SPASH
Boys basketball: The Panthers fell into a first place tie with a 62-55 overtime loss at Rhinelander last
Friday. SPASH rallied in the final quarter and held a 50-48 advantage with over a minute to go, but Rhinelander
sank a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime. The Hodags pulled away in the extra session at the free
throw line. Nick Bennett had 16 points while Josh Hall had 13 and Casey Taggatz chipped in 11.
Girls basketball: Michele Rosicky's outside touch opened up SPASH's offense in a 58-38 WIAA Regional
win at Menasha Tuesday. Rosicky hit five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. The Panthers held a 19-7 lead
after one quarter and had a 28-19 advantage at halftime. SPASH then put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring
the Bluejays 17-7. Janel McCarville controlled the inside, scoring 25 points to pace SPASH.
A strong finish gave the Panthers a 53-32 home win over Rhinelander Saturday. The Panthers outscored the Hodags
29-8 in the second half, including 15-1 in the final period. McCarville scored 18 points to lead Rhinelander.
SPASH led 25-19 at halftime and pulled away in the second half in a 55-40 win at Antigo last Thursday. McCarville
scored 15, Michele Rosicky had 12 and Kara Kujawa added 10.
Gymnastics: The Panthers dominated Merrill last Thursday in SPASH's final tune-up before the WVC meet,
133.35-112.825. Tracy Knippel and Kimberly Jo Barden finished 1-2 in the all-around. The pair tied for the top
spot in the vault. Knippel won the floor exercise, Nikki Cruz captured the balance beam and Katie Meyer finished
first in the uneven bars.
Hockey: The Panthers topped Waupaca 5-3 in the WIAA Regional semifinal Saturday. Adam Kostichka scored
two goals in the first period and had an assist in the second in the win. Noah Johnson, Jake Swenson and Joe Pavelski
lit the lamp in the second and third periods. Shaun Kruzitski had nine saves in net for SPASH.
Boys swimming: Corey Prince finished 18th overall in the 100-yard backstroke in Saturday's Wisconsin
Interscholastic Athletic Association boys swimming state meet. The senior finished in 57.87 seconds, beating his
previous best time of 58.69.
Wrestling: Rob King (135) and Ty Pope (140) both advanced to the WIAA state meet by finishing second
at the WIAA section last Saturday at Appleton North. Wisconsin Rapids' Martin Thunder beat King (27-10) 9-0 in
the 135-pound championship. The senior came from behind and pinned Pulaski's Sam Sparish in 4:22 of the semifinals
to all but ensure his state berth.
Pope lost to New London's Klay Konrad 7-3 in the finals after he shut out Green Bay Preble/East's Ryan Dempsey
6-0 in the semifinals.
Ten Panthers saw their seasons come to an end. Jake Calhoun (103), Nate Kurszewski (112), Tyler Salvinski (119),
Kevin Duda (125), Adam Kurzynski (130), Grey Pope (152), Josh Zinda (160), Jed Haas (171), Josh Beyerl (189) and
Robb Kolodziej (275) didn't finish in the top two.
"Our sectional was really a meat grinder," SPASH coach Gee Pope said. "There really wasn't a
weak weight in the bunch. Every weight had three or four outstanding kids."
Pacelli
Boys basketball: Josh Owens became only the fourth Cardinal to eclipse the 1,000 point mark as Pacelli
routed host Plainfield Tri-County Tuesday, 51-21. The Cardinals moved back to .500 at 10-10 by dominating the first
three quarters. Pacelli held leads of 28-11 at halftime and 42-16 after three quarters. Owens scored 11 points
to pass the milestone. Kurt Kramer led the team with 14 points and Nate Swenson added 10.
The Cardinals stayed within one game of the Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference (6-3) lead by topping Wausau
Newman 56-42 last Thursday. Pacelli's defense did the job in the fourth quarter, holding Newman to only five points
in the final period. Owens led Pacelli with 19 points and Kramer had 16.
Girls basketball: A slow start and rough finish doomed the Pacelli in a 62-36 road loss to La Crosse
Aquinas. The Cardinals were outscored 15-4 in the first quarter and 18-6 in the fourth. Lindsey Radomski led Pacelli
with 14 points.
Amherst
Boys basketball: The Falcons had their way again last Friday, routing visiting Shiocton 65-41. Amherst
led 13-7 after one quarter and then had a 20-8 run in the second quarter to take a 33-15 halftime advantage. The
hosts then put the game away in the third, outscoring the Chiefs 21-12.
"We did a good job of getting the lead, then increasing it or maintaining it. We did not have any letdowns,"
Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said.
Dylan Page led the way with 25 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Eden Weller had 10 points
and Paul Konkol dished out eight assists.
Girls basketball: A fast start by Amherst sent Menominee Indian home packing until next season Tuesday
night, as the Falcons went on to a 74-45 rout. Amherst jumped to a 26-8 lead after one quarter in the WIAA Regional.
Jenni Orsund scored 25 points, had seven steals, five assists and two blocks to lead Amherst. Meghan Simkins also
had a big game with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Jenny Dombrowski added 10 points.
Wrestling: Amherst's two participants at the WIAA sectional, Cody Kanusack (103) and Alan Bohm (112),
didn't finish in the top two and didn't advance to the state meet.
Almond-Bancroft
Boys basketball: The Eagles got behind early and couldn't rally in a 66-58 loss at Necedah. A-B was outscored
18-5 in the first quarter. Matt Cummings had 15 points for the Eagles and Kent Dernbach and Brian Warner each had
11 and Trevor Dernbach scored 10.
Rosholt
Boys basketball: A quick start propelled the Hornets to a 50-40 win at Plainfield Tri-County last Friday.
Rosholt outscored the Penguins 10-5 in the first quarter and then held on for the victory. Ryan Zdroik paced the
Hornets with 16 points. Luke Lane scored 14 points and Kevin Flick added 12.
Girls basketball: Rosholt finished strong in a 42-36 WIAA Regional win over Auburndale Tuesday. The host
Hornets entered the fourth quarter tied at 28-28 but outscored the Apaches 14-8 in the final quarter. Rosholt's
Jenna Eschenbauch scored 15 points and Tami Scott chipped in 12.
Rosholt dominated the second and third quarters and creamed Plainfield Tri-County 66-44 last Friday. The Hornets
doubled up on the Penguins, 40-20, in the two quarters. Amy Scott led the way with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Emily
Steins scored 15 points, Jenna Eschenbauch had 11 and Natasha Check added 10.
Wrestling: Aaron Yenter and Jon Betker both moved onto the WIAA state meet by finishing first at the
Edgar Sectional. Yenter (160) edged Stratford's Will Stuart 8-7 in the final before dominating Jon Baltus of Auburndale
in the semifinal, 10-2. Betker (171) beat Jordan Newmier of Stratford 5-2 in the final and topped Coleman's Jeremy
Gross 6-2 in the semis. Willie VanDeYacht (119), Geoff Yenter (125), Scott Walenski (135), Dustin Wiza (189) and
Senica Omernik (275) all were eliminated from state contention in the first round.
