SPASH

Boys basketball: The Panthers (3-9, 2-6) lost to Wausau East, 68-45, on Friday, Jan. 16. Ted Schlafke led the team with 17 points and Wes Sutton chipped in with 10.

Girls basketball: SPASH (4-6, 4-4) beat Wausau East, 49-34, on Friday, Jan. 16. Allison Smaglik had 15 points to lead the way. Sara Eckerman and Jaycie Fritsch added seven points apiece.

Hockey: The Panthers (11-2-1, 9-0-1) beat Marshfield, 4-2, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Ted Baier scored a pair of goals and Travis Erstad had three assists to pave the way. Derek Schroth and Michael Soik also scored, and Nick Krygowski stopped 22 shots.

The team beat Antigo, 1-0, on Thursday, Jan. 15. Jimmy Haluska scored with three seconds left in the game to pull out the win for SPASH. Krygowski stopped 21 shots in goal to earn the shutout. Blake Porter and Nate Alm assisted on Haluska's game-winner.

Wrestling: The Panthers beat Rhinelander, 45-30, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Derek Onstad (125) won 7-6, and Kyle Roth (103), Aaron Nelson (112), Brandon Raikowski (119), Jon Slezak (140), Tim Peterson (152), Tate Roselius (160) and Matt Wanta (Hwt) all won by forfeit.

The team beat Antigo, 37-35, on Thursday, Jan. 15. Wanta (Hwt) won, 9-6, in the final match of night to give SPASH the dual meet victory. Roth (103), Raikowski (119), Onstad (125) and Peterson (152) won by pin, while Nelson (112) and Slezak (140) won by major decision.

Boys swimming: SPASH placed fifth at the Manitowoc Invitational, with 247 points, on Saturday, Jan. 17. Josh Siebert won the 50 yard freestyle and was a member of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, along with Evan Prince, Phillip Potter and Aaron Tetzloff, which set new meet and pool records. Potter finished second in the 100 and 200 freestyles, while Prince was third in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and Tetzloff finished third in the 100 butterfly.

The team lost to Wausau East/West, 89-81, on Thursday, Jan. 15. Potter set a pool record with his win in the 200 freestyle, and also won the 100 free and was a member of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, along with Siebert, Prince and Tetzloff. Prince was also a dual winner, taking the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Siebert won the 50 free, Tetzloff was victorious in the 100 butterfly and Thomas Serafin won the 100 backstroke.

Gymnastics: The Panthers defeated Antigo, 132.3-122.25, on Thursday, Jan. 15.

Kaity Munsey took first in all events, floor exercise, balance beam, uneven bars, vault and all-around. Jen Grubba was second in beam and all-around, as well as tied for third with Jaime Rugg in the floor exercise, fourth in the uneven bars and sixth in the vault.

Rugg was also second in the vault and fourth in all-around. Kendra Konopacky took second in the floor exercise, third in uneven bars and all-around and fourth in beam and vault.

"We had an off night," said SPASH coach Jill Suchowski. "Falls on beam and bars cost us some points, but we came back with good routines on floor and vault. Kendra Konopacky had a great night on floor with her highest score, Kaity hit good routines on vault and bars, Jaime had a solid floor routine, and Jen continues to be strong on the beam."

SPASH captured the Evergreen Invitational at D.C. Everest High School in Schofield on Saturday, Jan. 17, with 136.95, edging Rhinelander, which had 135.575, and Wisconsin Rapids, which had 133.45.

Three points separated the top three teams going into the final event, and the Panther gymnasts responded with a 35.05 score, their highest of the season, to win. The Panthers were first in the balance beam and vault.

Munsey led SPASH with firsts in the floor exercise, vault, uneven bars and all-around and a fifth in the balance beam. Konopacky was third in vault, and ninth in floor. Grubba was fifth in uneven bars and all-around and eighth in floor exercise. Rugg was fifth in vault, 10th in floor and all-around and 12th in balance.

"We had an amazing meet," Suchowski said. "The depth of our team really shown through today. We still need improvement on bars, but we're getting there. Our team score continues to improve. Kaity hit on all four events today. She won three individual events and all-around. Jaime had her highest beam score ever and Jen finally broke a 9.0 on the beam. Kendra had solid floor and beam routines and her vault was very strong."

The Panthers edged Rhinelander, 136-135.35, on Tuesday, Jan. 20, pulling out the victory in the end. After three events, SPASH had a 1.9 point lead, winning the floor, beam and vault events. But Rhinelander closed the margin to 0.65 point.
Munsey led the way with firsts in the floor exercise, balance beam, uneven bars and all-around. She was second in the vault.

The only other second came from Jen Grubba in the all-around. Taking fourths were Jaime Rugg in floor exercise, Grubba in balance beam and Kendra Konopacky in vault.

Fifths went to Grubba in uneven bars, Rachel Von Holt in vault, Konopacky in floor exercise and Rugg in all-around. Sixths went to Grubba in floor exercise and Rugg in uneven bars.

"We had a good meet," said Suchowski. "We struggled on the beam again and need to clean it up and stay consistent. Kaity had another consistent meet with 9s in all four events. The girls have come a long way since our 129 team total in the first meet. I am very proud of how well they are coming along."

Pacelli

Boys basketball: Pacelli (5-7, 3-5) lost to Weyauwega-Fremont, 73-62, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Jim Sadlemyer had 24 points to lead the team. Jake Owens chipped in with 15 and Scott Herzog added 11. Weyauwega's Bryce Welch torched the Cards with 42 points and 15 rebounds.

Girls basketball: The Cardinals (8-4, 5-4) beat Weyauwega-Fremont, 50-39, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Stephanie Fischer scored 16 points, while Kaitlyn Lane added 14 and Beth Boden had 11.

The team beat Bonduel, 68-58, on Thursday, Jan. 15. Fischer had 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cards. Kaitlyn Lane chipped in with 14 points and five steals.

Wrestling: Pacelli finished 1-3 at a CWC multi-meet in Rosholt, on Saturday, Jan. 17. The Cards lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood (46-33) and Weyauwega-Fremont (64-9), before beating Amherst (48-33). They dropped their final match of the day to Manawa, 51-30. T.J. Hayes (103), Jamie Klein (130), Brian Napiwocki (145) and Joe Groshek (Hwt) all finished with 3-1 records on the day. Weyauwega-Fremont won the event with a 4-0 record.

Amherst

Boys basketball: The Falcons (8-4, 4-4) beat Tri-County, 59-45, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Chris Page scored 22 points to lead the offense. Spencer Selbo had 14 points and James Stokes added 12.

The team beat Menominee Indian, 56-45, on Friday, Jan. 16. Page had 24 points to power the team in a key CWC large matchup.

Girls basketball: Amherst (9-4, 7-2) beat Tri-County, 34-24, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Kelly Stolpa scored 10 points, and Margo Borgen added seven points and seven rebounds.

The team handled Menominee Indian, 68-32, on Friday, Jan. 16. Teresa Green had 12 points and eight rebounds and Steph Pederson added 11 points and nine rebounds for the squad. Stolpa chipped in with 11 points and Jessica Doll had 10.

Wrestling: The team finished 0-4 at a CWC multi-meet in Rosholt, on Saturday, Jan. 17. The team dropped dual meets to Weyauwega-Fremont (64-16), Rosholt (48-25), Pacelli (48-33) and Wittenberg-Birnamwood (54-22). Individually, Mo Malone (112), Brandon Sopa (119) and Bert Soyka (152) all finished 4-0 on the day. Weyauwega-Fremont won the event with a 4-0 record.

Rosholt

Boys basketball: The Hornets (11-1, 7-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Bonduel, 57-52 in overtime, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Adam Macht was the team's leading scorer with 14 points. Travis Richter added 11 and Matt Zdroik had 10. Bonduel's Derek Blum hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

The team beat Manawa, 73-61, on Friday, Jan. 16. Matt Zdroik knocked down five 3-pointers to finish with 30 points for Rosholt. Travis Richter added 15 points and Adam Macht chipped in with 14.

Girls basketball: Rosholt (8-5, 5-4) lost to Bonduel, 60-54 in overtime, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Tracy Wierzba had 13 points and Jamie Scott contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Renee Wierzba also added 12 points.

The team beat Manawa, 76-52, on Friday, Jan. 16. Brittany Yenter tossed in 18 points to lead the way.

Wrestling: The Hornets finished 1-3 at a CWC multi-meet in Rosholt on Saturday, Jan. 17. They lost to Manawa (45-27) in their opening match, but followed with a win over Amherst (48-25). The team dropped its final two matches of the day, losing to Wittenberg-Birnamwood (51-28) and Weyauwega-Fremont (51-18). Devin Groshek (160) and Dean Zakrzewski (215) each finished 4-0 on the day, while Andy Osowski (119) went 3-1. Weyauwega-Fremont won the event with a 4-0 record.

Almond-Bancroft

Boys basketball: The Eagles (8-3, 7-2) lost to Wild Rose, 66-64, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Randy Berry had a monster night with 38 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win. Ben Dill chipped in with 11 points.

The team beat Marion, 68-46, on Friday, Jan. 16. Berry had a double-double with 29 points and 16 rebounds to help Almond rally for the win. The Eagles out-scored Marion 31-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Austin Lamb tossed in 16 points.

Girls basketball: Almond (5-6, 5-3) beat Wild Rose, 29-26, on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Shelly Pagel led the team with 11 points and Danielle Yonke added 10, as the duo accounted for 21 of the team's 29 points.

The team lost to Marion, 66-51, on Friday, Jan. 16. Dani Turzinski finished with 15 points and Danielle Yonke chipped in with 13. Jennifer Warzynski added 10 points, but it was not enough to stop Marion, which sits atop the CWC small standings with an 8-0 record.
