Plover 14's softball wins Pulaski Invite

The Plover 14's girls fastpitch softball team recently completed its tournament season with a first place finish in the Pulaski Invitational.

Plover opened the tournament with a 4-3 win over Freedom. Trailing most of the game, the 14's struck for four runs in the fifth inning to seal the win. Shannon Collier led Plover with two hits including a two-run single in the fifth. Pitchers Kate Zelhofer and Lindsay Rosicky combined to get the victory.

Plover took on Menasha in its second game and again used a big inning. Meghan Bjork's two-run double sparked a seven-run fourth inning outburst that carried the 14's to a 9-3 win. Bjork, Angie Wroblewski and Sam Polito each had two hits while Zelhofer added a double.

The 14's then ran into a familiar opponent, the Plover 13's. Jenny Maultra's first inning two-run double got the 14's started and they held on for a 7-2 victory. Maultra led the attack with two hits while Rosicky drove in a pair of runs. Steph Fischer came on in relief to pitch two scoreless innings.

In the championship game, Plover had a rematch with Menasha, who fought back through the losers bracket. Defense and pitching were the key as the 14's took the title game 4-0. Fischer, Jackie Kropp, Collier and Zelhofer each had a RBI single. Zelhofer and Rosicky combined to pitch a three-hit shutout.

Other members of the Plover 14's were Becky Fischer and Jenny Carroll. The 14's completed their season with a 20-3 record, won three tournaments and finished second in another.
