POINT BOCK RUN SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, MARCH 6: The Point Bock Run returns to the streets of Stevens Point and surrounding area on Saturday, March 6, with the race starting at noon.

The five-mile course starts and ends at the Stevens Point Brewery, 2617 Water St., Stevens Point.

Additional information and registration forms can be found in the gift shop at the Stevens Point Brewery, Arbuckles Eatery or on the Web at www.pointbockrun.com.

The Point Bock Run started in the 1970s but was dropped in the early 1990s before being revived in 2003. The run celebrates the unveiling of Point Spring Bock.

SPSA REGISTRATION PACKETS AVAILABLE: Registration packets for the Stevens Point Softball Association's summer softball and volleyball leagues at Zenoff Park are now available.

Packets may be picked up at the Stevens Point Park and Recreation Department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Recreation Department is located at 2442 Sims Ave. (behind P.J. Jacobs Junior High School). Registration forms may also be obtained by visiting the softball association's Web site at www.stevenspointsoftball.com.

The team registration date is set for Saturday, March 20, at the Zenoff Park Office building. For more information please contact Brian Giese at 295-0875, Randy Wievel at 344-6846, Mike Disher at 341-6856 or the Zenoff Park Office at 341-2804.

The Stevens Point Softball Association is a nonprofit corporation that serves adult and youth recreation in the Stevens Point area. This marks the 30th year of operation for the association. All profits from its operations are dedicated to park improvements and support of local area organizations.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM WITH ROSHOLT MEMBERS TAKES THIRD: The Wisconsin Extreme 16 Elite Team, including Amber Kuklinski and Susie Trzebiatowski from Rosholt, took third in the 14th annual President Festival volleyball tournament in Mahtomedi, Minn., on Sunday, Feb. 15.

The tournament included 80 teams in the 16-age bracket, and the 16 Elite Team finished first in its pool on Saturday, Feb. 14, moving the team into a tougher pool play on Sunday.

The team won all its games on Sunday to take first place in the play pool, then moved into the final four. The team then captured a third-place medal finish. "It doesn't get any better than this, the girls played awesome," said coach Taryn Vaughn of Hatley.

The team players besides Kuklinski and Trzebiatowski included Kallie Schindler and Emily Kunze from Abbotsford, Emily Zupon from Antigo, April Weiler and Amber Weiler and Megan Prestebak from Colby, Holli Yessa from Edgar and Stephanie Meckley from Marshfield.

UW-SP ALUMNI PLAN RECEPTION IN ARIZONA TO SEE BUCKS: Snowbirds and spring vacationers may take advantage of a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) alumni event in Phoenix, Ariz., Saturday, March 20, when the Milwaukee Bucks play the Phoenix Suns.

UW-SP alumni and friends are invited to attend a pre-game reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. before attending the 7 p.m. game at the America West Arena. Participants will watch UW-SP alumnus Terry Porter as he coaches the Bucks.

The reception will be held at Alice Cooper's Town, 101 E. Jackson St., within walking distance from the arena. Attendees will enjoy a BBQ sandwich buffet and the opportunity to socialize with Pointer alumni and friends.

Cost of the game and reception is $35 per person; game only is $23. The group rate includes the ticket, a visor or T-shirt, group name on the Jumbotron and adjacent seating.

Checks are payable to the UW-SP Alumni Association, 2100 Main St., Room 208, Stevens Point, WI 54481. Tickets are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Deadline for ordering is Friday, March 5.

POINTER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: UW-SP has announced the players of the week for the teams during the week ending Feb. 23.

Men's basketball: Eric Maus recorded his first career double-double with a 14-point, 10-rebound performance in the Pointers' victory at UW-Oshkosh. He was six-for-nine from the floor and played 38 minutes. On Saturday, he scored 12 points and added eight rebounds in the Pointers loss to UW-Superior.

Women's basketball: Amanda Nechuta of Mosinee set a new career-high in points by scoring 36 in the Pointers victory at WIAC leader UW-Oshkosh. Nechuta was 13-for-18 from the field, and 10-for-15 from the free throw line. She scored 19 of her 36 points after halftime. On Saturday, Nechuta scored the first nine points of the second half and finished with 18 as the Pointers clinched the WIAC championship.

Men's hockey: James Jernberg scored a pair of goals to cap the Pointers' comeback from a 3-0 deficit in Friday's game at UW-Superior. Jernberg's heroics helped the Pointers to a series victory over the third-seeded Yellowjackets.

Women's hockey: Tracy Truckey put the Pointers ahead to stay with a thrilling third-period goal against UW-Superior on Friday night. She broke a 1-1 tie with her breakaway goal and Jackie Schmitt added an insurance goal less than a minute later. Truckey finished the regular season with nine goals and 10 assists.

Men's track events: Andrew Schliepp eclipsed an NCAA provisional qualifying standards at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday. Schliepp won the 55 meter hurdles in 7.68 seconds in both the preliminary and the final. He also participated on the second-place 4 x 400 meter relay which provisionally qualified for the NCAAs with a time of 3:21.42.

Women's track events: Isabelle Delannay took a big step toward preparing for the WIAC Championships, by winning the 1,500 meters at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. Delannay established a new personal record, leading the field with a time of 4:45.65.

Amy Frey recorded several jumps which exceeded her previous personal best, and won the triple jump at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. Frey covered 10.88 meters on her winning jump to edge teammate Jill Tucker for first place.
