SPASH
Boys basketball: A fourth quarter blitz blew open a close game and SPASH went on to beat D.C. Everest
65-50 Tuesday night at home. The Panthers (14-3 overall, 11-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference) led 39-35 entering
the final quarter and promptly put the game away, outscoring the Evergreens 26-15 in the fourth quarter. Nick Bennett
paced SPASH with 19 points, Derek Czaikowski had 12 and Josh Hall had 10.
Marshfield handed SPASH its second Wisconsin Valley Conference loss of the season, 64-53 last Friday in Marshfield.
The Panthers grabbed a 21-13 lead after one quarter only to see the Tigers shut down SPASH's offense for four second-quarter
points. Marshfield doubled up on the Panthers in the third quarter, 24-12, to take a 44-37 lead entering the final
quarter. Bennett led the way for SPASH with 17 points. Starter Ross Adamczak sat out with a sprained ankle.
Girls basketball: Using a second half surge, the Panthers turned a 29-18 halftime deficit into a 52-43
victory Tuesday night at D.C. Everest. SPASH (13-4 overall, 11-2 in the WVC) outscored the Evergreens 18-6 in the
second quarter and 16-8 in the third. Kara Kujawa and Michele Rosicky led SPASH with 14 points apiece. Janel McCarville
added 13.
The Panthers rolled to a 57-38 win last Friday at home over Marshfield. SPASH opened a seven-point first quarter
lead and didn't look back. McCarville scored 24 points and Steph Karaliunas had 11.
Pacelli
Boys basketball: A trio of last-second shots didn't fall and the Cardinals dropped a non-conference road
contest at Portage Tuesday, 44-41. After the teams battled to a 23-23 tie at halftime, the Cardinals (7-10 overall,
4-3 in the Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference) took a 29-26 lead into the final quarter. Josh Owens led the
way with 13 points and Jim Czlapinski had 10.
Owens scored 28 points and led Pacelli to a 60-48 road win over Chippewa Falls McDonell Saturday. The Cardinals
held a 38-32 advantage heading into the final quarter and hit their free throws down the stretch to clinch the
win.
Girls basketball: Turnovers cost the Cardinals in a 51-40 loss to Chippewa Falls McDonell Saturday at
home. The Macks used a pressing defense to open the third quarter and caused 11 Pacelli turnovers and used a 13-0
spurt to take control, 29-20.
Lindsey Radomski led the Cardinals (7-10 overall, 3-4 in the CWCC) with 13 points while Laura McCorkell had
11 and Kim Schulist added 10.
Wrestling: Pacelli tied former conference rival La Crosse Aquinas last Wednesday, 30-30 in a dual meet.
John Sniadajewski (189) and Ben Kissel (275) both got pins to salvage the tie. Also winning by pin were Franz Klein
(112) and Tim Snow (152). Tim Schwarz (130) and Greg Snow (145) won by decision.
"We had our chances to win this one tonight," Pacelli coach Jay Yenter said. "We lost one match
in overtime and two matches by two points. We're at the point in our season where we have to start winning the
close matches."
Amherst
Boys basketball: The Falcons got off to a quick start and downed Marion on the road, 65-50 Tuesday night.
Amherst (16-0 overall, 11-0 in the Central Wisconsin Conference large division) led 23-11 after one quarter and
held a 47-33 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Dylan Page led the way again with 35 points and 13 rebounds. Eden Weller scored 17 points.
A second quarter surge gave Amherst a 38-25 halftime lead as the Falcons topped Bonduel on the road last Friday,
64-50. The Falcons outscored the Bears 22-8 in the second quarter. Page had another big night with 29 points,17
rebounds and four blocks. Weller added 15 points and Paul Konkol had 10 points, six assists and six steals.
"I thought we played well. It was a good win to keep us in the conference lead," Amherst coach Gregg
Jensen said.
Girls basketball: A second quarter run set the tone as Amherst (15-2 overall, 11-2 in the CWC large)
atoned for an early-season loss to Marion Tuesday night, 71-51. The host Falcons, leading 17-16, outscored the
Mustangs 20-11 in the second quarter and then put the game away with a 20-7 run in the fourth quarter. Meghan Simkins
had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jenny Dombrowski added 13 points.
The Falcons trailed 29-22 at halftime but outscored Bonduel 33-10 in the second half to top the Bears 55-39
Tuesday night. Simkins paced Amherst with 11 points and Anne Stanislawski had 10.
Almond-Bancroft
Boys basketball: A-B couldn't rally from a 24-21 halftime deficit and fell 51-46 in a non-conference
game at Green Lake. Trevor Dernbach led the Eagles (10-7 overall) with 12 points and Matt Cummings added 10.
A fast start wasn't enough for the Eagles last Thursday, as Gresham rallied for a 47-45 road win. A-B led 19-6
after one quarter, but the Wildcats battled back and outscored the Eagles in each of the final three quarters.
Kent Dernbach led A-B with 13 while Trevor Dernbach and Blake Schultz each had 10.
Girls basketball: Stephanie Jenz had 13 points to lead a balanced attack in A-B's 50-43 win over Gresham
last Friday. The Eagles outscored the Wildcats 19-13 in the first quarter and then Ellen Riggenbach clinched the
win the fourth quarter.
Rosholt
Boys basketball: Host Tomahawk pulled away in the fourth quarter in a 67-58 Rosholt non-conference loss
Tuesday night. The Hornets (12-4 overall) were deadlocked with the Hatchets, 46-46, entering the fourth quarter
but Tomahawk outscored the visitors 21-12 in the quarter. Ryan Zdroik led the way with 13 points and Brad Zdroik
added 11.
A hot start propelled the Hornets to a 78-56 win over Wild Rose last Thursday at home. Rosholt took an 18-6
lead after one quarter and cruised to the conference win. Bryce Domask paced the Hornets with 18 points, Ryan Zdroik
had 16, Kevin Flick scored 12 and Dane Zdroik chipped in 10.
Girls basketball: Rosholt jumped to a 35-14 halftime lead and cruised to a 59-26 home victory over Adams-Friendship
Tuesday night. The Hornets (15-3 overall) held the Green Devils to single-digit point totals in all four quarters.
Amy Scott led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Emily Steines scored 12 points and Christine Check added
11.
The Hornets had their way with Wild Rose last Friday, trouncing the Wildcats 59-27. Defense was the name of
the game again for Rosholt, which held Wild Rose scoreless in the third quarter. The Hornets led 32-14 at halftime
and 43-14 entering the fourth quarter. Amy Scott had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Rosholt. Tami Scott added
12 points.
