SPASH
Boys basketball: The Panthers (4-14,
3-11) beat Merrill, 51-49, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Kris Riggs' lay-in with four seconds capped the come-from-behind
win. SPASH outscored Merrill 14-2 over the final 2:30 of the game to pull out the victory. Ted Schlafke scored
27 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Wes Sutton had 13 points, Jake Gotta had nine assists and Alex
Check pulled down nine rebounds.
The team lost to D.C. Everest, 65-62 in overtime, on Friday, Feb. 13. Schlafke
hit seven three-pointers, scoring 25 points to lead the team. Will Smith added 10 points and Sutton had nine.
Girls basketball: SPASH (7-12, 7-8)
Merrill, 48-43, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Allison Smaglik scored 15 points, 11 of which came in the third quarter. The
Panthers went on a 20-3 run, which spanned parts of the second and third quarters, to gain control of the game.
Katie Maultra added nine points.
The team lost to D.C. Everest, 49-36, on Friday, Feb. 13. Smaglik scored 13 points
to pace the team.
Gymnastics: The Panthers won all
four events against Marshfield Thursday, Feb. 12, winning 136.3-117.1. Kaity Munsey led the way, taking a first
in all four events, plus the all-around. She won the uneven bars, the beam and the floor exercise and tied for
first in the vault with Jaime Rugg and Kendra Konopacky, all with scores of 8.750.
Jen Grubba took second in bars, beam and all-around, tied for second in vault and
took third in floor exercise. Rugg added a second in floor and fourths in bars, beam and all-around. Konopacky
was third in bars, beam and all-around and fourth in floor. Rachel Von Holdt also finished third in vault.
"I was very happy with the meet," said SPASH coach Jill Suchowski. "We
were in a bit of a rut over the past couple of weeks and it was great to see the girls fire up, have fun and perform
well.
"Kaity had a little trouble with her floor routine right off the bat but recovered
well on the next three events," Suchowski said. Jaime had a good day on beam, floor and vault. We still need
to work on her floor. Jen had very strong beam and floor routines. Kendra had a great vault and stuck her beam
routine."
The Panthers dropped a 139.825-134.825 decision to Eau Claire Memorial on Monday,
Feb. 16. Munsey took firsts in bars, floor and all-around and a third in vault, the only SPASH gymnast to score
in the top three. She has the highest score in the state on beam and the second highest in floor exercise.
"Once again we were off on beam," said Suchowski. "We came back
strong with floor and vault. The girls are focused on conference and sectionals and weren't mentally here. We are
still adding and perfecting new skills, so practices the remainder of the week will be critical to our performance
on Saturday.
In the beam, the Panthers had six falls while Eau Claire had none.
Boys swimming: SPASH finished seventh,
with 194 points, at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional at Hudson on Saturday, Feb. 14. Phillip Potter qualified for
the State Meet with second-place finishes in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyles. Josh Siebert finished second
in the 50-yard freestyle to qualify for state, and Evan Prince advanced with a third-place finish in the 100-yard
freestyle. Potter, Siebert and Prince also teamed up with Aaron Tetzloff to qualify in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle
relays with second-place finishes in each event. Eau Claire Memorial won the Sectional with 386 points.
Wrestling: SPASH finished fourth
at the WIAA Division 1 Regional at Hortonville on Saturday, Feb. 14. Kyle Roth (103), Brandon Raikowski (112),
Jon Slezak (140), Nate Groshek (215) and Matt Wanta (Hwt) all won regional titles to advance to Sectionals. The
Panthers finished with 117.5 points.
Pacelli
Boys basketball: The
Cardinals (6-13, 4-11) lost to Manawa, 66-55, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Jake Owens poured in 27 points, but Pacelli
shot only 5-of-23 from three-point range. Jim Sadlemyer added 12 points.
The team lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 54-51, on Friday, Feb. 13. Owens scored
26 points, while Sadlemyer chipped in with nine.
Girls basketball: Pacelli (13-6,
10-5) beat Manawa, 64-41, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Kaitlyn Lane scored 17 points, as the Cards led 59-24 heading into
the fourth quarter. Stephanie Fischer and Ally Rutta scored 10 points each.
The team lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 54-49, on Friday, Feb. 13. Kaitlyn Lane
had 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to lead the Cards. Rutta added 11 points and Ashley Fruin tossed in
10. Wittenberg (16-2, 13-1) clinched the CWC large title with the win.
Wrestling: The Cardinals finished
sixth, with 119 points, at the WIAA Division 3 Regional at Omro on Saturday, Feb. 14. Jamie Klein won the 130-pound
title, and Brian Napiwocki captured the crown at 140. Ben Klosinski (189) also will advance to Sectionals after
his second-place finish. Amherst won the team title with 149.5 points.
Amherst
Boys basketball:
The Falcons (12-6, 8-6) lost to Weyauwega-Fremont, 62-45, on Friday, Feb. 13. Chris Page scored 22 of the team's
45 points in the loss.
Girls basketball: Amherst (10-9,
8-7) lost to Weyauwega-Fremont, 74-60, on Friday, Feb. 13. Brittany Dick scored 17 points and hauled in six rebounds,
while Teresa Green added 14 points and six boards. Margo Borgen chipped in with 11 points.
Wrestling: The team's season ended
on Tuesday, Feb. 17, when they were defeated by Stratford, 63-13, in a WIAA Division 3 Sectional Semifinal. Jim
Blanke (135) won by pin, while Mo Malone (112) won 6-0 and Brandon Sopa (119) won 10-2. The Falcons won three of
the seven matches that were wrestled, but forfeited the other six weight classes.
Amherst won the WIAA Division 3 Omro Regional with 149.5 points, on Saturday, Feb.
14. Malone was the regional champ at 112, while Bert Soyka took home the title at 152. Sopa (119), Blanke (135)
and Mike Stremkowski (171) all finished second in respective weight classes to qualify for individual sectionals.
Rosholt
Boys basketball:
The Hornets (15-3, 11-3) lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 61-51, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Adam Macht paced the team with
12 points, and Matt Zdroik added 11. Rosholt was out-scored 24-14 in the fourth quarter, which proved to be the
difference in the game.
Girls basketball: Rosholt (11-8,
8-7) lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 68-35, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Megan O'Neil scored 10 points, but the team was
unable to overcome 40 turnovers.
Wrestling: Rosholt finished fifth,
with 120.5 points, at the WIAA Division 3 Regional at Omro, on Saturday, Feb. 14. Devin Groshek (160), Donny Carter
(171) and Dean Zakrzewski (heavyweight) all took home regional titles in their respective weight classes. Matt
Zander (152) and Dustin Groshek finished second in their weight classes and will join the trio at sectionals.
Almond-Bancroft
Boys basketball:
The Eagles beat Montello, 62-36, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Junior Randy Berry scored his 1,000-career point, as he had
27 on the night to lead the team. Austin Lamb added 13 points.
The team took care of Gresham, 75-50, on Friday, Feb. 13. Berry took control, scoring
31 points to lead the team. Lamb and Eric Gendusa each tossed in 12 points.
Girls basketball: Almond (9-10,
9-7) lost to Tigerton, 48-18, on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Shelly Pagel scored eight points for the Eagles.
The team lost to Northland Lutheran, 50-41, on Monday, Feb. 16. Pagel led the team
with 13 points, while Dani Turzinski pitched in with 12. Almond will meet up with Northland again in the first
round of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs.
