Top teams to battle in 28th Sentry Classic

The 28th annual Sentry Holiday Classic will showcase some of the top team and individual talent in Wisconsin high school and collegiate circles at Quandt Fieldhouse on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus Dec. 28-30.

Twelve high school boys and girls teams will compete under the same format used in recent years-pre-determined match-ups. Each team will play two games in three divisions-Boys American, Boys National and Girls.

In addition, the UW-SP men's team, off to an 8-2 start under fourth year coach Jack Bennett, will take on the Eagles of Madison Edgewood College at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29.

Co-sponsored by the Stevens Point Area Community Parks Improvement Committee and Sentry Insurance, the classic has generated about $275,000 for parks-recreation related projects aimed at improving the quality of life in the Stevens Point-Plover area, according to CPIC President Jack Edgerton.

Entered in the Boys American Division are Stevens Point Pacelli, Adams-Friendship, West Salem and Mosinee.

Making up the Boys National field are Stevens Point Area Senior High, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, Seymour and Chippewa Falls.

The four teams in the Girls Division are Pacelli, SPASH, Mosinee and Nekoosa.

The 1999-2000 edition of the Wisconsin Men's Basketball Yearbook has SPASH ranked No. 7 in its Division 1 pre-season poll and projects the Panthers to win the Wisconsin Valley Conference crown.

In Division 2, WMBY ranks Seymour No. 2 and Adams-Friendship No. 3. West Salem is on the publication's honorable mention list. Seymour is projected to win the Bay Conference title while A-F, which was runner-up to champion New London in last year's WIAA Division 2 State Tournament, is picked to earn the South Central Conference crown. West Salem is the pick to win the Coulee Conference title.

In addition, the latest Milwaukee Journal Sentinel top 10 state boys basketball poll has SPASH (5-1) No. 9 in Division 1, Adams-Friendship (5-0), Seymour (3-0) No. 4 and West Salem (2-1) No. 10 in Division 2.

The SPASH girls, off to a strong 5-1 start, are defending champions in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Defending Cloverbelt East Division champion Mosinee (5-0), is ranked No. 1 in Division 2 in the latest Journal Sentinel state poll.

Both Pacelli teams are off to slow starts with the girls at 3-5 and the boys at 1-5.

The boys field will include six players ranked among the state's "Fabulous Fifty" by WMBY.

Two of the players were named to the yearbook's 10-man first team-6-10 Mike Southall of West Salem and 6-7 Kyle Grusczynski of Seymour. Four others were picked to the 10-man fourth team-6-5 Nick Bennett and 5-10 Casey Taggatz of SPASH, 6-0 Josh Owens of Pacelli and 6-3 Dan Zastava of Rapids Lincoln.

Southall and Grusczynski have already made early commitments to NCAA Division 1 basketball programs, the former to the University of Kentucky and the latter to the UW-Madison Badgers, who are led by former UW-Stevens Point coach Dick Bennett.

The classic will also feature the Pointer men who are led by NCAA Division 3 All-American candidate Brant Bailey. The 6-7 senior from Wisconsin Dells, who has poured in 71 points in his last two games, is averaging 22.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game through the team's first 10 outings. He is shooting 54 percent from the field and has made 79 of 106 free throw attempts (.745).

Bailey recently broke a NCAA-3 national record with 31 free throw attempts against UW-La Crosse. In the same game, he set a conference record by converting 25 and tied Mike Hughes' long-standing single game scoring record with 39 points.

The Classic schedule will include four games each on Tuesday and Thursday, starting at 3:30 p.m. and five games on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m. Tickets, priced at $4 per day for adults and $2 per day for students, will be on sale each day in the fieldhouse lobby.

The Warren P. Choudoir Outstanding Player Award will be presented in all three divisions. Other awards in all divisions include the five-player All-Sentry Classic, scoring champion and Mr. and Miss Hustle.
