SETTING IT STRAIGHT: Sara Eckerman and Megan Wesenberg are the two seniors on the Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) girls basketball team this season. Kelly Jablonski was listed in a Dec. 12 Gazette story about the team but she graduated in May.

Among other members of the squad who were omitted from the listing were juniors Jaycie Fritsch and Miranda Sexton and sophomore Jennifer Flury. Sarah Petersen's name was also misspelled.

VALLEY CONFERENCE MAY ADD THREE TEAMS: The Wisconsin Valley Conference will add three teams and become a two-division league under a proposal approved by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Board of Control.

The board approved the plan recently to have Lakeland, Medford and Mosinee join the WVC, forming a 12-school conference with two divisions.

In addition, Menominee Indian would leave the Central Wisconsin Conference and join the Northern Lakes Conference.

WIAA procedures allow a 40-day period to appeal the proposed plans before the board takes final action. Schools and conferences have until Jan. 14, 2004, to appeal the proposal, with the board scheduled to take final action on Jan. 16.

MIRMAN HONORED AS OFFICIAL: Marcy Mirman, a teacher at SPASH, has been identified as eligible to receive a 30-year Officials Award from the WIAA.

DEVINE CERTIFIED AS ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATOR: Mike Devine, athletic director for the Stevens Point Area School District, has been recognized by The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) as a Certified Master Athletic Administrator.

To earn the distinction, Devine had to demonstrate exemplary knowledge, contributions, and on-going professional development in the field of interscholastic athletic administration. The voluntary certification process included an evaluation of his educational background, experience, NIAAA leadership courses and professional contributions. The process culminates with a practical written project.

The NIAAA is a national professional organization consisting of all 50 state athletic administrator associations and more than 5,800 individual members. It is dedicated to promoting the professional growth of high school athletic administrators and preserving the educational nature of interscholastic athletics and the place of these programs in the secondary school curriculum.

KRAUSE CAPTAINS USA AZTEC BOWL TEAM IN LOSS TO MEXICO: UW-SP quarterback Scott Krause was elected team captain and finished with 74 yards of total offense for the United States Division III all-star squad in Saturday's 34-31 loss to the Mexican National Team in Cancun, Mexico.

Krause was five-for-10 passing for 54 yards and also rushed four times for 20 yards. He had a 21-yard quarterback draw on a third-and-19 play in the second quarter. The United States led 31-13 after three quarters before Mexico rallied with 21 fourth-quarter points for its first win in the seven-year history of playing the Division III all-stars.

Krause was the fifth UW-SP player to take part in the game and the first to be selected as a team captain. He was voted captain by his teammates along with quarterback Tyler Matthews of Linfield (Ore.), linebacker Graham Goldwasser of Williams (Mass.) and defensive end Jarrod Smith of Trinity (Texas).

ZEBRO AND FOLEY EARN NCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS: UW-SP landed the men's and women's Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Players of the Week after both teams finished off weekend sweeps of UW-Eau Claire.

Freshman forward Nick Zebro was honored on the men's side, while sophomore defenseman Jackie Foley was selected on the women's side. Zebro was also named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

They were also named Pointer Players of the Week in their sports.
