SPASH
Boys basketball: The Panthers remained atop the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a 64-42 win at Antigo
last Friday. SPASH (8-2 overall, 5-1 in WVC) held the Red Robins to 17 first half points and led 27-17 at the break.
The Panthers then outscored Antigo 18-10 in the third to take a commanding 45-27 advantage.
Nick Bennett paced SPASH with 14 points and Josh Hall added 12.
Girls basketball: Janel McCarville scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace SPASH in a 49-32
home win over Antigo last Friday. The Panthers (8-2 overall, 6-1 in the WVC) led 12-8 after one quarter but then
exploded in the second, outscoring the Red Robins 13-3 to take a 25-11 halftime advantage.
Besides McCarville's 21, Steph Karaliunas and Rachel Kreuser each scored eight points.
Gymnastics: Tracy Knippel won the all-around to lead SPASH to a first place finish at the eight-team
La Crosse Central Invitational Saturday. The Panthers scored 134.250 while Holmen took second with 132.450 and
Onalaska was third with 131.625.
"Our team is improving with every meet. Even though the score does not show an increase I see a great deal
of advancement on all events," SPASH coach Mary Olszewski said.
Knippel scored 34.325 points in the four events to take the all-around. She finished first in the bars and the
floor exercise and was sixth in the beam. Nikki Cruz was eighth in all-around, with her highest finish coming in
the beam (fifth). Raenee Bugarske finished 15th in the all-around. Anne Simonis finished fourth in the bars for
the Panthers.
SPASH topped host Marshfield last Thursday in a WVC dual, 136.10-124.05. Katie Meyer won the vault and was second
in the floor exercise. Nikki Cruz finished first in the floor exercise and was second in the balance beam. Tracy
Knippel won the balance beam and finished second in the parallel bars.
Hockey: SPASH scored six goals and topped Marshfield, 6-3, on the road Tuesday night. The Panthers (10-1
overall, 6-1 in the WVC) got two goals from Justin Danielski and single tallies from Joe Richter, Ben Roth, Eric
Anderson and Joe Pavelski. Goalie Shaun Kruzitski made five saves and Eric Everson had one in relief.
A pair of first period goals and single tallies in the second and third periods gave the Panthers a 4-2 win
over Appleton in the opener of the 2nd Annual Community Parks Hockey Classic last Friday.
Josh Kujawa and Josh Pagel each found the back of the net in the first period, giving SPASH a 2-0 lead. Mark
Lutz scored at the 3:20 mark of the second period to give the Panthers a 3-0 advantage. Appleton answered with
a goal just under five minutes later but SPASH's Noah Johnson put the Panthers ahead 4-1 with a goal 30 seconds
into the third period. Kruzitski saved 22 shots for SPASH.
Boys swimming: Corey Prince was the lone Panther to win as SPASH fell in a non-conference dual meet to
La Crosse Logan/Central 100-69 Tuesday. Prince won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.92 seconds. The Panthers got seven
second place finishes.
Wrestling: Visiting Marshfield won the final six matches to top SPASH, 39-18, last Thursday at the SPASH
fieldhouse. The Panthers (2-2 in WVC) led 18-12 after Ty Pope's pin at 140 pounds but that would be the last victory
for SPASH. Panthers Steve Bachinski (103), Tyler Salvinski (119) and Rob King (135) all picked up wins.
Pacelli
Boys basketball: A furious fourth quarter comeback forced overtime, but Marshfield Columbus pulled away
in the extra session to top Pacelli 46-38 Saturday. The Cardinals (3-8 overall, 1-2 in the Central Wisconsin Catholic
Conference) trailed 30-23 going into the fourth quarter and then outscored the Dons 11-4 in the final eight minutes.
Josh Owens tied the game at 34-34 with a 3-pointer with 53 seconds remaining. The game-tying basket was his only
of the afternoon.
In overtime, Columbus outscored Pacelli 12-4. Jim Czlapinski led Pacelli with 12 points while Kurt Kramer added
10.
Owens scored 24 points to lead the Cardinals to a 50-48 home win over La Crosse Aquinas last Thursday. Pacelli
withstood a late Blugold rally in the fourth quarter and hung on by connecting on 4-of-6 free throws. Kramer added
nine points for the Cardinals.
Girls basketball: Pacelli's defense held Adams-Friendship to six first-half points and held on for a
33-29 non-conference win Tuesday night at home. The Cardinals (4-8 overall, 1-2 in the CWCC) had over 30 turnovers
but hit 48 percent of their shots and shut out the Green Devils in the second quarter.
Laura McCorkell led the way with 17 points.
Pacelli's fourth quarter rally came up short Saturday at Wausau Newman, 40-37. The Cardinals trailed 30-21 entering
the final quarter but could only get within three. Pacelli was hurt in the second quarter, as Newman outscored
the Cardinals 13-3.
Lindsey Radomski scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds and McCorkell finished with 12 points, 13 boards
and three blocks.
Wrestling: Six Cardinals won individual titles as Pacelli took top honors at the Pardeeville Invite Saturday
with 183.5 points. Lomira was second with 167.5 and the host school was third with 111.
"We wrestled well from top to bottom today," Pacelli coach Jay Yenter said. "I didn't think we
had a lot of intensity in the practice room this week. But I challenged the kids to prove me wrong and they did
just that. We were better conditioned than everyone we faced today. We won a lot of matches in the third period."
Individually, Tim Schwarz (130), Greg Snow (145), Tim Snow (152), Neil Jurgella (160), John Sniadajewski (189)
and Ben Kissel (275) all won their respective weight classes with 3-0 records. Franz Klein finished second at 112
pounds.
Almond-Bancroft
Boys basketball: The Eagles grabbed a 17-point first half lead and held on in the second half to beat
Plainfield Tri-County, 59-43, Tuesday night. A-B (7-2 overall, 7-1 in the Central Wisconsin Conference small division)
jumped to a 14-2 lead after the first quarter. Kent Dernbach had 19 points to lead the Eagles.
"I was not pleased with our defensive effort. Offensively, I think we were a little lax with the ball,"
A-B coach Curt Lamb said.
The Eagles were hot and Rosholt was not as A-B dropped the Hornets 57-38 last Friday. A-B shot 23-of-44 from
the field (52 percent) while the Hornets only connected on 21 percent of their shots (14-of-68).
The Eagles opened a 27-12 halftime lead after outscoring Rosholt 12-3 in the second quarter. Kent Dernbach scored
18 points for A-B and Trevor Dernbach had 11.
Girls basketball: A big third-quarter spurt gave A-B the lead and the Eagles went on to beat host Plainfield
Tri-County 47-36 Tuesday night. The Eagles (7-5 overall, 6-3 in the CWC small) turned a 22-18 deficit into a 30-26
advantage by outscoring the Penguins 12-4 in the third quarter. A-B then pulled away in the fourth, outscoring
Tri-County 17-10.
Stephanie Jenz had 19 points and nine rebounds. Sarah Berry added nine points while Andrea Cummings chipped
in with seven rebounds.
The Eagles fell at Rosholt last Thursday, 48-28. Jenz led A-B with seven points.
Amherst
Boys basketball: The Falcons exploded after halftime and went on to rout Wautoma, 59-35, Tuesday night
on the road. Amherst (9-0 overall, 5-0 in the CWC large) turned an 18-16 first half lead into a 41-20 advantage
by outscoring the Hornets 23-4 in the third quarter. Dylan Page had another big night, scoring 35 points and grabbing
14 rebounds.
A huge third quarter run turned a 14-point halftime lead into a 33-point advantage as the Falcons routed Menominee
Indian 90-54 last Friday. Amherst outscored the Eagles 28-9 in the third quarter. Page led the way with 32 points
and 11 rebounds while Jesse Konkol had 21 points and nine rebounds. Tony Packer added 12 points.
Girls basketball: Amherst doubled-up on host Menominee Indian last Friday, 66-31. The Falcons broke a
two-game losing streak by exploding in the first half, outscoring the Eagles 42-11.
Meghan Simkins scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Amherst (8-2 overall, 4-2 in the CWC large). Her
sophomore sister, Molly had 10 points and 15 rebounds. Jenni Orsund scored 15 points and had eight assists.
Wrestling: The Falcons grabbed a 42-12 lead and topped visiting Rosholt 42-35 last Thursday. Scott Hintz
(103), Jeff Peskie (130), Nolan Kayon (140), Randy Ward (145) and Dan Ehr (152) each won by pin, while Cody Kanuscak
(112) and Al Bohm (119) won by forfeit.
Rosholt
Boys basketball: A third quarter run helped the Hornets break a two-game losing streak as Rosholt (6-3
overall, 5-2 in CWC small) beat Port Edwards, 64-53 on the road Tuesday night. Ryan Zdroik scored 19 points and
grabbed 11 rebounds while Brad Zdroik added 13 points.
Rosholt suffered from cold shooting and dropped a 57-38 game at Almond-Bancroft last Friday. The Hornets shot
just 21 percent (14-of-68) from the field and the Eagles took control in the first half. Ryan Zdroik led Rosholt
with 23 points.
Girls basketball: The Hornets had a big defensive night again Tuesday, holding Port Edwards to six first
half points as Rosholt (9-2 overall, 7-1 in CWC small) went on to a 58-25 rout at home. Amy Scott had 15 points
and 13 rebounds to pace the Hornets. Jenna Eschenbauch scored 13 points.
Rosholt's defense carried the Hornets to a 48-28 win at home over Almond-Bancroft last Thursday. Rosholt's Amy
Scott scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds and Emily Steines had 12 points.
Wrestling: Three Hornets won individual titles to finish in sixth place with 105.5 points at the Wittenberg-Birnamwood
Charger Invitational last Saturday. Prescott won the team championship with 154 points.
Scott Walenski (135), Aaron Yenter (160) and Jon Betker (171) each won their respective weight classes while
senior Geoff Yenter (125) lost by injury default in the final. Geoff Yenter is lost for the season following a
neck injury. Senica Omernik (275) finished third while Mike Sarenpa (145) was fourth.
The Hornets dropped a close 42-35 match at Amherst last Thursday. Geoff Yenter (125), Walenski (135), Betker
(171), Lee Schulz (189) and Omernik (275) all won by pin while Aaron Yenter (160) won by technical fall.
