Local athletes excel in Sentry Classic

Players from schools in Portage County captured a number of individual honors at the 32nd annual Sentry Classic at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's (UW-SP) Quandt Fieldhouse from Sunday through Tuesday, Dec. 28-30.

Stephanie Fischer of Stevens Point Pacelli High School captured the Most Valuable Player award in the American Division of the Girls Tournament.

Kaitlyn Lane of Pacelli was named to the All-Tournament Team and Ally Rutta of Pacelli won the Hustle Award.

Dani Turzynski of Almond-Bancroft High School was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Others named to the All-Tournament Team were Amy Klein and Jackie Shea, both of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, and Shae Flood of Elcho. Klein also won the Scoring Award.

Allison Smaglik and Sarah Petersen, both of Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH), were named to the All-Tournament Team in the National Division of the Girls Tournament.

Kati Harty of Ashwaubenon was named the MVP in the National Division and the All Tournament Team also included Kim Wypiszynski of Ashwaubenon, Samantha Bellanti of Slinger and Chelsea Rosenow of Chippewa Falls. Wypiszynski also won the Scoring Award and Ashley Wagner of Slinger won the Hustle Award.

Jake Owens of Pacelli was named to the All Tournament Team and won the Scoring Award in the American Division of the Boys Tournament.

B.J. Vetterkind of Mondovi was named the MVP of the division and Tyler Moy of Mondovi won the Hustle Award.

Other members of the All-Tournament Team were Brad Smith of Mondovi, Jay Steuber of Park Falls, Nick Schmidt of Park Falls and Corey Clarke of Burlington Catholic Central.

Ted Schlafke and Wes Sutton of SPASH were named to the All-Tournament Team of the National Division, along with Steve Klass of Seymour, Trevor Stratton of Wisconsin Rapids and James Poehls of Green Bay Southwest.

Kevin Grusczynski of Seymour was named the MVP and also won the Scoring Award. Bobby Kuchta of Seymour won the Hustle Award.
