YMCA will host Great Race of Portage County

People who wish they could be on "Survivor," "The Amazing Race" or "Fear Factor" will have an opportunity to try their skills during the first Great Race Of Portage County, Aug. 22 to Aug. 24.

The event will be sponsored by the Stevens Point Area YMCA and will focus on fury, humorous and somewhat unlikely challenges, as well as the traditional biking, rowing and running. Contestants will solve puzzles, bargain and discover facts about Portage County.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, from the YMCA and continues until 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. Teams will have two short rest periods during the event.

Team members must provide a sturdy bicycle, bike helmet and sleeping bag. All other items needed for "survival," including a celebration banquet at the end of the event, will be provided.

No team will be eliminated during the event, but only one team will come in first. Registration fee is $175 per team. Teams must consist of two people, and the limit is 12 teams. Registration deadline is Aug. 15, but early registration is encouraged due to limited space.

For more information, contact Tim Borchardt at the YMCA, 342-2980 or via e-mail at
