SPASH

Boys basketball: Dead aim from the free throw line helped the Panthers top Wausau West on the road last Friday, 70-65 in overtime. SPASH (15-3 overall, 12-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference) was a perfect 27-of-27 from the line, including 10 straight in the extra session. Casey Taggatz paced the Panthers with 20 points. Josh Hall scored 15, John Allee had 14 and Nick Bennett added 13.

Girls basketball: SPASH built a five-point lead in the third quarter and held on for a 50-43 home win over Wausau West last Friday. After the two teams played to a 20-20 tie at halftime, the Panthers outscored the Warriors 14-9 in the third quarter. Janel McCarville led SPASH (14-4 overall, 12-2 in the WVC) with 18 points and 20 rebounds while Michele Rosicky added 10 points.

Gymnastics: The Panthers finished fourth overall at the Eau Claire North Invitational Saturday. SPASH tallied 131.875 points, trailing D.C. Everest (134.475), Wisconsin Rapids (134.350) and Rice Lake/Cumberland (133.950).

"Although this was not our best meet as far as our team score goes, I feel this meet was a success for our team," SPASH coach Mary Olszewski said. "For the past two weeks with no competitions we have been working on increasing difficulty and skills. We decided going into the meet that score was not our top priority."

Jenna Weinbauer had the highest finish for SPASH, a third in the beam. Anne Simonis was fourth in the bars, Kimberly Jo Barden took fifth in the beam and Tracy Knippel was sixth in the floor exercise.

Hockey: The Panthers couldn't get the puck past D.C. Everest goalie Dustin Sprowls and SPASH lost for the first time in 14 games, 2-0 on the road Tuesday. SPASH (18-2-0 overall, 14-2-0 in the WVC) outshot the Evergreens 34-15. Everest got on the board in the opening period and then added an empty-net tally with one second left. Shaun Kruzitski made 13 saves for the Panthers.

SPASH won its 13th straight game last Thursday, topping Marshfield 4-1 at home. The Panthers got a hat trick from Eric Anderson. Adam Kostichka scored the team's first goal. Goalie Eric Everson made 13 saves.

Wrestling: Twelve Panthers advanced to sectionals and SPASH finished second with 199 points at the Wisconsin Rapids Division 1 Regional Saturday. The host Red Raiders won the regional with 297.5 points.

No Panthers finished first, but SPASH had seven seconds - Kevin Duda (125), Rob King (135), Ty Pope (140), Grey Pope (152), Jed Haas (171), Josh Beyerl (189) and Robb Kolodziej (275). Jake Calhoun (103) and Adam Kurzynski (130) were third, while Nate Kurszewski (112), Tyler Salvinski (119) and Josh Zinda (160) all finished fourth.

Pacelli

Boys basketball: The Cardinals got within one game of the conference leaders with a 42-38 upset win at Marshfield Columbus Saturday. Pacelli improved to 5-3 in the Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference (8-10 overall), one game behind Columbus and Eau Claire Regis (6-2).

After trailing 11-6 entering the second quarter, Pacelli outscored the Dons 18-5 to take a 24-16 halftime lead. The Cardinals then hung on for the win. Josh Owens and Brandon Flugaur both had 10 points to lead Pacelli.

Girls basketball: A quick start was not enough for Pacelli in a 51-44 loss at Eau Claire Regis Saturday. The Cardinals led 10-4 after one quarter but the Ramblers outscored Pacelli 17-8 in the third quarter to take the lead. Lindsey Radomski paced the Cardinals with 22 points. Laura McCorkell had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

Amherst

Boys basketball: The Falcons dominated Iola-Scandinavia from the start and cruised to a 64-44 win. Amherst jumped to a 26-10 lead after one quarter and held a 43-23 halftime advantage.

"I thought we played well," Amherst coach Gregg Jensen said. "Everybody got a chance to see what they could do."

Dylan Page scored 31 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, blocked seven shots and handed out four assists to lead the Falcons. Eden Weller added 12 points.

Another fast start propelled Amherst to an 84-51 rout at Menominee Indian last Friday. The Falcons led 28-13 after one quarter and continued to roll in the second and third quarters. Page had 35 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. Weller finished with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Jeremy Sherf added 11 points while Paul Konkol had eight assists and three steals. Jason Heinz had eight points and seven rebounds.

"We played a nice game," Jensen said. "We took control early and went on from there."

Girls basketball: Amherst couldn't get on track in the second half and fell 65-47 at home to Iola-Scandinavia. The Falcons (15-4 overall) trailed 30-24 at halftime but were outscored by the Thunderbirds 21-8 in the third quarter. Meghan Simkins scored 17 points while Anne Stanislawski added 12.

Wrestling: Two Falcons moved on to sectionals as Amherst finished fifth with 100.5 points at the Weyauwega-Fremont Division 3 Regional Saturday. Cody Kanusack (103) and Alan Bohm (112) both advanced to Saturday's sectional.

Almond-Bancroft

Boys basketball: The Eagles dropped a 55-50 contest at Rosholt last Thursday. The Hornets turned a 28-27 deficit into a 41-34 lead by outscoring A-B 14-6 in the third quarter. Trevor Dernbach led the Eagles (10-8 overall, 10-5 in CWC small) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kent Dernbach had 13 points.

Girls basketball: A-B made a little surge in the third quarter and turned a one-point halftime deficit into a 41-37 lead entering the fourth quarter. Sarah Berry scored 19 points to lead A-B (12-8).

A slow start doomed A-B in a 55-43 home loss to Rosholt last Friday. The Eagles fell behind 15-4 after the first quarter. Stephanie Jenz had 17 points for A-B while Berry scored 12.

Rosholt

Boys basketball: The Hornets (13-4 overall) improved to 12-2 in the CWC small division and clinched a conference title with a 55-50 win over Almond-Bancroft last Thursday. A 14-6 surge in the third quarter gave Rosholt a 41-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Ryan Zdroik led the way with 21 points and Luke Lane added 17.

Girls basketball: Rosholt came out hot at Almond-Bancroft last Friday and went on to a 55-43 win. The Hornets (16-3 overall, 13-2 in the CWC small division) outscored the Eagles 15-4 in the first quarter and then put the game away in the third quarter. Amy Scott led Rosholt with 20 points.

Wrestling: Six Hornets advanced to sectionals as Rosholt finished second at the Weyauwega-Fremont Division 3 Regional Saturday. Rosholt scored 199 points, just behind W-F's 219.

Willie VanDeYacht (119), Geoff Yenter (125), Aaron Yenter (160), Jon Betker (171) and Senica Omernik (275) all won their weight classes while Scott Walenski (135) and Dustin Wiza (189) finished second.
