Cross country: The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women tied their highest finish ever at second place as three athletes earned all-conference finishes by placing in the top 14. The Pointers also finished fourth in the men's competition.

Leah Herlache was the top finisher for the Pointers with a fourth-place effort in the women's race with a time of 23:37. Kara Vosters was 10th in 24:05 and Jenna Mitchler was 14th in 24:15 to both earn honorable mention All-WIAC honors.

The men's team had a pair of honorable mention All-WIAC performers as Eric Fischer was eighth in 26:02 and James Levash was 11th in 26:07.
UW-Oshkosh won the men's conference title and UW-La Crosse took the women's crown.

The Pointers will take this weekend off before competing at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday, Nov. 16, in Peoria, Ill.

Football (5-3 overall, 3-2 WIAC): The Pointers fell out of the tie atop the WIAC standings after a 37-13 loss to UW-Stout on Saturday, but they still have a chance to share the conference title with wins in their final two games.

UW-SP hosts UW-Platteville Saturday at 2 p.m. at Goerke Field in the final home game of the year. UW-Platteville is ranked fourth in the nation in passing offense at 333.2 yards per game.

The Pointers scored on their first possession Saturday as Scott Krause hit LaRon Ragsdale for his first career reception on a 22-yard touchdown pass, but the Blue Devils came back to post a 23-13 halftime lead and shutout the Pointers in the second half. Krause found Ross Adamczak for a 10-yard touchdown pass late in the first half for the Pointers' other score.

Krause finished 18-for-27 passing for 234 yards, while also rushing for 41 yards to account for 275 of the team's 298 total yards. UW-Stout rolled up 504 yards of total offense and now sits in a three-way tie for the WIAC lead with UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse.

Men's hockey (1-1 overall, 1-1 NCHA): The 10th-ranked Pointers opened their season with a 4-1 win over UW-Stout before falling to eighth-ranked UW-River Falls, 7-2, on Saturday as the Falcons broke a 2-2 tie with five third-period goals.

Nick Glander scored the first two goals in Friday's win and Zenon Kochan and Nick Molski each added goals as the Pointers built a 4-0 lead after two periods. Ryan Scott totaled 27 saves for the victory.

Adam Kostichka scored in the second period of Saturday's game and Mike Brolsma added a power play goal with two seconds left in the period to tie the game 2-2. However, the Falcons took over in the final period to post the victory.

The Pointers have two more NCHA contests this weekend, traveling to face defending NCHA champion St. Norbert on Friday and Lake Forest on Saturday.

Women's hockey (2-0 overall, 0-0 NCHA): UW-SP passed its first big test of the season with flying colors and now gets set for its second-straight weekend against a Division III tournament participant from last season.

The Pointers, ranked fourth in the Division III preseason poll, took care of ninth-ranked St. Mary's, 3-1 and 7-0, last weekend. The wins extended the Pointers' winning streak to 17-straight games as they've outscored opponents 63-11 over the span.

This weekend's games will be the first-ever at Ice Hawks Arena, located off Badger Avenue on Stevens Point's far east side. Gustavus Adolphus is ranked sixth in the country.

Saturday's game was tied 1-1 in the third period before freshmen Pam Stohr and Tracy Truckey broke the tie with goals in the final period.

Jackie Schmitt scored the fastest hat trick in school history on Sunday with three goals over a span of 7:53 of the first period to stake the Pointers to a 3-0 lead. Stohr and Truckey added goals, along with Liz Goergen and Emily Teachout. Crystal Randall posted a shutout in her first collegiate start.

Soccer (14-0-2 overall, 8-0 WIAC): The Pointers began postseason play at home this week by hosting the WIAC tournament. UW-SP defeated UW-Platteville, 9-0, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Andrea Oswald scored three goals, and Molly Cady and Lori Dunning each scored two goals. Emma-klara Porter and Jenny Bruce had the other goals.

The Pointers was scheduled to play fourth-seeded UW-River Falls in the 11 a.m. Friday semifinal. The winner of that game will face the winner of the 2 p.m. Friday game between second-seeded UW-Eau Claire and third-seeded UW-Oshkosh. The championship game is at 1 p.m. Saturday and winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth to the Division III tournament. UW-SP is 28-1 all-time in the WIAC tournament and has won 10 of the previous 11 tournaments, including five straight.

Swimming (Men and Women both 3-1 in overall duals, 3-0 WIAC): Both the men's and women's teams picked up WIAC dual meet wins over the weekend as the men ran their conference winning streak to 36 straight and the women have now on 23 of their last 24 WIAC duals.

The Pointer men rolled past UW-Eau Claire, 172-70, and UW-Whitewater, 148-74, while the women topped UW-Eau Claire, 142-101, and UW-Whitewater, 133-84. UW-SP won every relay race over the weekend as well.

Berit Fahrner continued her solid start to the season by winning five events, including three against UW-Eau Claire. She won the 500 freestyle in 5:26.39, the 1,000 freestyle in 11:08.48 and the 200 butterfly in 2:21.38 against the Blugolds. She also won the 500 freestyle in 5:30.04 and the 400 individual medley in 4:59.94 against UW-Whitewater.

Jenn Wood won both diving events against UW-Whitewater. Jennie Roskopf won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.26 against UW-Eau Claire and the 200 breaststroke in 2:34.50 against UW-Whitewater. Jean Hughes won the 100 freestyle in 57.02 seconds against UW-Eau Claire and the 200 butterfly in 2:22.91 against UW-Whitewater.

The Pointer men were led by Erik Johnson, who won four events and swam on two winning relays. He won the 100 freestyle in 48.98 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1:49.26 against UW-Eau Claire and the 100 in 49.26 and the 200 in 1:49.50 against UW-Whitewater.

Matt Grunwald also won three events with wins in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.93 and the 500 freestyle in 4:58.10 against UW-Whitewater and the 200 butterfly in 2:01.84 against UW-Eau Claire.

Alex Anderson won the 50 freestyle in 22.38 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.25 against UW-Eau Claire, while also taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.87 against UW-Whitewater. Garth Newport captured the 200 individual medley in 2:05.83 and the 100 backstroke in 57.23 seconds against UW-Eau Claire and claimed the 400 individual medley in 4:35.75 against UW-Whitewater.

The Pointers take this weekend off before swimming at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Volleyball (8-26 overall, 2-6 WIAC): The Pointers' season came to an end Tuesday, as they lost to second-seeded UW-Whitewater on Tuesday in the WIAC tournament. The scores were 30-10, 30-22 and 30-14.

The Pointers finished the regular season with a victory over UW-Platteville in a nonconference match, 28-30, 30-21, 30-27, 30-23. Alyssa Mader had 11 kills and 16 digs for the Pointers, while Nichole Stahovich added 10 kills and 20 digs.

UW-SP also lost to 18th-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) 30-20, 30-15, 30-20 as Mader led the way with seven kills. On Wednesday, the Pointers fell to Lakeland 30-19, 21-30, 30-25, 30-21 as Mindy Rockwood totaled 11 kills and five blocks.

Wrestling: The Pointers open their season with the annual Golden Eagle Open in the Multi-Activity Center all day on Saturday. Wrestlers will compete in two divisions in every weight class as over 20 teams are expected to take part once again.

UW-SP returns wrestlers at eight classes from a squad that finished 5-5 in duals at 12th at last year's Division III championships. Leading the returnees is junior Yan White, who won last year's national title at 197 pounds.
