Elderon outsted in playoffs
After rallying to beat Hatley in a fourth place tiebreaker a day earlier, Elderon dropped a 15-7 Badger Amateur
Baseball Association playoff game to top-seeded Wittenberg Sunday.
Elderon, who handed Wittenberg its first loss of the season several weeks ago, fell victim to an eight-run Wittenberg
fifth inning and couldn't bounce back.
The underdog had its chances to rally, though. Elderon actually out-hit Wittenberg 13-11, but stranded 14 runners
on base.
Eric Zeinert was the star of the game for Wittenberg, collecting three hits, including a two-run home run and a
two-run double. He also was the winning pitcher.
Elderon's Jay Zeinert helped his team with three hits, including a solo homer in the sixth. He also scored runs
in the seventh and ninth innings. Aaron Dobbe, Jason Zinda and Troy Leiskau each had two hits, and Leiskau hit
a two-run blast for Elderon.
In order to advance to face Wittenberg, Elderon had to rally for four runs in the ninth inning and held on for
a 7-5 victory.
Zeinert had the big hit of the inning, with a two-run single.
James Bembenek, who got the win for Elderon, got himself out of trouble during Hatley's half of the ninth. After
taking a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the inning, Bembenek struck out the first two batters. Then with two outs,
Hatley had three straight hits and scored a run. But with two down and two men on, Bembenek ended Hatley's season
with his 13th strikeout of the game.
Zeinert led Elderon at the plate with three hits. Bembenek pitched the first seven innings and Rick Boda relieved
him in the eighth. But Bembenek reentered and eventually ended the game.
Wittenberg will host Aniwa Sunday in the divisional finals. |
