SPASH gymnasts win conference meet
The Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) gymnastics team won the
Wisconsin Valley Conference Meet on Saturday, Feb. 16. The team also broke the conference team record with a score
of 142.925.
The Panthers also beat the conference balance beam team record with 36.45.
Wisconsin Rapids took second with 138.225 and D.C. Everest finished third with 133.975.
"The team handled any pressure they felt with confidence. This meet helped give us the assurance we need going
into sectionals," said SPASH coach Mary Olszewski.
Kim Klosno finished second in the all around for the Panthers with 35.675 points. Teammate Raenee Bugarske finished
fourth (35.325).
On the bars Kaity Munsey and Bugarske both scored 8.675, finishing fifth and sixth. Klosno finished close behind,
in seventh. Stefanie Neiderman took 11th.
Carrie Williamson was the top Panther finisher in the vault, finishing sixth with an 8.8. Baugarske finished seventh,
Klosno took eighth, Munsey ninth and Nikki Cruz 10th.
Klosno took third (9.4) on the floor exercise, Cruz was fourth (9.25), Anne Simonis finished sixth and Bugarske
took ninth.
"The parents cheering from the stands gave us a boost of energy when we began the floor exercise. The excitement
grew from that and we had powerful floor routines and some of the cleanest routines of the season on the beam,"
Olszewski said.
The team took five of the top-seven places on the beam. Cruz was the top Panther competitor, finishing third with
a 9.25. Simonis took fourth (9.125), Jenna Weinbauer finished fifth (9.075), Klosno took sixth and Bugarske took
seventh. |
