Pointer notes
Men's basketball (7-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC):
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) beat UW-Stout, 73-64,
last week to improve to 7-0 overall for the fourth straight year and run its record to 2-0 in league play with
wins over two of the top four teams in the preseason WIAC poll.
The Pointers are ranked second in the NCAA Division III and travel to Las Vegas
this weekend for a tournament. UW-SP plays Kalamazoo on Sunday and then meets either UW-Oshkosh or State University
of New York Institute of Technology on Sunday. The games will be played at the McDermott Center on the Nevada-Las
Vegas campus and will be broadcast on 97.9 FM WSPT.
Jason Kalsow scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win over UW-Stout.
Nick Bennett of Stevens Point added 16 points and Neal Krajnik had 14 points. The Pointers jumped out to leads
of 10-1 and 18-5 and never trailed. They led 43-23 at halftime and were 11-for-23 from three-point range.
Women's basketball (8-0 overall, 2-0
WIAC): The Pointers picked up two more victories last week to improve
to 8-0 overall. UW-SP is one of four Division III schools to have undefeated men's and women's teams along with
Rochester (N.Y.), St. John Fisher (N.Y.) and Trinity (Texas).
UW-SP is ranked fourth in the nation and posted a 76-75 win at UW-Stout on Wednesday
for its first win in Menomonie since 1989. The Pointers followed that victory with a 100-65 win over Carroll on
Saturday.
Amy Scott of Rosholt and Cassandra Schultz both had career-highs in the win at
UW-Stout as Scott had 27 points and Schultz scored 19 points, including two free throws with 46 seconds left to
break a 73-73 tie. Cassandra Heuer added 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Schultz had another career high on Saturday with 20 points at Carroll. Andrea Kraemer
had 20 points and a career-high 10 assists as the Pointers scored 100 points for the fourth time in school history.
UW-SP is off until Dec. 27 when it takes part in a tournament in San Diego.
Men's hockey (9-4-1 overall, 3-1 NCHA): The Pointers swept 15th-ranked UW-Eau Claire over
the weekend to bring a 9-4-1 record into the holiday break. UW-SP won 4-2 on Friday in Eau Claire before posting
a 5-3 win on Saturday in Stevens Point.
Nick Zebro of Mosinee broke a 2-2 tie with a goal with 11:50 left in Friday's win.
He also had a goal and two assists in Saturday's win. Ryan Kirchhoff also scored goals in both games, while Adam
Kostichka of Stevens Point had a goal and two assists on Saturday.
Friday's victory was already the Pointers' seventh road victory of the season as
they play their next five games at home following the holiday break. UW-SP is now 6-1-1 over its last eight games.
Women's hockey (8-1-1 overall, 6-0 NCHA): UW-SP had two more shutouts over the weekend as the Pointers enter the holiday break having
not allowed a goal in four straight games and a total of over 265 straight minutes. The Pointers beat UW-Eau Claire
3-0 on Friday and 6-0 on Saturday to remain in first place in the NCHA with a 6-0 league record.
UW-SP is ranked fourth in Division III and got goals from Jackie Schmitt and Tracy
Truckey in each game over the weekend. Jennifer Norris (Roselle, Ill.) scored two goals in Saturday's win and Jackie
Foley had four assists over the weekend. Amy Statz made 19 saves on Friday for her first career shutout.
The Pointers have won six straight games and are off until Jan. 7 when they begin
a four-game stretch on the East Coast against four nationally ranked squads.
Swimming (Men and Women both 3-0 in WIAC
duals): The Pointers are off until
leaving for their annual training trip in Hawaii following Christmas. They will compete in the Aileen Soule Classic
in Honolulu on Jan. 3.
Wrestling (3-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC): UW-SP had a big week with a pair of key WIAC dual meet victories over UW-La Crosse 19-17
and UW-Platteville 28-12.
The Pointers won six of the 10 matches in both duals. The win over UW-La Crosse
was their first since 1999 and snapped the Eagles' 24-match WIAC winning streak, which dated to the last loss to
the Pointers.
David Davila won by major decision at 125 pounds over UW-La Crosse, while Brady
Holtz, Joel Burdick, Ed Wynimko, Cody Koenig and Yan White also posted victories.
Koenig and White both had pins and Davila won by forfeit against UW-Platteville.
Wynimko won by major decision, while Ryan Hansen and Nate Kurszewski of Stevens Point also had wins.
The Pointers are off until Jan. 10 when they host defending national champion Wartburg.
