Pointer notes
Men's basketball (12-3 overall, 4-3 WIAC): The
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers dropped two close games last week and fell one game out of first
place.
UW-SP lost to UW-Whitewater, 71-69, on Wednesday and then fell 57-54 at UW-Superior
on Saturday. After an 11-0 start, the Pointers have lost three of their last four games by a total of eight points.
Jason Kalsow had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists against UW-Whitewater,
but the Warhawks hit two free throws with 2.7 seconds left for the victory to snap the Pointers' 22-game regular
season home winning streak. Nick Bennett of Stevens Point added 13 points and Eric Maus had 10 points.
Kalsow had 18 points and 12 rebounds in a tightly-contested game at UW-Superior
that saw neither team lead by more than three points in the final 16 minutes until the Yellowjackets took a four-point
lead with 14 seconds left. Tamaris Relerford added 11 points in the loss.
Women's basketball (15-1 overall, 6-1 WIAC): UW-SP
picked up two wins last week.
The Pointers have won three straight games and entered the week tied with UW-Oshkosh
and UW-Eau Claire atop the WIAC standings with 6-1 records.
UW-SP thumped UW-Whitewater 76-40 on Tuesday and then beat UW-Superior 74-61 on
Saturday to run its record to 15-1 overall.
Tara Schmitt led four players in double figures against UW-Whitewater with 16 points
and Amanda Nechuta of Mosinee had 12 points to become the 12th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
The Pointers led 42-16 at halftime and forced 32 turnovers in the victory.
Amy Scott of Rosholt had 20 points as all five starters scored in double figures
against UW-Superior. Schmitt added 16 points and a career-high seven steals, while Andrea Kraemer had 13 points
and five assists.
Men's hockey (10-5-2 overall, 3-2-1 NCHA): UW-SP
fell out of first place in the NCHA standings with a 1-1 tie against St. Scholastica and a 5-1 loss to UW-Superior
over the weekend.
The Pointers have a pair of big games coming up this week, hosting fourth-ranked
Lake Forest on Friday and second-ranked St. Norbert on Saturday at Willett Arena.
Chris Gehrke gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead early in the second period against St.
Scholastica on Friday, but the Saints tied the game with 15:19 left to snap a 12-game losing streak in the series.
Ted Eastman made 18 saves as the Pointers outshot the Saints 36-19.
The Pointers fell behind 2-0 to UW-Superior before Justin Micek scored a second
period goal, but the Yellowjackets added three more goals for the victory. UW-Superior scored three power play
goals in the win.
Women's hockey (9-4-3 overall, 6-2 NCHA):
UW-SP suffered two losses to UW-Superior over the weekend and has a big weekend coming up when it hosts defending
NCHA champion UW-River Falls for a two-game series.
The losses were the first conference defeats for the Pointers, who are now one
game behind UW-Superior in the NCHA standings.
UW-SP played over 47 minutes of the weekend series with an empty net, including
35:34 of Saturday's game after falling behind 4-1 in the first period. The Pointers scored five of their six goals
with an extra attacker and allowed three empty net goals in the two games. UW-SP had a 51-16 advantage in shots
on Saturday, including 22-0 in the third period.
Jackie Foley was the top offensive player for the Pointers with a goal and three
assists in the two games. Emily Teachout had a goal and an assist in the series.
Swimming (Men and Women both 3-0 in WIAC duals): The Pointers get back to action this week by hosting the annual Get to the Point Invite.
Competition begins with prelims at 9 a.m. each day. Finals will begin on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday at
3:30 p.m. The meet features several of the top Division II and III schools from throughout the Midwest.
Track and field: The Pointers
open their indoor season this weekend by taking part in the UW-Whitewater Invitational. UW-SP hosted its annual
alumni meet last weekend and competes in its first home indoor meet on Jan. 31.
Wrestling (4-1 overall, 2-0 WIAC):
UW-SP picked up a dual meet win on Friday in Westby over Concordia (Wis.) 32-6, winning eight of the 10 weight
classes.
Cody Koenig recorded the lone pin of the match with a fall in 3:49 at 174 pounds
for his 12th straight win to improve to 19-1 for the season.
Brady Holtz had a 15-0 technical fall at 133 pounds, while David Davila at 125
pounds, Ed Wynimko at 165 pounds and Mike Hayes at heavyweight all won by major decision.
The Pointers get back to conference action this weekend with a dual meet at UW-Oshkosh
on Saturday night. UW-SP leads the WIAC with a 2-0 record.
