Men's basketball (9-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC): The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point captured the Las Vegas tournament championship with a pair of victories on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 21 and 22, including a 63-55 triumph over UW-Oshkosh in the title game.

UW-SP opened with a 70-52 win over Kalamazoo as Nick Bennett of Stevens Point tied a career high with 29 points and Jason Kalsow added 16 points. The Pointers closed the first half with a 10-0 run to lead, 38-24, at halftime and then held the double-digit lead throughout the second half.

On Monday, the Pointers were tied with UW-Oshkosh at halftime and then tied again with 13 minutes left before taking the lead for good. Kalsow scored 21 points and Bennett added 13 points as the Pointers and Titans met in a non-conference game for the first time since 1929-30. It was the 179th meeting between the schools and first played outside of Wisconsin.

UW-Oshkosh closed to within four points with 2:55 left before Bennett scored four straight points. Brian Bauer of Auburndale hit back-to-back three-pointers to help the Pointers take control down the stretch.

UW-Stevens Point is 9-0 and ranked second in the country. The Pointers return to action with a non-conference game at Edgewood on Dec. 31.

Women's basketball (11-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC): The Pointers won the Surf N'Slam Classic in San Diego, Calif., on Tuesday, Dec. 30, with a 75-59 decision over Point Loma Nazarene (PLN) of California.
The win marked the first time that UW-SP started the season 11-0 since 1976.

The game was tied five times in the first half, and PLN led 31-29 with 2:44 left in the half when the Pointers scored the final nine points of the half.

UW-SP held a 59-51 lead with 5:18 left and held PLN without a field goal during a 13-2 run over the next three minutes. Amanda Nechuta of Mosinee and Tara Schmitt led the Pointers with 19 points each, and Amy Scott of Rosholt added 18.

The Pointers advanced to the championship game with an 89-48 victory over Rutgers-Camden on Sunday, Dec. 28, and a 91-61 win over Thomas Moore of Kentucky on Monday, Dec. 29.

The victory over Rutgers-Camden was UW-SP's sixth win by 34 points or more this season. The Pointers opened with a 10-2 lead and never trailed, leading by at least 20 points all of the second half and by as many as 45 points.

Schmitt led the way with 15 points, followed by Andrea Kraemer with 14, Nechuta with 11 and Nathalie Lechault and Scott with 10.

Thomas Moore scored the game's first point, and the Pointers came back with nine straight, holding that lead the rest of the game as UW-SP chalked up its fourth 90-point game this season.

Nechuta led the Pointers with 22 points, followed by Schmitt with 18, Kraemer with 16 and Cassandra Heuer with 13, including three three-pointers in the Pointers' first four possessions in the second half.
