WISCONSIN RAPIDS - At the WIAA state cross country meet a handful of teams
go home happy every year, while others think of what might have been. While the Rosholt High School boys cross
country team didn't take home a trophy, team members sure had smiles on their faces when they left the Ridges Golf
Course.
The Hornets, who qualified with a first-place finish at sectionals, finished a
surprising fourth in Division 3 when four of their top five runners ran the best races of their lives. Rosholt
scored 140 points, behind champion Pardeeville (79), Boscobel (89) and Marshfield Columbus (113). Marathon was
fifth, with 160 points.
"We're very, very, very, very happy," Rosholt coach Mike Trzebiatowski
said. "We figured it would have been good to get in the top half (of the 14 teams). There's just a lot of
things that can happen."
Brady Staszak missed a top 10 overall finish by six seconds, taking 13th in 17:02.
In the team standings, the senior was ninth. The rest of Rosholt's first five runners had personal best times -
senior Paul Zdroik was 12th (23rd overall in 17:19), junior Tyler Staszak finished 37th (65th overall in 18:07),
senior Chance Inderdahl was 38th (66th overall in 18:07) and senior Casey Giese took 44th (75th overall in 18:15).
Trzebiatowski said Giese's time was 30 seconds faster than he had run before, and
Inderdahl ran 35 seconds faster than he ever had.
Also running for Rosholt were freshman Luke Vosz, who was 70th (105th overall in
19:04) and junior Gavin Lafave, who took 86th (121st overall in 19:57).
The Hornets improved as the season progressed, Trzebiatowski said.
"We got on a roll at the end of the year. At conference and sectionals, we ran well," he said. "We
beat some teams that will look at this and think, 'How the heck did they beat us.' The kids had fun."
It was the highest finish for Rosholt since 1993, when they also took fourth place
in Division 3.
"It's something to build on for next year," Trzebiatowski said.

Two local girls competed as individuals in the Division 3 girls race - Janice Yenter
of Rosholt and Brittany Dick of Amherst.
Yenter, who is a freshman, cracked the top 20, finishing 20th overall in 16:13.
"As a freshman, you just want to survive. She worked her way up," Trzebiatowski
said. "It's a building block for her. To be a freshman, to toe the line and be there by yourself, when your
teammates are normally there, that's tough."
Dick, a junior, took 31st in 16:28.
