Pointer notes
Wrestling (3-3 overall, 2-2 WIAC): The
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) sophomore Yan White (Antigo) won four straight matches and posted
a pin in the championship match to capture the NCAA Division III wrestling championship at 197 pounds Saturday,
March 2, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
White pinned Upper Iowa's Cliff Thompson in 4:51 in the championship match to become
the third wrestler in UW-SP history to win a national title. White joins two-time winner Perry Miller, who was
the heavyweight champion in 1997 and 1998, and Bob Berceau, who won at 134 pounds in 1989.
White, who was seeded fourth at the weight class, completed his season with a 24-4
overall record and his finish led the Pointers to a 12th-place team finish, which is their highest since finishing
ninth in 1998.
Women's basketball (26-3 overall, 14-2 WIAC): The
Pointers ousted four-time defending national champion Washington University with a 66-60 victory on the Bears'
homecourt in St. Louis on Saturday, March 2. See story page 16.
Men's hockey (18-9-2 overall, 8-4-2 NCHA): Despite
a strong late-season surge, including a third-place performance at last weekend's NCHA tournament, the Pointers
fell short of a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Women's hockey (26-1 overall, 15-1 NCHA): An
amazing season has come to an end for the UW-SP women's hockey team as the Pointers were not awarded a berth to
the first-ever NCAA Division III championship.
Track and field: Megan Lundahl (Sturgeon
Bay) was UW-SP's lone individual champion, but the Pointer track teams showed their depth with third-place performances
in both the men's and women's competitions at last week's WIAC championships. UW-La Crosse won both titles.
Lundahl had a throw of 52 feet, 4.5 inches to win the weight throw title. Second-place
finishers for the women's team were Jenny Todd (Wisconsin Rapids), who had a jump of 17 feet, 11 inches in the
long jump, Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point), who had a time of 26.54 seconds in the 200 meters, Megan Craig (Mindoro),
who posted a time of 4:45.14 in the 1,500 meters and Becky Lebak (Burlington), who finished the 3,000 meters in
10:17.86. The distance medley relay team was second in 12:12.33.
Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt) was the top men's performer with a throw of 59 feet,
seven inches to finish second in the weight throw. The men had third-place efforts from Aaron Carley in the long
jump at 23 feet, 4.75 inches, Mark LaLonde (Park Falls) in the 5,000 meters at 14:50.57 and Jesse Bauman (Verona)
in the 800 meters at 1:55.61.
The team next competes Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, at the NCAA Indoor Championships
(at Ada, Ohio)
