Pointer basketball teams continue dominant play
Men's basketball (10-2 overall, 1-2 WIAC): The University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point won its third-straight game with a 90-58 win over St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday, Dec. 29, in the Sentry
Classic in Stevens Point. The Pointers shot 58 percent from the field and connected on 11 three-pointers for their
20th consecutive non-conference victory. UW-SP is now 27-4 all-time in the Sentry Classic.
Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) had 23 points to lead the Pointers. Nick Bennett (Stevens Point) added 11 points as 13
different players scored for the Pointers.
UW-SP, which is ranked 14th in the nation, was scheduled to play at UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
The Pointers host UW-Platteville Saturday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Quandt Fieldhouse in a rematch of last year's
WIAC quarterfinals that the Pioneers won on a buzzer-beater.
Women's basketball (11-1 overall, 2-1 WIAC): The
Pointers swept a pair of games in Texas last week to improve to 11-1 overall and they now prepare for UW-Eau Claire
in a matchup of ranked teams this week.
UW-SP trounced Schreiner, 97-35, on Friday, Dec. 28, and then beat Texas Lutheran, 71-58, on Saturday, Dec. 29,
to run its road winning streak to 12 straight games. Kari Groshek (Rosholt) had 16 points against Schreiner and
23 points against Texas Lutheran to lead the Pointers. Junior Megan Hodgson (Ridgeway) tied a career high with
13 points in the win over Schreiner.
The Pointers host UW-Eau Claire at Berg Gym Thursday, Jan. 3, in a conference game at 7 p.m. UW-SP was ranked 14th
in the latest national poll, while the Blugolds are ranked 17th in the country.
UW-SP also plays at UW-Platteville on Saturday, Jan. 5, in a rematch of last year's WIAC semifinals, which the
Pioneers claimed on a last-second shot.
Men's hockey (7-6 overall, 3-3 NCHA): UW-SP
returns to action this weekend with a pair of games against two of the top teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference. The team plays at St. Mary's, which is 6-2-1 overall and undefeated in the conference, at
7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, and at St. Thomas, which has a 9-2 record and is ranked sixth in the nation, at 7 p.m.
on Saturday, Jan. 5.
The Pointers won their final two games before the holiday break and are 2-2 against the MIAC this season.
Women's hockey (11-1 overall, 5-1 NCHA): The
Pointers are back on the ice from the holiday break on Sunday, Jan. 6, when they host St. Benedict in a nonconference
game at 6:05 p.m. in Wisconsin Rapids. The game was a recent addition and is not listed on most schedules.
UW-SP is ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division III rankings after opening its season with 11 straight victories.
Swimming and diving (both 3-0 in WIAC duals): UW-SP
is currently in the midst of its annual training trip to Hawaii and was scheduled to take part in the University
of Hawaii Rainbow Classic on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Wrestling (0-2 overall, 0-2 WIAC): Another
tough test lies ahead for the Pointers, who will take on their third nationally ranked team in as many matches
when they host second-ranked Wartburg at 7:30 p.m. at Berg Gym on Friday, Jan. 4.
UW-SP, which is ranked 23rd in the nation, already suffered dual losses to 17th-ranked UW-Platteville and third-ranked
UW-La Crosse. |
