SPASH
Football:
The Panthers (8-1, 7-1) beat Wausau East, 28-10, on Friday, Oct. 17. Matt Armatoski rushed for 108 yards and one
touchdown on 17 carries, and Wes Sutton added 87 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries to lead the offense. Ted
Schlafke scored on a one-yard touchdown run and also threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Troy Reilly.
Volleyball: SPASH (5-11) lost to
Rhinelander, 9-15, 11-15, 4-15, on Thursday, Oct. 16.
Boys soccer: The Panthers (9-12-3,
4-4) lost to Rhinelander, 3-2, on Thursday, Oct. 16. Eric Buda and Ling Vang scored goals for SPASH, but they were
unable to overcome a hat trick by Rhinelander's Alex Hoffman.
Girls tennis: SPASH's four participants
in the WIAA Individual State Tournament were eliminated on Friday, Oct. 17, the second day of competition. Lindsey
Arnold (24-3) lost to Haley Bortz of DSHA, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round, and Ali O'Neal (28-2) lost to Katie Potts
of DSHA, the top ranked player in the state, 6-0, 6-1. Meanwhile the doubles team of Rachel Benn and Maria Davis
lost to Shelly Wenzel and Marissa Ambrosius of Brookfield Central, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Panthers return to action
in the WIAA State Team Tournament, starting on Friday, Oct. 24.
Arnold advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Colleen Cross of Nicolet in the first
round on Thursday, Oct. 17, while O'Neal advanced when her opponent was forced to withdraw due to injury. Davis
and Benn won their opening match, 6-2, 6-3, over Emily Bouche and Emily Kessenich of Sauk Prarie.
Cross country: Both the boys and
girls teams won Valley Conference titles on Saturday, Oct. 18. The boys finished with 35 points as they won their
16th consecutive conference title. Luke Langhorst placed second to pace the team, as Tom Winkelman (sixth), Mickey
Katz (seventh), Paul Zdroik (eighth) and Harrison Smith (12th) weren't far behind. For the girls, Emma Tauchman
(second), Kara Tauchman (third), Jenny Groshek (fourth), Zoe Browne (fifth) and Kelly Shaw (sixth) were outstanding,
as the girls cruised to the title by scoring 20 points.
Girls swimming: The Panthers dropped
a 114-56 decision to Wausau East on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
Lauren Golla took first in the backstroke and Danielle Alinea took first in the
breaststroke. Seconds went to Golla in the 200 individual medley; Melissa Degen in the 500 freestyle; the 200 medley
relay team of Golla, Alinea, Stacy Smrz and Brittany Forrest; and the 200 freestyle relay team of Forrest, Amy
Bachinski, Golla and Alinea.
Taking third places were Forrest in the 50 freestyle; Smrz in the 100 butterfly;
Maddy Etrheim in the 100 breaststroke; the 200 medley B relay team of Bachinski, Etrheim, Taryn Willkom and Sara
Eckerman; and the 400 freestyle relay team of Kelly Williamson, Leah Watson, Smrz and Etrheim.
Fourths went to Williamson in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Etrheim in the 200 individual
medley, Bachinski in the 50 freestyle and Alinea in the 100 freestyle. Taking fifths were Degen in the 200 freestyle,
Willkom in the 100 butterfly, Bachinski in the 100 freestyle, Jenna Van Haren in the 100 backstroke and Watson
in the 500 freestyle.
The team finished 12th out of 16 teams at the Homestead Invite, on Saturday, Oct.
18. The Panthers scored 66 points and were led by the 200-medley team (Lauren Golla, Sharissa Hillstead, Danielle
Alinea and Brittany Forrest), which placed fifth overall. Alinea took home a 10th place finish in the 100 breaststroke,
while Hilstead finished 13th in the same event.
Pacelli
Football:
The Cardinals (5-3, 4-3) beat Manawa, 16-12, on Friday, Oct. 17. Brian Mannebach intercepted three passes and recovered
a fumble as the Pacelli defense forced a total of seven turnovers. Eddie Krzmarzick had 142 yards rushing and one
touchdown on 34 carries, while Scott Herzog had 96 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries. Alex Riordan added a
28-yard field goal to cap the scoring.
Volleyball: Pacelli beat Port Edwards,
13-15, 15-8, 15-7, 5-15, 15-6, in WIAA Regional Quarterfinal match-up, on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Kaitlyn Lane had 13
kills and Sara Klasinski had 41 assists. Kari Heagle and Krissy Lila had nine kills and five aces apiece.
The team beat Tri-County, 15-12, 15-5, 7-17, on Thursday, Oct. 16. Klasinski had
20 assists, while Kaitlyn Lane had seven kills. Arin Lane added four kills.
Cross country: The girls finished
fourth and the boys finished eighth at the CWC Conference meet on Thursday, Oct. 16. Katie Fix (10th) and Chrissy
Nowak (11th) earned Second Team All-Conference Honors, while Nikki Theisen (18th) and Jane Kruel (19th) were Honorable
Mention All-Conference and Beth Boden finished 48th. On the boys side, Jamie Klein finished third overall to earn
First Team All-Conference Honors, while Ryan Koch (30th), Ian Allen (40th), Paul Monday (41st) and Oliver Klein
(43rd) rounded out the squad.
Amherst
Football:
The Falcons (3-5, 2-5) lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 41-0, on Friday, Oct. 17. Brad Koback rushed for 36 yards
on 12 carries and also caught three passes for 29 yards to lead the offense.
Volleyball: Amherst's (5-11) season
ended with a loss to Rosholt, 5-15, 7-15, 15-13, 5-15, in a WIAA Regional quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday, Oct.
21. Caitlin Allen had six service points, 13 assists and three kills, while Jennifer Glodowski added 11 service
points and five kills. Margo Borgen had nine kills and Colby Mehne had six service points and nine assists.
The team lost to Bonduel, 13-15, 15-2, 15-6, on Thursday, Oct. 16. Mehne had four
service points, eight assists and four kills. Allen added three service points and 12 assists, while Borgen racked
up 10 kills.
Cross country: The boys and girls
each finished second at the CWC Conference meet on Thursday, Oct. 16. Spencer Selbo (10th), Devin Arch (12th) and
Jeremiah Osborn (14th) each earned Second Team All-Conference honors, while Andy Werner (15th) was Honorable Mention
All-Conference. Elliott Abbott (23rd) helped secure the team's strong finish. For the girls, Aryn Higgins (sixth)
and Brittany Dick (seventh) each landed First Team All-Conference Honors, while Laura Kropidlowski (20th) was Honorable
Mention All-Conference. Christy Cloninger (33rd) and Kristine Fox (34th) rounded out the squad.
Rosholt
Football:
The Hornets (1-8, 1-7) lost to Bonduel, 28-0, on Friday, Oct. 17. Devan Groshek had 58 yards rushing on 11 carries
and Travis Richter added 57 yards on 15 carries.
Volleyball: Rosholt beat Amherst,
15-5, 15-7, 13-15, 15-5, in a WIAA Regional quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Mallory Chaudoir had 20
service points, 17 assists and two aces to lead the way. Sue Trzebiatowski had 11 kills and 10 digs, and Amber
Kuklinski added nine kills and seven digs.
The team beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 13-15, 15-5, 15-7, on Thursday, Oct. 16. Trzebiatowski had 12 service points,
11 kills and three aces, while Angie Bricko added nine service points and three aces. Brittany Yenter had eight
kills and Chaudoir added 12 assists.
Cross country: The girls finished
third and the boys finished sixth at the CWC Conference meet on Thursday, Oct. 16. Janice Yenter finished second
overall to garner First Team All-Conference honors for the girls while Tracy Wierzba (17th) earned honorable mention.
Sara Omernik (22nd), Jessica Kulas (23rd), Jamie Scott (32nd) and Katie Kluck (38th) rounded out the girls team.
On the boys side, Andy Osowski (18th) earned honorable mention, while Luke Vosz (22nd), Kris Domask (31st), Joey
Scott (33rd) and Eric Furmanek (35th) rounded out the boys team.
Almond-Bancroft
Football:
The Eagles (3-5, 2-4) lost to Iola-Scandinavia, 57-14, on Friday, Oct. 17. Austin Lamb scored on touchdown passes
of five yards and 64 yards from Randy Berry, but Almond was able to muster little else offensively, as running
back Jason Sanchez was held to 18 yards on 13 carries.
Volleyball: Almond's (5-12) season
ended with a loss to Iola-Scandinavia, 4-15, 9-15, 3-15, in a WIAA Regional quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday, Oct.
21. Shelly Pagel had five kills and Amy Zielinski chipped in with four kills to lead the team.
The team beat Bowler, 15-8, 15-6, 8-15, on Thursday, Oct. 16. Dani Turzinski had
six digs, three kills and seven assists to lead the way. Shelly Pagel added seven kills and Lindsey Pionek handed
out seven assists.
Cross country: The boys and girls
teams each finished seventh at the CWC Conference meet on Thursday, Oct. 16. For the boys, Ryan Stephens finished
fourth overall to earn First Team All-Conference Honors, while Nathan Wahn (11th) was named Second Team All-Conference.
Alex Engel (42nd), Aaron Johnson (46th) and Keith Nelson (49th) rounded out the team. For the girls, Allie Jagielo
finished 12th to garner Second Team All-Conference Honors, while Rachel Wydra (24th), Jamie Dorhorst (35th), Felicia
Dake (37th) and Nichole Knights (55th) rounded out the team
