at halftime but Newman crawled back into the game and got within
three points with less than three minutes to go. Josh Owens paced Pacelli with 13 points, Kyle Corrigan scored
12 and Kurt Kramer added 11.
Girls basketball: Two clutch Laura McCorkell free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining put Pacelli
ahead for good as the Cardinals beat Appleton Xavier 41-39 in a tight contest Wednesday night at home. Xavier missed
a 3-point attempt as time expired.
"It was just good to win one of these close games we've been in," Pacelli coach Jim Warzinik said.
"We've been in four or five games that have gone down to the wire. I think it will give the girls confidence
that they can win the close game."
McCorkell scored 18 points and Lindsey Radomski had 14 in the win. Xavier's Heidi Graf scored 12 points in the
first quarter but Pacelli switched defenses and Kim Schulist held her to just two points the rest of the way.
Wrestling: Weyawega-Fremont handed the Cardinals a 36-22 dual meet loss at Pacelli Tuesday night. The
Cardinals were without Tim Snow at 152 pounds and Neil Jurgella at 160 but W-F grabbed a 27-3 lead by winning seven
of the first eight matches.
"We let one get away on us tonight. We were missing two of our best kids, but even with the lineup that
we put out there, I thought we had a chance to win," Pacelli coach Jay Yenter said.
Franz Klein (112), Greg Snow (145) and Justin Anderson (160) won by decision while Matt Schulist (171) and Ben
Kissel (275) pinned their opponents.
Amherst
Boys basketball: The Falcons won the showdown of undefeated CWC large division teams, topping Weyauwega-Fremont
(6-1) 63-58. Dylan Page had 27 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks as Amherst connected on 26-of-48 shots from
the field (54 percent). Paul Konkol handed out nine assists.
"This was a very good win," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said. "We played well in many areas of
the game. This was a good team win."
Girls basketball: Amherst put its road game with Wittenberg-Birnamwood away in the fourth quarter, outscoring
the Chargers 12-2 in the period en route to a 41-26 victory Tuesday night. Meghan Simkins had 18 points and 13
rebounds while Jenni Orsund scored 12 points for Amherst (12-2 overall, 7-2 in CWC large).
Simkins scored a career-high 28 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots as the Falcons had their
way with Weyauwega-Fremont last Friday, 54-29. Visiting Amherst jumped to a 19-6 lead after one quarter and held
a 33-12 halftime advantage.
Wrestling: With the help of six forfeit wins, Amherst routed Plainfield Tri-County 61-12 last Thursday
at home. The Falcons got pins from Nolan Kayon (140), Randy Ward (145) and Nate Peplinski (152). Scott Hintz (103)
won by major decision and Brandon Wolding (135) won by decision. Adam Bohm (119), Jeff Peskie (125), Brandan Ganoni
(130), Dan Ehr (160), Joe Dambrowski (171) and Ben Ostrowski (189) all won by forfeit.
Almond-Bancroft
Boys basketball: A big first half propelled A-B to a 56-40 win at Port Edwards Tuesday night. The Eagles
(9-4 overall, 9-2 in the CWC small division) outscored the Blackhawks 18-13 in the first quarter and 9-3 in the
second to take a 27-16 lead at the intermission.
Kent Dernbach scored 15 points and was 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Trevor Dernbach chipped in 11.
The Eagles pulled away from Tigerton in the fourth quarter last Friday in a 46-34 home win. A-B led 36-29 entering
the final period and then outscored the Tigers 10-5 in the fourth. Trevor Dernbach scored 12 points and Kent Dernbach
added 10.
Girls basketball: A second quarter surge turned a first quarter deficit into a 30-17 halftime lead in
A-B's 66-38 home win over Port Edwards Tuesday. The Eagles (9-6 overall, 8-4 in the CWC small) outscored the Blackhawks
21-6 in the second quarter after trailing by two entering the period. Stephanie Jenz scored 24 points and Andrea
Cummings added 13. Darlene Turzinski owned the boards with 16 rebounds and Sarah Berry grabbed 11. Courtney Newby
handed out 10 assists.
Free throws cost A-B in a 50-43 road loss to Tigerton last Friday. The Eagles hit only 3-of-17 free throw attempts,
including a 0-for-10 stretch in the third quarter. Jenz led A-B with 15 points while Berry had 11 rebounds.
Rosholt
Boys basketball: The Hornets used a second-quarter surge to get past Tigerton 69-52 Tuesday night at
home. After taking a 16-14 advantage after one quarter, Rosholt outscored the Tigers 25-12 in the second quarter
for a 41-26 halftime lead.
Ryan Zdroik scored 22 points and had 13 rebounds. Luke Lane added 12 while Randy Printz had 11 and Brad Zdroik
10.
Girls basketball: An 18-5 second quarter helped Rosholt run past Tigerton 49-28 on the road Tuesday night.
The Hornets (11-3 overall, 9-2 in CWC small) once again used their defense and held a 28-11 halftime lead. Amy
Scott led Rosholt with 15 points and Tami Scott added 11.
Wrestling: Rosholt finished with a 3-2 record at a six-team dual meet in Marion Saturday. The Hornets
(7-8 overall, 3-4 in CWC small division) beat Three Lakes 36-24, and Wild Rose 36-31. Rosholt lost to Bonduel 47-25,
Princeton 39-27, Marion 39-29.
"We forfeited three weights at every match," Rosholt coach Alan Carter said. "With those three
weights filled, it would have been a different day. The Marion and Princeton meets would have been tighter. Overall,
the wrestlers did a good job and continue to improve."
Finishing 5-0 for Rosholt were Scott Walenski (20-5) at 135 pounds, Aaron Yenter (22-2) at 160, and Jon Betker
(23-1) at 171. Senica Omernik (18-6) was 4-1 at 275 while Dustin Wiza (189) and Shawn Sarenpa (152) both were 3-2.
Omernik's pin at 275 turned the tables on Manawa and gave the Hornets a 39-36 victory last Thursday. Betker
(171) also won by pin and Walenski (135) won by decision. Rosholt was the beneficiary of four forfeit victories
- Casey Giese (103), Terry Fields (112), Bob Omernik (130) and Yenter (160).
