SPASH boys, Amherst girls win conference hoops titles

The Stevens Point Area Senior High boys basketball team is guaranteed at least a share of its second straight Wisconsin Valley Conference title.

A 71-64 home win over Antigo Tuesday night improved SPASH's record to 13-3 in the WVC (16-4 overall) and clinched at least a first place tie with Rhinelander. The Hodags host Wausau East Friday and can tie the Panthers for first with a win.

Nick Bennett scored 23 points and Casey Taggatz had 22 as SPASH pulled away in the third quarter in the victory over the Red Robins.

Amherst

For the third straight year, the Amherst High School girls basketball team is the conference champion. With its 58-42 stomping of Shiocton last Friday, the Falcons improved to 12-2 in the Central Wisconsin Conference large division, clinching a three-peat.

The win over the Chiefs completed a second half sweep of conference opponents. Meghan Simkins had 23 points and 12 rebounds against Shiocton. Jenni Orsund had 15 points and five steals while Anne Stanislawski scored 12 points.
