Men's basketball (14-4 overall, 5-4 WIAC):
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) split a pair of games last week, winning at UW-Superior 72-70
and losing at home to UW-Stout, 95-87. The Pointers were scheduled to battle first place UW-Whitewater Wednesday,
Jan. 23, in Whitewater. The Pointers went into the game 5-4 in the league, while UW-Whitewater went in at 7-2.
UW-Oshkosh is 6-3 and UW-La Crosse is 5-3.
Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) led the Pointers with 23 points at UW-Superior, including
a jumper with 35 seconds left that broke a 70-70 tie. Justin Mallett (Kosciusko, Miss.) blocked a shot on the final
play of the game and Nick Bennett (Stevens Point) added 20 points in his first collegiate start.
Iserloth had 30 points Saturday, but the Pointers could not overcome a 63-point
UW-Stout second half in their third straight loss to the Blue Devils. UW-Stout shot 38 free throws in the second
half of a game that had 60 fouls called.
The game marked only the second time in the past six years that the Pointers gave
up 90 points in a game with the other being a 95-89 overtime loss last year at UW-Stout.
Women's basketball (16-2 overall, 7-2 WIAC): The
Pointers rolled to an easy 79-41 victory over UW-Superior last week, but then lost their second game of the year
- both to UW-Stout - with an 82-64 loss on Saturday.
The Pointers fell into a three-way tie for second place with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau
Claire with 7-2 records. UW-Stout leads the league with an 8-1 mark.
In Wednesday's victory, Kari Groshek (Rosholt) scored 15 points to lead a balanced
Pointer attack that featured 12 different players scoring. UW-SP outscored the Yellowjackets 41-18 in the second
half.
On Saturday, the Pointers trailed 40-36 at the half, but the Blue Devils opened
the second half with a 9-2 run and held the Pointers to two field goals over the first 8:38 of the half. Amanda
Nechuta (Mosinee) scored 22 points and Groshek added 12 points for UW-Stevens Point.
The Pointers were scheduled to host UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
Men's hockey (11-8 overall, 4-4 NCHA): UW-SP
picked up a split in an NCHA series with UW-Eau Claire last weekend, falling, 3-2, on Friday in Eau Claire and
winning, 4-2, Saturday at Willett Arena.
Ryan Scott (Plover) made 29 saves in goal in Saturday's win as the Pointers built
a 4-0 lead and went on to the win. Freshman Mike Brolsma (Appleton) scored his first career hat trick and David
Lee (Stevens Point) also scored to lead the Pointers.
In Friday's game, Ryan Kirchhoff (Fairway, Kan.) scored 21 seconds into the game
and Rob Goral (Nashotah) also scored for the Pointers. Kirchhoff had an assist on Saturday to extend his point-scoring
streak to eight straight games.
The Pointers face two more NCHA opponents this weekend, hosting UW-River Falls
on Friday, Jan. 25, and UW-Stout Saturday, Jan. 26. Both games are at 7:30 p.m. at Willet Arena. UW-SP is in fifth
place in the NCHA - one point behind fourth-place UW-Eau Claire and two points behind third-place UW-River Falls.
Women's hockey (17-1 overall, 9-1 NCHA): Defense
was again the key for the Pointers as UW-SP recorded two more shutouts to run its winning streak to six straight
games by beating Lake Forest, 2-0, and, 4-0, last weekend.
The fifth-ranked Pointers have posted shutouts in four of their last five games
and sophomore Diane Sawyer (Stillwater, Minn.) had her third straight shutout on Saturday to extend her scoreless
streak to 195 minutes. Freshman Shannon Kasparek (South Lyon, Mich.) had 13 saves on Friday for her second shutout
of the season.
Ashley Howe (Lakeville, Minn.) scored the first goal on Friday. On Saturday she
scored the team's first shorthanded goal since the first period of the inaugural game of last season. UW-SP outshot
Lake Forest, 50-8, in Saturday's game, marking the fewest shots the Pointers have ever allowed in a game.
This Saturday, the Pointers host St. Mary's in a nonconference game at 5:05 p.m.
on Saturday, Jan. 26, as part of a doubleheader with the Pointer men's team. St. Mary's is in second place in the
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 11-2-1 record.
Swimming and diving (both 4-0 in WIAC duals): UW-SP
is coming off a dual meet sweep of UW-River Falls as the men's and women's teams both improved to 4-0 in WIAC duals.
The victory was the 32nd consecutive WIAC win for the Pointer men's team. No official team scores or individual
results were available.
The Pointers will host the annual "Get to the Point Invite" Friday and
Saturday, Jan. 25-26, with prelims beginning both days at 9 a.m. Finals are at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 3:30 p.m.
on Saturday.
Wrestling (2-3 overall, 1-2 WIAC): The
Pointers picked up their first dual meet win of the season with a 31-6 victory over UW-Oshkosh. UW-SP, which is
ranked 26th in the NCAA Division III rankings, defeated 28th-ranked Lawrence, 27-9, on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The Pointers
next face WIAC rival UW-Whitewater on Thursday, Jan. 24. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m and is the Pointers'
final home match of the season.
Against UW-Oshkosh, the Pointers received a pin at 165 pounds from freshman Cody
Koenig (Underwood, Iowa), who improved to 12-4 overall for the season. Sophomore Yan White (Antigo) is ranked fourth
in the country at 197 pounds and posted a technical fall. Senior Nathan Preslaski (Pulaski) also returned from
an injury to win 13-2 at 157 pounds.
