Plover Black Sox:
The team finished second at the Class AAA State Legion Tournament in Stevens Point, which started Friday, Aug. 1, and lasted until Wednesday, Aug. 6.

Plover lost in the State Championship game, 4-2, to De Pere on Wednesday, Aug. 6. The Black Sox entered the top of the ninth inning trailing, 4-1, but didn't go down quietly. Adam Evanoff led off the inning with a double, which was followed by a Ted Schlafke single that put runners on first and third with no outs. The next batter, Ahern Cashin, hit a sacrifice fly that scored Evanoff, and made the score 4-2. Following the second out of the inning, pinch-hitter Garrett Wroblewski's double moved Schlafke to third, and put the tying run on second base. Plover would fall just short, as Phil Koback flied out to center field to end the game. The Sox got behind early, as De Pere scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Plover starter Derrick Lepak, to take a 3-0 lead. The Sox got on the board in the top of the fifth, as a double by Koback scored Jason Higgins, and made the score, 3-1. De Pere would add another run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead, and Plover was unable to come all the way back. Lepak turned in a solid outing, allowing two earned runs over eight innings of work, scattering 10 hits. Evanoff had two hits to lead the offense.

The Black Sox opened up the tournament with a win, 8-0, over Superior on Friday, Aug. 1. Nate Tuen pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits in the shutout. Offensively, Lepak, Schlafke and Joel Hojnacki had two hits apiece, while Evanoff, Cashin and Mitch Miskoski each had a double.

Plover lost to De Pere, 11-2, on Sunday, Aug. 3. The Sox scored both of their runs in the first inning, on a RBI triple by Evanoff, which was followed by a Schlafke RBI double. Lepak took the loss, giving up seven runs in six-and-one-third innings of work.

On Monday, Aug. 4, the team eliminated the reigning-state champion Appleton Rebels, 10-9, thanks to Schlafke's two-run, walk-off home run. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Plover trailing, 9-8, Schlafke's two-run shot gave the Sox the win and kept them alive in the tournament. Schlafke had a monster day at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, three RBIs and four runs scored. Hojnacki, Lepak, Higgins and Wes Sutton added two hits apiece.

Plover earned a berth in the state championship game, beating Watertown, 17-4 in seven innings, on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Cashin had two hits, including a two-run home run, while Schlafke added a three-run double among his two hits, as the Black Sox cruised. Tuen turned in another solid performance on the mound, allowing three earned runs in seven innings. Hojnacki added a two-run triple among his two hits, while Miskoski, Higgins and Koback all had two hits apiece.

Stevens Point Sixers: The Sixers finished 0-2 in the Class AAA State Legion Tournament at Bukolt Park. Stevens Point opened up against De Pere (which went on to win the state tournament), and dropped a tough, 5-2, decision on Friday, Aug. 1. Ryan Blomlie had both of the Sixers' RBIs on the night, scoring Kyle Lepak on a single in the bottom of the sixth inning, and driving in Randy Printz with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Brandon Ganoni took the loss on the mound.

Stevens Point was eliminated on Saturday, Aug. 2, losing to Superior, 3-1 in 10 innings. Brad Heeg supplied the teams' lone run with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, while Adam Macht added two hits. Lepak was the hard-luck loser, giving up three runs and six hits in nine-and-two-thirds innings of work. The Sixers season ended with a 19-20 record.
