SPASH hockey clinches WVC title with win over East

Without their head coach and five regulars, the Stevens Point Area Senior High hockey team clinched the Wisconsin Valley Conference

hampionship Tuesday night with a 4-1 home win over Wausau East. The Panthers (13-1-0 WVC, 17-1-0 overall) hold a three-game lead with two to play.

Noah Johnson gave SPASH a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game and Justin Danielski pushed it to 2-0 with a shorthanded tally 13:57 into the second period. The Lumberjacks pulled within a goal less than two minutes into the third period when Eric Freeberg scored.

The Panthers then put the game away with two goals in a 52-second span, the first from Eric Anderson and the second from Jake Pazdernik.

Eric Everson made 19 saves for SPASH while filling in for Shaun Kruzitski. Head coach Jack Stoskopf missed his third straight game with pneumonia.

Wrestling

Ty Pope won the 140-pound bracket to lead the Stevens Point Area Senior High wrestling team to a third place finish with 118 points at the WVC meet Saturday in Marshfield. The third place standing, in addition to the team's 5-3 regular season dual meet record, gave the Panthers a third place finish in the final standings. Perennial power Wisconsin Rapids took the title and Marshfield was second.

Pope came back from a 4-2 deficit in the third period to dump Nick Bord of Wisconsin Rapids 6-4. Jed Haas (171) was the team's only other representative in the finals. Haas was pinned by Antigo's Yan White in 3:12 and settled for second.

Jake Calhoun (103) and Robb Kolodziej (275) finished third while Nate Kurszewski (112), Tyler Salvinski (119), Rob King (135), Grey Pope (152) all took fourth. Kevin Duda (125) was fifth and Adam Kurzynski (130) was sixth.

Boys swimming

Jacob Nantell won two events as SPASH finished third at the WVC swimming meet Saturday in Wausau. The Panthers scored 387 points, behind run-away champion Rhinelander (530.5) and second-place Marshfield (395.5).

Nantell, a sophomore, won the 50-yard freestyle (:23.96) and 100 freestyle (:54.01). Fellow sophomore Jon Ronzani took top honors in the 100 butterfly.

Corey Prince, a senior, was second in the 500 freestyle and the 200 medley relay also finished in the runner-up spot.

Rosholt

The Hornets came home with five individual champions and finished fourth overall at the Central Wisconsin Conference meet Saturday in Marion.
Weyauwega-Fremont won the conference title, followed by Bonduel and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Geoff Yenter (125), Aaron Yenter (160), Jon Betker (171), Dustin Wiza (189) and Senica Omernik (275) all won their respective weight classes. Geoff Yenter pinned W-B's Mike Filtz in 5:10, Aaron Yenter beat Tim Rank of Bonduel 9-2, Betker topped W-B's Brian Waldvogel, Wiza beat Jeremy Bonikowski of Manawa 10-5, and Omernik edged Jeremiah Malueg of Manawa 3-2.

Rosholt's other placewinners were Willie VanDeYacht (119), who finished third, and Terry Field (112), who was fifth.
