SPASH
Boys basketball: The Panthers (1-5,
1-3) lost to Wisconsin Rapids, 65-48, on Friday, Dec. 12. Ted Schlafke had 17 points to lead the team in scoring.
Wes Sutton added 13 points.
Girls basketball: The Panthers went
scoreless in the last 3:12 after tying the score against. Wisconsin Rapids and dropped a 48-41 decision on Friday,
Dec. 12.
Allison Smaglik and Sarah Petersen led the way for SPASH, each scoring 14 points.
Allison Reineck added five and Katie Maultra and Sara Eckerman each had four to close out the scoring.
Wisconsin Rapids led 21-19 at the half and led by as many as eight points in the
third quarter before the Panthers cut their deficit to 36-31 at the start of the final quarter. After Smaglik scored
the first points of the final quarter for the Panthers with 4:36 left, SPASH caught fire and tied the score 41-41
on another Smaglik basket following a turnover.
"We exerted a lot of energy to come back," said Kraig Terpstra, SPASH
coach. "We just couldn't get over the hill. We needed that one more shot.
"I was pleased the way the kids fought back but then there were periods of
time we didn't shoot too well. We relied on the jump shot way too much, and they played a gimmick defense to keep
us away from the basket." The Panthers are now 3-3 for the season and 3-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
Hockey: The Panthers (5-1-1, 4-0-1)
beat Marshfield, 3-1, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Brandon Busse, Michael Soik and Noah Kruzitski had goals on the evening.
Nick Krygowski and Isaac Zurawski combined to stop 17 shots in goal for SPASH. Lucas Suchon, Ted Baier, Travis
Erstad and Blake Porter each had an assist.
The team lost to Northland Pines, 3-0, on Friday, Dec. 12. Krygowski had 34 saves
in goal.
The squad beat Wausau West, 4-2, on Thursday, Dec. 11. Ted Baier scored two goals
and Michael Soik added a pair of assists. Tom DeWitt and Wade Trzebiatowski also scored goals, while Krygowski
stopped 15 shots.
Boys swimming: SPASH lost to Rhinelander,
88-78, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Josh Siebert won the 50-meter freestyle and the 100 freestyle, and also teamed up with
Evan Prince, Phillip Potter and Aaron Tetzloff to win the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Prince took home a first
place finish in the 200 free, as did Tetzloff in the 100 butterfly and Potter in the 500 free.
Wrestling:
The Panthers lost to Marshfield, 45-21, on Thursday, Dec. 11. Josh Pascavis (189) and Matt Wanta (Hwt) won by pin,
while Kyle Roth (103) won 4-0, Derek Onstad (125) won 4-2 and Jon Slezak (145) won 6-3.
Gymnastics: SPASH finished second
at the Oconomowoc Invitational, on Saturday, Dec. 13. Kaity Munsey finished second in the all-around competition
after winning the beam and vault, finishing second in the floor exercise and fifth in the uneven bars. Jen Gruba
finished sixth in the all-around competition after placing seventh in both the beam and the bars and finishing
11th in the vault.
Pacelli
Boys basketball:
A free throw by Bryon Shannon with 1.8 seconds left gave the Cardinals a come-from-behind 61-60 victory over Tri-County
on Friday, Dec. 12.
Tri-County jumped out to an 18-11 first quarter lead and increased it to 32-23
at the half. The Cardinals trailed, 49-40, going into the final quarter when they caught fire, outscoring Tri-County
21-11.
Jake Owens led Pacelli with 22 points and Brian Mannebach added 16. The Cardinals
are now 3-2 on the season and 1-2 in the Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division.
Girls basketball: Pacelli (3-2)
beat Marshfield Columbus, 45-32, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Kaitlyn Lane scored 10 points to lead the team, while Stephanie
Fischer added nine.
The girls beat Tri-County, 54-32, on Friday, Dec. 12. Lane scored 26 points and
Kaitlyn King contributed 13 in the win.
Wrestling: The Cardinals dropped
a 54-21 decision to Rosholt Thursday, Dec. 11.
Winning by pins were T.J. Hayes at 103 pounds and Jamie Klein at 130 pounds. Brian
Napiwocki won the only decision of the evening, 11-5, at 145 pounds against Dustin Groshek. Nick Retski also picked
up points at 112 pounds when Rosholt forfeited.
Amherst
Boys basketball:
Amherst (3-2, 2-2) beat Manawa, 63-39, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Chris Page had 32 points, and James Stokes added 10.
The team lost Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 54-52, on Friday, Dec. 12. Jason Schweitzer
scored 15 points, but it wasn't enough as the Chargers scored a basket in the closing seconds to pull off the win.
Spencer Selbo added 12 points and Page had 11.
Girls basketball: The Falcons (5-1,
3-1) beat Manawa, 61-31, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Kelly Stolpa had 14 points and five rebounds, and Margo Borgen and
Christy Cloninger had five steals each.
Rosholt
Boys basketball: Rosholt
(5-0, 3-0) beat Tri-County, 55-46, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Matt Zdroik poured in 25 points to lead the team. Travis
Richter added 17 points.
The team beat Menominee Indian, 51-47, on Friday, Dec. 12, as Zdroik scored 20
points. Adam Macht added 12 and Jimmy Kizewski had 10.
Girls basketball: The Hornets (5-3,
3-2) beat Tri-County, 37-20, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Sara Omernik was the leading scorer for the team with nine points.
Brittany Yenter and Jamie Scott chipped in six points apiece.
The girls beat Menominee Indian, 55-37, on Friday, Dec. 12.
Wrestling: Rosholt defeated Pacelli,
54-21, on Thursday, Dec. 11. The Hornets won eight matches with pins, and Matt Zander won the 152-pound bout by
forfeit.
Winning by pins were Andy Osowski at 125, Jaime Yenter at 135, Tom Dally at 140,
Tony Ganoni at 160, Jarrod Lepak at 171, Devin Groshek at 189, Donnie Carter at 215 and Dean Zakrzewski at 275.
"I was very happy with the boys' performances," said Rosholt coach Alan
Carter. "They were very aggressive. I was very happy about the pins, that's what you want to see. The boys
took advantage of opportunities. We beat some good wrestlers. Some of our younger wrestlers, even in their losing
efforts, did well. They had opportunities."
Carter said Jaredt Simonis at 103 pounds "is showing some promise." Ganoni
wrestled out of his weight class, and "he showed good aggressiveness," Carter said. "It was a big
win for us. Hopefully, we can use this to boost our confidence as we get into the thick of things."
Almond-Bancroft
Boys basketball: Almond
(4-0, 3-0) beat Port Edwards, 75-54, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Randy Berry had 32 points, 21 rebounds and five assists
to lead the way. Austin Lamb also had a big game with 26 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
The team beat Bowler, 73-32, on Friday, Dec. 12. Berry had 20 points and 12 rebounds
and Lamb added 18 points. Greg Otto had two points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Girls basketball: The Eagles (4-1,
4-0) beat Port Edwards, 40-36, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Dani Turzinski had 12 points and Shelly Pagel scored 10 to
pace the team.
The girls beat Bowler, 40-36, on Friday, Dec. 12. Turzinski had 15 points and Danielle
Yonke scored 14 to lead Almond's come-from-behind victory. The Eagles trailed 24-8 at halftime, but out-scored
Bowler 32-12 in the second half to pull off the win.
