Men's basketball (15-3 overall, 6-3 WIAC):
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) got back on the winning track, picking up three wins during the
week against UW-Oshkosh, Viterbo and UW-Stout.
The Pointers grabbed a 68-53 win over UW-Oshkosh to snap its first two-game regular
season losing streak in over two years. Jason Kalsow scored 24 points in the win, and Eric Maus added a career-high
13 points in the victory. The Pointers led 27-20 at halftime and maintained at least a five-point lead throughout
the second half.
UW-SP defeated Viterbo, 67-52 on Monday, leading the entire game for its 10th straight
win over Viterbo. Nick Bennett of Stevens Point led the way with 22 points, Kalsow added 21 and Brian Bauer of
Auburndale had 10.
The Pointers trailed, 36-34, at halftime but came back to defeat UW-Stout, 84-70,
on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The Pointers shot 59.1 percent from the field in the first half, missed the first shot of
the second half and then made 10 straight. Bennett tied his career high with 29 points, Kalsow added 20, Maus had
a career-high 14 and Neal Krajnik chipped in 10.
Saturday's game with UW-La Crosse at 5 p.m. will be the Pointers' third annual
Youth Day. Children ages 13 and under will receive paid admission when accompanied by a paying adult. Kids in attendance
before 4:30 p.m. can enter their names in a drawing to sit on the team bench during the game.
Women's basketball (16-2 overall, 7-2 WIAC): The
Pointers dropped a heartbreaker to UW-Oshkosh, 75-74, in overtime last week and began the second half of their
conference season by defeating UW-Stout on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 72-66.
UW-SP held a three-point lead in the final seconds last week before the Titans
hit a three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime. UW-Oshkosh outscored the Pointers 5-4 in
the extra period and held off a final shot attempt at the buzzer in the matchup between conference co-leaders.
Amanda Nechuta of Mosinee had 18 points to lead the Pointers, who had just eight
turnovers in the loss. Andrea Kraemer added 15 points and Tara Schmitt had 13 points. UW-SP entered the game ranked
sixth in the NCAA Division III and UW-Oshkosh was ranked 23rd.
Against UW-Stout, Nechuta led the Pointers with 18 points, Kraemer added 15, Amy
Scott of Rosholt had 12 and Schmitt had 10.
The Pointers are now one game behind the Titans in the loss column in the WIAC
standings with a 7-2 conference record.
Men's hockey (11-6-2 overall, 4-3-1 NCHA): The Pointers split a pair of games over the weekend to remain in a tie for third place
in the NCHA standings. UW-SP beat seventh-ranked Lake Forest, 3-2, on Friday before falling to second-ranked St.
Norbert, 9-0, on Saturday. The Pointers will face both teams again this weekend on the road.
UW-SP built a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the game against Lake Forest as Justin
Micek, Ryan Kirchhoff and Jordan Blair all recorded goals. Ryan Scott of Plover held off the Foresters with 29
saves, including 12 in the third period.
The Pointers fell behind St. Norbert 3-0 after two periods on Saturday before allowing
six third period goals in their biggest shutout loss since 1985.
UW-SP has nine points in the NCHA standings and is tied for third place with UW-Superior.
Women's hockey (11-4-4 overall, 7-2-1 NCHA):
UW-SP posted a 4-2 win and a 1-1 tie in a weekend series with UW-River Falls to hold onto second place in the NCHA
standings. One Wednesday, Jan. 28, UW-SP defeated St. Catherine, 15-1.
The Pointers got a goal from Jackie Schmitt just 11 seconds into Friday's game
and another from Ann Ninnemann just four minutes later for an early 2-0 lead. Jennifer Norris added two more goals
to provide the winning margin and Amy Statz made 16 saves in goal.
On Saturday, Hilary Bulger gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead in the first period, but
the Falcons scored a second period goal to even the game and give the Pointers their fourth tie of the season.
The Pointers now have 15 points in the NCHA standings and trail UW-Superior, which
has 18 points. UW-SP plays two games at Lake Forest over the weekend.
Swimming (Men and Women both 3-0 in WIAC duals): Four individuals and four relays won titles as the Pointer men's team earned the team title
in the Get to the Point Invitational.
The Pointers had 841 team points to edge second place UW-La Crosse, which had 799.5.
UW-La Crosse won the women's competition with 851 points, while UW-SP was second with 745 points.
Alex Anderson won two events for the men's team, taking the 200 breaststroke in
2:09.09 and the 100 breaststroke in 58.54 seconds. He also swam on all four winning relays. Matt Grunwald captured
the 200 butterfly in 1:57.37 and Garth Newport won the 100 butterfly in 51.91.
On Friday, UW-SP won the men's 200 freestyle relay in 1:25.83 and the 400 medley
relay in 3:33.27. On Saturday, the Pointers claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:36.65 and the 400 freestyle relay
in 3:10.03. Tyler Eloranta, Matt Sievers and Aaron Marshall each swam on three winning relays.
Jennie Roskopf was the lone individual winner for the Pointer women's team, winning
the 100 breaststroke by three-hundreths of a second in 1:09.77. The women's relay of Alissa Bartz, Jacci Menzel
of Stevens Point, Lindsay Correll and Jerica Crook also won the 200 medley relay in 1:50.87.
The Pointers will host conference rival UW-La Crosse in a dual meet on Friday at
6 p.m.
Track and field: The Pointer
women had five individual champions and needed every point in claiming a season-opening victory at the UW-Whitewater
indoor invitational on Saturday.
The Pointers totaled 119 points to nip second place Illinois Wesleyan by just one
point in the nine-team event. The men's team had two champions and finished second behind UW-Whitewater in the
11-team competition.
UW-SP had four of the top five finishers in the women's 3000-meter run as Ashleigh
Potuznik won the event in 10:43.88. Leah Herlache won the one-mile run in 5:12.3 and Jenna Mitchler took the 800-meter
run in 2:18.38. Stephanie Renk captured the high jump in five feet, 2.25 inches and Julia Slabosheski won the shot
put in 43 feet, 2.5 inches.
For the men's team, Andy Bednarek won the 3000-meter run in 8:47.95 and Curt Johnson
claimed the 5000-meter run in 14:55.02.
The Pointers will host their first home invitational of the year on Saturday at
10:30 a.m. at the Multi-Activity Center.
Wrestling (5-1 overall, 3-0 WIAC): UW-SP
improved to 3-0 in conference dual matches with a 29-12 victory on Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.
Yan White and David Davila both had pins for the Pointers in the win. UW-SP trailed
12-7 before winning the final five matches.
Joel Burdick and Tyler Wozniak both added major decision wins for the Pointers,
who are ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division III rankings.
UW-SP will take on UW-Parkside, which is ranked 17th in the NCAA Division II, in
a dual on Wednesday. The Pointers host UW-Whitewater, which is ranked 23rd in Division III, on Saturday. The match
will be alumni day at UW-SP as all Pointer wrestling alumni are invited back for the match and a postmatch social.
