Men's basketball (15-4 overall, 6-4 WIAC): The Pointers picked up a big win last week at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and are now part of a seven-team race for the WIAC title. UW-Stevens Point is one of four teams in the league with four losses, while three other teams have five losses.

The Pointers were scheduled to play another of the four-loss teams on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at UW-La Crosse. On Saturday, Feb. 2, UW-SP takes on five-loss UW-Platteville.

Junior Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) tied his single-game school scoring record with 40 points in last week's 91-80 overtime win over UW-Whitewater. Iserloth also scored 40 points in a win over UW-River Falls on Jan. 9. Neal Krajnik (Manitowoc) and Kalonji Kadima (Milwaukee) each added 12 points.

UW-SP, which is ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III, is now 3-0 in overtime games this season.

Women's basketball (17-2 overall, 8-2 WIAC): Senior Kari Groshek (Rosholt) set the UW-SP women's single-game scoring record with 38 points in last week's 83-50 win over UW-Whitewater as the Pointers remained among three teams with two losses in the WIAC. UW-Stout leads the conference with a 10-1 record.

Groshek had 21 points during the first half and also added 11 rebounds and five steals in her record-setting performance. She also tied a school record by making 16 field goals in her 20 attempts.

This week, the 13th-ranked Pointers have two more home games. They were scheduled to host UW-La Crosse on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and play UW-Platteville at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Berg Gym. The Pointers beat UW-La Crosse in last year's WIAC quarterfinals and lost to UW-Platteville in the semifinals last season.

Men's hockey (13-8 overall, 6-4 NCHA): It was a huge weekend for the Pointers as they climbed back into the NCHA race by beating UW-River Falls, 4-2, on Friday, Jan. 25, and UW-Stout, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday, Jan. 26.

UW-SP is now alone in third place with 12 points, while UW-Eau Claire is fourth with 11 points and UW-River Falls is fifth with 10 points. UW-Superior is second with 14 points and St. Norbert leads the way with 19 points.

Senior Bob Gould (Eagle River) had a solid weekend in goal with 31 saves against UW-River Falls and 26 stops against UW-Stout to earn NCHA Player of the Week honors.

Zenon Kochan (Madison) scored two goals and Nick Glander (Brookfield) broke a 2-2 tie on a goal with six minutes left to lead the Pointers past seventh-ranked UW-River Falls. The win marked the 200th career win for Pointers' coach Joe Baldarotta. He is the fourth coach ever to win 200 games as a member of the NCHA.

Ryan Feil (Orland Park, Ill.) scored two goals on Saturday night, including the game-winner 46 seconds into overtime as the Pointers beat UW-Stout in overtime for the second time this season.

UW-SP plays at Lake Forest on Friday, Feb. 1, and then travels to face first place St. Norbert on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Women's hockey (18-1 overall, 9-1 NCHA): The shutout streak reached four straight games as the Pointers blanked another opponent with a 3-0 win over St. Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 26. UW-SP has now shut out five of its last six opponents and hasn't allowed a goal over the past 252 minutes.

Freshman goalie Shannon Kasparek (South Lyon, Mich.) stopped 20 shots for her second straight shutout and third of the season. It was UW-SP's seventh-straight win and the Pointers finished the season 9-0 against non-conference opponents.

The Pointers were being shutout themselves until late in the second period when Emily Teachout (Edina, Minn.) finally broke the deadlock. Ann Ninnemann (Rosemount, Minn.) added two third-period goals, including a shorthanded goal.

UW-SP, ranked fourth in the nation, will host 10th ranked UW-River Falls this weekend in an NCHA series. The games will be Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Willett Arena. They are the Pointers' final home games of the season.

Swimming and diving (both 4-0 in WIAC duals): The UW-SP women's team had no individual champions, but still finished second among 12 teams at last weekend's Get to the Point Invite, while the men's team was third among 10 teams.

Erik Johnson (Albert Lea, Minn.) led the men's team by winning the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 47.86 and the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:43.51. Johnson was a part of all five Pointer victories, swimming on the winning 200-, 400- and 800-meter freestyle relays.

Aaron Marshall (Cambridge, Minn.) was also on all three winning relays and finished second in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 22.14 seconds, which was one-hundredth of a second behind first place. Anthony Harris was on two winning relays and finished second in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 53.37 seconds, which was two-hundredths of a second short of first.

Christine Sammons (Hastings, Minn.) finished second in the 100-meter breaststroke at 1:07.39 and second in the 200-meter breaststroke at 2:26.10 to lead the women's team. She was also on the second-place 400-meter medley relay. Alissa Bartz (Beloit) was second and Lindsay Correll (Aurora, Ill.) was third in the 100-meter backstroke.

UW-La Crosse won the women's title, while South Dakota took the men's title. UW-La Crosse will visit Stevens Point on Friday, Feb. 1, for a men's and women's dual meet at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 2, the teams travel to UW-Green Bay for a 3 p.m. meet.

Track and field: The women's team captured the team title at the 12-team UW-Whitewater Invitational, while the men's team was second among 13 teams at the season-opening meet.

Megan Craig (Mindoro) won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:50.80 and Becky Lebak claimed the 5,000-meters with a time of 17:32.72 to lead the women's team. Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point) captured the triple jump title with a leap of 11.18 meters.

Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt) was the lone men's champion, winning the weight throw by nearly two meters with an NCAA automatic qualifying heave of 17.97 meters.

UW-SP will host the annual Eastbay Invitational this weekend. The Decathlon and Heptathlon events will be conducted Friday, Feb 1, at 3 p.m. and the rest of the meet starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb 2.

Wrestling (3-3 overall, 2-2 WIAC): The Pointers had two big wins last week by toppling Lawrence, 27-9, and then rolling past UW-Whitewater, 30-3. UW-SP, which is ranked 25th in Division III, was scheduled to compete at UW-Parkside, which is ranked 11th in Division II on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

UW-SP had six wrestlers win both of their matches last week. Heavyweight Mark Burger (Merrill) posted takedowns in the final minute of both of his matches for victories, while David Davila (Chicago, Ill.) had a pin and an overtime victory at 125 pounds.

Justin Geitner (Kaukauna) won, 23-7, and, 14-6, for technical fall and major decision wins at 149 pounds. Yan White (Antigo) at 197 pounds and Cody Koenig (Underwood, Iowa) at 165 pounds each had major decision wins, while Nathan Preslaski (Pulaski) also won twice.

UW-SP also will compete at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2.
