SPASH

Boys basketball: The Panthers' (4-17, 3-13) season came to a close with their loss to Oshkosh North, 63-44, in a WIAA Regional on Tuesday, March 2. SPASH went on a 17-2 third quarter run to cut Oshkosh's lead down to five entering the fourth, but West out-scored the Panthers 18-5 in the final quarter. Ted Schlafke scored 22 points and knocked down five three-pointers. Will Smith added nine points.

The team lost to Marshfield, 75-49, on Friday, Feb. 27. Schlafke scored 15 points to pace the squad. Wes Sutton chipped in with 11 points.

Hockey: SPASH lost to Wisconsin Rapids, 5-1, in the WIAA Sectional Finals in Appleton on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Panthers were unable to rebound from a 3-0 first period deficit, and finished the season with a 17-5-1 record. Blake Porter scored the team's lone goal of the game with 3:11 remaining in the contest.

Wrestling: Senior Jon Slezak finished fifth at 140 pounds at the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament, which was held Thursday, Feb. 26, to Saturday, Feb. 28. Slezak opened with a 3-2 win over Bret Radunzel of Janesville Craig, but lost to eventual state champion Ben Chapman of Plymouth, 3-2, in Chapman's closest match of the tournament. Slezak defeated Kyle Haines of Tomah, 13-4, and then Mike Thompson of Germantown, 11-4, to advance to the fifth place match. He beat Tom Cruetz of Wilmot Union, 3-2, to capture fifth place and finish the season with a 32-4 record. Sophomore Kyle Roth went 1-2 at 103 pounds, while senior Matt Wanta finished 1-2 at heavyweight. Roth lost to Tyler Pope of Milwaukee Pius XI, 15-2, then beat Ben Albrecht of Marshfield, 4-3, in wrestlebacks. He was eliminated after being pinned by Wade Lorenz of LaCrosse Logan, and finished with a 35-5 record on the season. Wanta beat Alex Gibson of Milton, 7-4, but was pinned by Gilbert Chavez of Baraboo in the second round. Wanta dropped a 2-1 decision to Gustav Witte of West Bend West in wrestlebacks, and ended the season with a 32-7 record.

Gymnastics: The Panthers recorded their highest score of the season Saturday in the WIAA Sectional at Wisconsin Rapids, but the team failed to qualify by one-half point for the state meet this weekend. Sheboygan and Manitowoc were the two qualifiers.

However, Kaity Munsey qualified in all four events, which take the top five finishers, and the all-around, where the top three go on to state. Munsey was the sectional all-around champion with a score of 36.675. She also tied for first on the beam with a 9.325, took second on vault and bars and finished third on floor. She had 9s in all four events.

"I am really proud of the girls," said Panther coach Jill Suchowski. "They stepped it up today and gave it their all."

Jen Grubba had her highest beam, floor and vault scores of the season, and Morgan Rugg received her first 8 score on bars.

"The rest of the girls hit solid routines, which really shows the depth of our team," Suchowski said.

SPASH had finished the meet with a 137.6.

Pacelli

Boys basketball: The Cardinals (7-14, 4-12) beat Marion, 64-54, in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 2. Jake Owens scored 25 points and had eight steals to lead the way. Jim Sadlemyer scored 19 points and Scott Herzog pitched in with nine. The Cards will face Princeton in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 4.

The team lost to Weyauwega-Fremont, 71-60, on Friday, Feb. 27. Jim Sadlemyer led the way with 18 points, while Jake Owens added 15. Scott Herzog and Bryon Shannon each chipped in with 10 points. Weyauwega clinched the CWC large championship with the victory.

Girls basketball: Pacelli (17-6) beat Marion, 55-45, in a WIAA Division 4 regional match-up on Saturday, Feb. 28. Stephanie Fischer poured in 36 points to lead the team.

The team beat Oshkosh Lourdes, 55-19, in a WIAA Division 4 regional match up on Thursday, Feb. 26. Stephanie Fischer paved the way with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Ashley Fruin added eight points and Kaitlyn King had eight rebounds.

Amherst

Boys basketball: The Falcons' (14-7, 10-6) season came to a close, as they lost to Iola-Scandinavia, 63-61 in overtime, in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 2. Chris Page totaled 34 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Amherst attack, and Spencer Selbo chipped in with 10 points. Iola's Luke Gunderson came up with a steal and scored the game-winning lay-up with 1.5 seconds left in overtime.

The team beat Tri-County, 66-55, on Friday, Feb. 27. Page had 19 points and Scott Morgan contributed 15. Selbo added 10 points.

Wrestling: Junior Mo Malone finished second at 112 at the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament, which was held Thursday, Feb. 26, to Saturday, Feb. 28. Malone opened with a 9-2 win over Tyler Leroy of Somerset, followed by a pin of Cameron Smit of Laconia. He then defeated Aaron Kersten of Boyceville, 1-0, to advance to the State Championship match. In the finals he fell 9-1 to Chris Klister of Wrightstown. Malone finished the season with a record of 43-4.

Rosholt

Boys basketball: The Hornets (18-3, 12-3) beat Wild Rose, 53-46, in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 2. Matt Zdroik scored 18 points and Adam Macht had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Rosholt will host Wausau Newman in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 4.

The team beat Bonduel, 52-44, on Friday, Feb. 27. Zdroik led the team with 23 points. Macht pulled down 11 rebounds and Travis Richter added 10 boards.

Girls basketball: Rosholt (13-9) lost to Wausau Newman, 35-30, in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal on Thursday, Feb. 27. Sara Omernik had six points and 10 rebounds to lead the girls, while Tracy Wierzba had 18 rebounds. The Hornets' season ended with a 13-9 record.

Wrestling: Devin Groshek finished sixth at 160 at the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament, which was held Thursday, Feb. 26, to Saturday, Feb. 28. He opened with a pin of Luke Narvaez of Phillips, but lost to Jason Morey, the eventual state champion, 10-1, in the second round. Groshek won his first match in wrestlebacks, beating Johnny Jensen of Elcho, 9-7, before dropping a 7-5 decision to Dustin Skaya of Stratford in the fifth place match. Groshek finished the season with a record of 37-5.

Almond-Bancroft

Boys basketball: The Eagles (18-4, 15-3) hammered Northland Lutheran, 67-25, in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 2. Randy Berry had 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Austin Lamb tossed in 16 points. Ben Dill added 10 points. Almond will host Oshkosh Lourdes in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 4.

The team beat Wild Rose, 74-60, on Friday, Feb. 27. Berry had 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead the way. Lamb and Greg Otto chipped in with 10 points each. The win gave Almond a share of its second consecutive CWC small title.
