Pointer notes Men's basketball (11-1 overall, 3-1 WIAC): The 11-game winning streak for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) Pointers came to an end Tuesday, Jan. 7, as the Pointers dropped a 63-60 decision to UW-Platteville. The Pointers had improved to 11-0 with a pair of victories last week and hit the road for two conference games during the upcoming week. UW-SP beat Edgewood 72-54 on Wednesday and then defeated UW-Eau Claire, 70-58, at home on Saturday to run its record to 11-0 overall. The Pointers are ranked second in the NCAA Division III and have won their first 11 games for the fifth time in school history, including the second straight year. Nick Bennett of Stevens Point had 22 points against Edgewood as the Pointers scored the first 11 points of the game and held at least a 10-point lead the rest of the way. Jason Kalsow had 17 points and 12 rebounds to help the Pointers win their 35th consecutive regular season non-conference game. Kalsow had 19 points in the win over UW-Eau Claire, while Bennett and Eric Maus
each added 11 points. The Pointers took an early 18-9 lead and led by at least nine points the remainder of the
game. It was the Pointers' fifth straight win over the Blugolds. The Pointers trailed 39-29 at the half, but retook the lead at 49-47 with 10:29 left, before missing their next 11 shots as Platteville went on a 14-0 run. Andrea Kraemer led the Pointers with 20 points, Amanda Nechuta of Mosinee had 15 and Tara Schmitt had 10. It had been a big week for the Pointers, who won four games to match their best start in school history at 12-0. UW-SP won three games in San Diego to capture the Surf N'Slam Classic and then topped defending WIAC champion UW-Eau Claire, 57-55, on Saturday. In San Diego, the Pointers beat Rutgers-Camden (N.J.), 89-48, Thomas More (Ky.), 91-61 and host Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.), 75-59, to win the tournament. Schmitt was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player by hitting 15 of her 21 shots in the three games and posting 19 points in the title game. Nechuta was also named to the all-tournament squad after scoring 22 points against Thomas More and posting 19 points and 16 rebounds against Point Loma. Amy Scott of Rosholt scored 17 points to lead the third-ranked Pointers in the win over 10th-ranked UW-Eau Claire. Nechuta added 16 points and had the game-winning basket with 2:38 left as the Pointers scored the last six points of the game. UW-SP matched the 1976-77 team for the best start in school history. Rochester (N.Y.) and New York University were the only other NCAA Division III
schools with undefeated men's and women's basketball teams. Both schools' teams are 8-0 overall. The Pointers are ranked fourth in the country and are 8-1-1 overall, having posted
four consecutive shutouts. The dual features 11 nationally ranked wrestlers in the 10 weight classes. UW-SP
has four nationally ranked competitors and Wartburg has seven. The Pointers are currently 3-0 in dual meets. |
